This is an interesting note from that story, though, -- "and not needing to upgrade hardware ever again."

What does that mean? Upgrades through software/firmware? Is that something we could see with Wii U?

It could be the ability to upgrade the hardware yourself like a pc. No matter what that says I refuse to believe it, their will always be the need to buy new hardware

There are so many things wrong with that comment that I don't know where to begin. The leap from this gen to next gen won't be that big, regardless of the company. Get over it. It is going to be WAAAAAY expensive for companies to do that kind of thing. No company is going to shoot themselves in the foot and do what Sony did with the PS3 (overpowering it beyond reason, and then charging $600 for it at launch). Please look at the facts before you claim that others are wrong, or saying things about their opinion like, "That's a fallacy." when it isn't.

The wii u is much more powerful. It simply is. Like I said before, it also has more work to do in two key areas:
1) pushing graphics to gamepad.
2) rendering graphics at 1080p or 720P for some games.
The graphics will be next gen. It may not startle anyone but there will be a notable difference.
It's going to be expensive for companies to develop their own engines... Not to create games using a licensed engine. That's one of the things Nintendo has taken the liberty of helping their partners with.
If you think there's anything wrong with what I mentioned, I will simply state that you are uninformed. No one said Nintendo overpowered the wii u. They did power it up nicely though. Nintendo will never be like Sony with foolish financial choices. And ps3 isn't overpowered. The 360 is actually more powerful in the games it can display. The cell on ps3 is gimped with a disabled core, only 256 lb ram, and a gpu that isn't quite able to render the polygons the 360 can.
Sony upt a freshly developed CPU in the ps3. That was mistake #1. It wasn't widely used in anything else so it was expensive. Sony also added bluray, a brand new media standard at the time. That was also a financially crippling move. Then they had to build out the rest of the system.

Nintendo hasn't done any of that. They built a cost effective gamepad and then built a powerful core system.

I have looked at the facts and can definitely say that Nintendo wasn't competing with the wii. They know what their competition is and that's what they aimed at. At launch the wii u will simply match the best later games of ps3/360. Next year, you'll see the real potential.
It's a great time to be a Nintendo fan.
