Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was a messy game, and it's taken far too long to patch it. After weeks of waiting though European fans have finally gotten a fix of sorts (it's not out yet in the US), but the problem is Sega hasn't disclosed what's actually in it. Thankfully, fans have gotten to the bottom of it through a crowdsourcing effort of sorts.

Most notably, the Knuckles infinite jump has been fixed, and invisible barriers have been put up to prevent extra glitches. There's also an improved framerate, a better navigation system, and lighting and shadow improvements.

It's nice that the patch exists, but it's a huge shame that it took this long. Big Red Button doesn't have the same resources that some AAA studios do, but the lack of communication on this entire issue is debatably a bigger problem

boom-patch.jpg

Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric has been patched in the EU, it’s over 1GB in size and contains a number of fixes. The patch is not live in the US and neither Sega or Big Red Button have released patch notes. Well that’s not going to stop us from trying to figure out what the patch does.

Based on reports from many sites around the world, here are a list of reported changes caused by the new patch. So if you haven’t yet installed the patch, you can decide now if you want to update or not, why do I say that? Well the patch changes one of the most notorious aspects of the game which some may not like.

So without further ado, here are a list of all the changes noticed so far.

Size: 1GB (1080MB)

Bug Fixes:

Knuckles Infinite Jump fixed

Some level barriers added to prevent the player from escaping the map. The most notorious example…

boomglitch.gif

This is reported to no longer work, an invisible barrier prevents the player from escaping.

Additions:

Navigation arrows “Small yellow arrows added which show you where to go” (They were in the original, but they now have some issues).

Improvements:

Improved Framerate during speed sections

Loops are ‘less choppy’

Minor lighting improvements

Improved shadows.

Problems with the Patch:

The Navigation arrows can’t be turned off(?) Correction, they can be turned off using the analogue sticks.

The navigation arrows tell you where to go, but you can still miss vital items which you need for when you get to the location. So you can follow the arrows and still become stuck not knowing what to do.

That’s all the notes for now, if Sega release some official ones or if new changes are discovered we’ll let you know.

No patch can fix a game this unfinished unless they just remake it. Please just accept it's fate and let it die.

Ok I would like them to swap arm colors with some characters just to make Chris Chan angry and that other dude who says morans and other words not allowed to say

Damn, 1GB! That's huge. /sarcasm

This is 2015, 1GB isn't massive. Calling that massive just really put me off.

Anyway, it's good that they're at least trying to fix this game. I heard quite a bit of the team that worked on the game quit during development so it's no wonder it took a while for this patch but better late than never.

As a Sonic fan, this would be a Wii U game I would want to own and play even if it doesn't seem that great I'd still like to play it at some point.

On a Nintendo console, a game that receives a 1 gig patch is massive lol.  I'm sure many are use to the small 7 - 40 gig patches from Ubisoft. hehe.

You can thank destructiod for the "massive" terminology .

Yeah I noticed that it wasn't you calling it massive and I suppose for Nintendo consoles that could be on the massive side. I'm just used to PC where a 1GB patch isn't very big at all, sure most patches are smaller but a 1GB one wouldn't surprise me.

Now they just need to patch Sonic 2006, Shadow the hedgehog game, etc.

I haven't played Sonic '06 but from what I've seen the multitude of glitches isn't its only problem, its game design itself seems poorly done. It being released like that suggests it was a lack of budget or just poor planning, what the real case is I'm not sure.

I have heard the game design of this game, Sonic Boom, isn't great either but they did have issues with development since most of their team quit.

Yeah I kinda agree with more of a remake needed then a patch, but a patch is nice too. If a patch can add more interactivity npcs in the world, then I might pick this up when it gets cheaper.

See if i get some time this evening to check out the patch. I am actually curious to see how much "improvement" there is regarding frame rate especially in the speed sections.

Not sure where you've been hiding, on a Nintendo console a 100mb patch is on the normal high side.

I don't have a Wii U so I wouldn't know. I haven't used my 3DS in a while either.

Does the Wii U use 'blocks' like the 3DS?

Well the game was bad as it is, I wouldn't call patching a game a disgrace.

Probably to finish developing the game while you play it.

Sega has brought their games to mobile (which I got for free from Amazon) and their best work is this.

Nintendo refuses to bring their work to other platforms and their games are awesome.

Coincidence? I think not.

Sonic Bloom

Wow, the shadows and lighting are night and day. Good improvement. I saw another video showing improved performance in speed sections, it is not as jumpy. Frame rate is improved.

Funny though, the video description says this cut scene was the only one improved.. so the other cut scenes were not? hehe. Still doesn't take away from the hardly mediocre story, game play and combat mechanics.
