Will handheld console like the 3DS be taken over by the mobile gaming market, or will companies like Nintendo continue to succeed in this market. Discuss.

For causal gamers, yes it will. I believe that iPhone and Android has already taken over the causals right now.

I believe that handheld sales will go down but they will never die, I think Nintendo will keep their handhelds alive.

Casual gamers are generally console owners. Handheld gamers are a different breed. Handheld sales won't be dropping.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

There will always be a market for dedicated handheld gaming systems, simply because there will always be people out there who are looking to be playing an in-depth, high-quality video game on a dedicated platform, on the go.

I think as long as people are looking for substantial handheld experiences (like I am) the handheld market will continue in some manner.... But if Nintendo makes my 3DS a phone I would be very happy...

I really don't know what weirdo came up with this idea first. Even the most casual gamers want a game that has a lifespan longer than 3 days and a decent control.

I think on a longer timescale, there will be no use for handheld consoles, there will be good games for mobile phones. But it will take many many years until we are there.

In two gens the phones will probably be able to surpass handheld power some already have.

I don't think they ever will. There's too many phones out there, games will always try to go for the lowest specs to try and get the widest audience. It just wouldn't work well. Plus I don't want to spend so much money on a gaming phone and be out of two things if it breaks/gets stolen/etc

As long as handheld games start to become more like console games I think the hardcore gamers are going to stick with them. Then there are the download games for the handheld platforms that could be more casual games. That way handhelds are the best of both worlds.

Be wary, the suck is coming.

I think Mario Bros and Pokemon sales would like a word with that. :T

To be honest, I don't think handheld devices aren't going anywhere. As it so turns out, most people that buy Smartphones and Tablets are buying them not to play games, but for actually being phones or work devices. Then there's the matter of this... http://virtualboyzni...iware-then-ios/

So long as Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon for their handheld, it isn't going anywhere. Heck, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have both sold over six million copies. Pokemon Black and White combined sales? Over 14 million. Even Ocarina of Time has surpassed the two million sold mark. And at $40/$30 a piece...the gross profit on these games is $980,000,000. 20 Million short of a Billion Dollars.

I know that the $980 Million isn't the amount Nintendo themselves get, but even if they only got 1/4th of that, that's still almost 250 million dollars from four games, not including system sales at that.

tl;dr: Nintendo is making WAY too much money from their handhelds to go extinct anytime soon.

Just saying that looking at today's market. Atleast here in Sweden, nobody plays 3DS or DS. They play on their phones. But that's causal gamers who just plays games to kill time.

Pokémon isn't causal D: imo atleast considering evs, ivs, nature and stuff like that. RPGs aren't often considered causal.

I consider pokemon a more casual game because it's focused at younger children and people with spare time. Sure, it has its serious players and tournaments, but it's more for the younger crowd and can appeal to anybody.

I personally don't like using the "casual and hardcore" terminology, as it's rather up in the air in terms of what they really mean. but I feel that pokemon fits the casual crowd.

Also, the "here in Sweden" part of this is more anecdotal evidence. Maybe you just don't see them play it where you live, but that doesn't mean that absolutely no-one in Sweden has one.

Nobody I know that isn't a geek plays the only games they ever play on their smartphones though. I don't think a normal guy would have two devices with them if they can already play "causal" games that kill their time on their smartphone.
