There is a small movement of people that think plot twists are evil. I can almost agree - if a plot twist isn't done well in a game, it can be worse than no plot twist at all.

For this reason, my vote of "best storyline ever" goes to Zelda: Majora's Mask. It tells a simple story with little to no plot twists yet is somehow pretty creepy. There is almost never any clarity problems in the story.

I couldn't pick a game, so I picked the WHOLE franchise.

There is no single best story in gaming. However maybe the best ones in general come from RPG's,Interactive Novel games and Point and Click games often have the best stories. Thing is 10's of thousands of games and most people never heard of. It's easy to pick something popular  or even something a bit less known but a cult following like Xenogears.(personally think it's sotry is dumb)

You seem to think lots of games have good stories. I, on the other hand, am of the opinion that almost all games have bad stories - they lack as a form of entertainment over books and movies in the category of storylines. Even most RPGs have bad stories because they were written and rewritten most often by 5-10 writers instead of one, losing their coherency and focus.

A lot and most are two different things. Maybe most games do have a bad story or quickly thrown together but a lot is not most. So yeah like I said thousands and thousands of games have been made. There is a lot with great characters and story. I did not say most however. Also a lot is broad term. Can mean a hundred or a thousand.

I thought KH 358/2 Days was amazing at the time. Also, FE:A. Only game to almost make me cry.

Grim Fandango. Maybe Space Quest II. And No more heroes has a very good story that fits well with the game.

I would say, Heavy Rain, I found it very original in terms of games and I'm still waiting for more similar storylines. But there's really a ton of great stories, like Silent Hill 2 which was something else when it came out. Another game that I found its story great was Binary Domain.

Still I feel the games that I love their worlds/story tend to be simple ones(stories that might've even been told a billion times) but are told very well and presented very well. For instance, The Last of Us, Mass Effect(series), Resident Evil(1&2), Zelda OOT, GTAV, are all video games with simple stories but they told them with great precision and ended up doing great things.
