Assassin's Creed Unity will run at 900p/30fps on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Ubisoft has confirmed, with the publisher opting to aim for platform parity to avoid discussion over the differences in performance.

"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," senior producer Vincent Pontbriand told VideoGamer.com while explaining that it's the consoles' CPUs – not the GPU – that prevents Ubisoft Montreal from improving the game's performance.

"Technically we're CPU-bound," he said. "The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel.

"We were quickly bottlenecked by that and it was a bit frustrating, because we thought that this was going to be a tenfold improvement over everything AI-wise, and we realised it was going to be pretty hard. It's not the number of polygons that affect the framerate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we're still limited to 30 frames per second."

Last year's Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag also shipped at 900p/30fps on both PS4 and Xbox One. A post-release patch, however, bumped the PS4 version to 1080p. Ubisoft has given no indication that it has plans to do the same for Unity.

Assassin's Creed Unity launches on PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 14.

The amount of stupidity in this decision is amazing. Ubisoft's focus should be making the best game possible, parity or not. So if the Xbone didn't exist, would the game be 1080p/60fps? This is insane.

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

I don’t think that would be fair to fans, to sell the same game but with different levels of experience.

 

Yeah shame we won;t have more Wii U games with these wonderful moments.

If they can down port from pc to ps4 and from ps4 to x1 for "parity" they could run on wii u.

Gold, keep digging yourself a hole Ubi.

The funny thing is, this was meant to stop debates, which were very mild in the first place (M$ pay out to Ubi?), yet it brought up a bigger debate than not having parity. Honesty if the devs really tried, they probably could have it running on PC, PS4, Xbone, and Wii U at 1080p, maybe 30fps instead of 60fps. But this Ubi, good textures, poor optimization.

Come to think of it, Bayonetta 2 has parity on both PS4 and Xbone.

But I bet if it was on the WiiU then it would be like 500p or something and the PS4 and Xbox One versions would still be 900p.

It's not just Ubisoft that Microsoft have forced parity.

Alien: Isolation is an example of a game already out that could manage 60fps on PS4 but dumbed down to 30fps to make Xbone look not so bad.

I belong to an FB XBone group b/c I took the plunge and got a Madden XBone bundle.... It was funny to hear these people talk about how they didn't really care about the graphics so much. But they will turn around and diss on the Wii U for not having enough power.
