Now we all talk about the hardcore gamer but does anybody have a difinative answer? Who are these people nintendo are trying to win back? Heres who i think they are. Surely aa hardcore gamer is somebody with a power house p.c whos constantly updating there pc to be the very best and what ever free time they have they play online annd are usually the best at whatever game they play! U cant get any more hardcore than that! ps3 and xbox users who play cod all day, arnt exactly that hardcore really are they, just a bit narrow minded? Am i wrong thinking this?

A hardcore gamer is one who spends a lot of time on his/her games. Some of them could be considered completionists.

Actually there is 2 categories of hardcore gamers..

Console gamers, who are the ones you just wrote, and pc gamers, who are more advanced and demanding in all aspects, hardware and software. Pc gamers learn faster, adopt new technologies and most of the times, can change things in their gaming or programming experience. Also many times, game companies adopt this ideas and innovation, from them.

Console gamers dont care about the hardware, they buy whatever you sell them, and thats how fanboism is born, they stick with 1 or 2 type of techs, till the major company decides to innovate in something better.... Pc gamers are hard to catch, they are smarter and much much more demanding. The horror of any developer out there. Its a threat for them, if they see pc games sell more than console games. Pc gamers can easily become fanboys but in specific hardware parts/brands, but the overall result and at the end of the day, all pc gamers have 1 common thing...

Yeah that. Sadly, a better explanation of the term nowadays would be "kids who think they are cool because they play bloody games on expensive consoles."
No sig.

*
POPULAR

Someone who plays video games as a primary hobby. They tend to spend large amounts of time playing games, often in excess of two or three hours a day.

Hardcore gamers tend to care less about graphics then casual gamers. While some specialize in a single genre, they typically have fairly diverse taste in games, frequently playing a wide variety of games from different genres. They'll often seek out obscure and older games, based on word of mouth or positive critical reception. Hardcore gamers put good gameplay above all else, and don't mind if a good game has poor (or even nonexistent) graphics, sound, characters and plot.

Most of the people i know who nintendo are trying to win back are still playing saints row 1 and cod black ops zombies! The 3ds could handle those games, im beggining to think simplicity with a more adult theme is the way forward.

There is plenty of theories for what is called "hard core gamer" and there is many categories,

An example is Nexus network that if you speak about ANY console in there, u probably get banned. So every theory and explanation is true false...

The only certain thing is, hardcore gamers are not fanboys, they are tech wiz as they spend their life time with machines, and play all kind of games indeed.

I was raised with the fact that hardcore gamer meant someone who pledged allegiance to a certain gameplay type and then whine constantly when that gameplay is remotely altered.

There's a lot of definitions, I'm sure, but this is the one I'm most familiar with. To be honest, I don't get the term "hardcore". It's so vague.

That's fanboyism.

To many, hardcore gamers are the ones that mommy lets play the games with the guns, splosions and blood. Of course, the exact opposite is true.

Its not.. Seeing my personal desires and needs in video games, it comes in a HUGE conflict with gamers who dont care about tech innovation.. upgrade.. I mean, I totally understand why extreme gamers dont accept consoles.. And this is developers fault..

They stop creating quality games because consoles gamers are the easy catch and money.. u give them make over of old good platforms or whatever, that does not need huge effort to built.. and u get the bucks.. Complexity is gone.. The game industry is a bit static with consoles. As I said earlier, pc gamers are upgrading quarterly or yearly.. not every 8 years.. Its logical to need better and better and better games. Its not their fault either. Today games are just 1-2 days three maximum of gameplay... then caput.. DLC and money leech.. Pure textures and engines to be compatible with a past due hardware, etc.. I hope u understand my point.

I will give u a very small example with 2 videos .. we will see that in a game, in about 5-10 years, because of consoles... 1and 2 So basically we buy tech that is wasted...

I like this a bit... probably because I feel like it allows for multiple definitions of greatness in a game. But 'graphics' is another one of those vague terms - 8-bit-style pixel art can be beautiful or ugly just like any other art style, and I prefer to play beautiful games (even old ones, or text-based adventures with clever and engaging narration) rather than ugly ones... so I don't entirely agree with the "gameplay above all" mantra as it is here defined... I think all of those "unimportant" things have to factor into a holistic idea of "gameplay"...

As far as "hardcore" goes... I think Nintendo, when it says that it wants back hardcore gamers, pretty much only means that they would like to have some customers that actually buy games. They're a business... *shocker!*... and they need to have a platform that encourages developers to produce games by offering the reasonable expecation of profit. Millions of households own a Wii + exactly one game (WiiSports)... millions more own a Wii + a few shovelware games that they thought would be fun at parties. This really does not encourage developers to make games for a platform.

Perhaps we personally find "bloody" games distasteful, or believe that CoD offers a very simple and uniteresting gameplay experience. Perhaps we have some sort of Freudian complex surrounding impressive visual prowess and would rather not allow the people who enjoy such games to be elevated by the title "hardcore" - which suggests a certain prestige or prowess or dignity or good taste or whatever... but I think that ultimately none of that matters to Nintendo when it says it wants the hardcore gamer back. I really think that all they're saying is "please, people that buy games, come back and buy those games on our platform, so that we can continue to sell consoles and thereby have the income to continue making the games that WE want to make".

A great game is a great game and it doesnt matter what platform it reaches. I feel the problem nintendo faces is the fact that parents are getting younger and if they are buying there kids a console they have this anti nintendo attidude due to the last couple of generations lack of 3rd party support. Its a bit of a controversial reason for loss of customers but ive seen it a lot. Perhaps nintendo should except theres 3 different consoles and like they used to have, they have there loyal fans.

My opinion is: The people who play Call of Duty all day are the casual gamers. They do what everybody else is doing, since Xbox 360 and Call of Duty is very "in" right now. Us Nintendo players are the hardcore gamers.
There are many people who would disagree with me though.

Eh, all joking aside the way I define gamers is:

Enthusiasts (a.k.a. "Hardcore") these people play games often, want the newest tech, consoles, new games etc. Gaming is perhaps there number one hobby in terms of time and money dedicated to it.

Recreationalists (a.k.a. Casual) People who don't usually game but will purchase a console for a select few titles. They may play once a week, play when friends come over, when they host parties, or they just bought it because it was a fad. They view console as toys more than a machine and gaming is nothing more than a quick pasttime.

Sorry, but I hate the terms "hardcore" and "casual".
