this game success could also be the fact that all characters in the game are not clones of each others like in most fighting games and it can have one of the largest rosters ever (100 fighters to start) and many dlc packs to add later.
amiibo add a twist in the game by allowing players certain moves and abilities for example lucario amiibo can give lucario the ability to go mega just like in the trailer.

I feel like you don't have much experience with fighting games man...
In a fighter you never want fighters to only be available during trade. It's pretty much strictly unlock. And you can often get away wth DLC. In pokemon games there are like hundreds of those things running around, so they're nothing special, but fighters don't work that way because (point 2) the rosters aren't that big. You don't want them that big. When you have 100 characters it just becomes ridiculous. You can't find a an and it's impossible to know how to counter 99 other characters. In a traditional fighter like this you choose one or two characters as your main to start usually, and many people form somewhat of a bond with those characters. This is why fighters often have small diverse casts with very different personalities. People like to play characters they feel connected to. if you have 100 members that diversity starts to drop off. You'll also notice this means that it's very rare for clones to make up the majority of the cast. Street Fighter is probably the fighter with the most "clones" and even that game doesn't have too many.

During today’s Pokken Tournament live stream, producer Katsuhiro Harada unveiled the controller that will be used for the arcade system. Here’s what we learned:
– Pokken Tournament isn’t going to be as difficult to get into compared to other fighting games
– Namco is developing it with both veteran players and newcomers to the genre in mind
– This controller was chosen to make it easier for beginners to get into since arcade sticks can be a little difficult or intimidating for those who’ve yet to play a fighting game
– The controller has a red part that lights up below
– Trigger buttons, traditional d-pad, four face buttons also included
– Said to resemble the look of the Famicom controller

Am I the only one who thought this was about a Polk Music Showdown? People with lederhosen, traditional dresses, and funny hats fighting each other with souped up accordians and such?

that wii u board.. if you know what i mean... hehe.
It's also worth noting that Namco and Nintendo have a long and lucrative relationship. Namco helped considerably with the development of Super Smash Brothers for 3DS and Wii U, but before that, Nintendo, Namco and Sega partnered up to create the Triforce arcade system board. For those unfamiliar with the arcade hardware, it's what powered the arcade version of F-Zero GX (known as F-Zero AX), as well as the Mario Kart arcade title.

Erm this isn't Triforce. That was a LONG time ago. Yes they once worked together on Triforce and had games but this is far beyond Triforce lol. That was like 2002. It was a beefy Gamecube. GD-Rom is what Dreamcast used. 1.2GB discs. Slightly smalelr storage than GCN's 1.5.
