Sonic went downhill when Shadow was introduced... the good and the bad

Shadow is also more powerful than Sonic in many scenarios. In Sonic 2006 for example, Mephiles kills Sonic. While Shadow, who has power inhibitors and can shoot fireballs ingame, beats him down.
But it doesn't end here. Shadow is a cool character yet still ruins the Sonic games. Now what happens when you add someone lame like Silver? It's even worse.
Fixing the things I mentioned, will only fix half the broken games/storylines though

You're kind of nuts if you think Shadow is what introduced dark elements into the Sonic series. Ever play Sonic CD, Spinball, or SA1?
Shadow was introduced as an evil Sonic for Sonic to fight in SA2. Fans liked him, so SEGA BSed a way to bring him back and cash in on the character with his title game.
Getting rid of Shadow would likely remove some of the actual decent things from Sonic, as his interactions with Shadow are great (how Sonic always kicks his ass and messes around, showing how pitiful it really is for Shadow to continue pretending to be edgy).
Sonic 06 wasn't a bad game because of it's story, it was a bad game because it sucked as a game and was rushed out a product to cash in on with no effort. Silver doesn't really suck as a character in any other games or even in the comics.
The reason for Sonic games failing is because SEGA didn't know how to make the games good without trying to appeal to every fan out there (or specific fans). Unleashed tried to cater to the God of War mechanics, Shadow tried the gritty re-imagining genre, Sonic 06 was a rushed project nowhere near completion, Boom was a third party project that had a bunch of pitfalls and team problems, Heroes tried to cash in on the Sonic Adventure model without trying to improve upon it, and Genesis was a cash grab with no effort in the port job.
It had to do with SEGA's marketing schemes, it's why there were so many bad games at once, but it seems like they learned since then. Sonic 4 was decent (only whiny purists hate it), Unleashed was fantastic (people only gripe about the werehog), Generations was great, Colors was great (it played it too safe), and Lost World was pretty good (SEGA actually tried to make something new, it was a fun and imaginative game). Sonic fans are the worst fans out there and demand specific games and crap on others (all the BS 2d vs 3d arguments), hell, half of them don't even know what they're saying when they whine about Eggman's name (his name was Eggman in the original japanese edition on the first game, Robotnik was given to the English games to fit the cartoon canon).

Seeing as that arguing with anyone won't go anywhere, I'll just join in this:

IMO Sonic when downhill when Sega paid a psychologist to "help" with advertising instead of trying novel and fun new things with Sonic.

To me, all the 'bad' sonic games are just people realizing holding right and watching loop de loops with the occasional jump or roll just wasnt really that engaging.
Well, except 06. Thats just, wow.

I both agree and disagree at the same time. The thing is, I liked Shadow the way he way portrayed in SA2 (except the whole Maria which I'll get into in just a bit) with him cocky and calculating. Once he was brought back from the dead though, his existence became entirely pointless. All he does stand in a corner and cross his arms in a lame attempt to look edgy. With that said, Sonic went downhill, imo, with SA2. Not only because of it's trend of being "edgy and cool", but the mostly boring level designs and being forced to play as other characters.

Aw look I thought Adventure 2 was a quality game, the best Sonic game I've ever played and I also really enjoyed Shadow's game as well. I think it's a little unfair to cast the blame on him, actually he's probably one of the good things about the franchise these days.

I'm no expert on Sonic but all I know is I haven't really enjoyed a sonic game since Sonic 3 and Knuckles which was amazing. Also Dr. Robotnik is a WAY better name than Dr. Eggman.

Ive always been of the rather unpopular opinion that sonic never was that great.

Yeah, I mean, back in the day, it was slightly more impressive since there was less to play, but the gameplay is kinda really bad. You're supposed to run really fast, but then they put stuff where you die if you do, so you're doing this stop start thing, and it gets old. I'm no huge mario fan, but I do prefer it.
