I was wondering if you need the sensor bar to play wii u games, i'm asking because i'm still not 100% sure if i'm going to get the basic or deluxe pack. In Australia the basic bundle doesn't come with a sensor bar and i want to know if i will need one if i choose to get that bundle.

Depends on the game. Not the ones that use the gamepad exclusively.

I would say only for games that use the Wii remotes which is a lot of games but if you're playing only with the gamepad I presume that no you don't. All I know is that both bundles here come with it.

So only the wii remote will require the sensor bar?
I was only planning on getting the gamepad and a couple of pro controllers.

If the GamePad needed it not including a sensor bar would be a huge mis-step on Nintendo's part even with the "Everyone should already have one" logic it would be pretty stupid of them.

i think yes it is, because the pad and the pro controller are wireless so you need the sensor bar to connect em with the console

The Wii U Pro controller is wireless and will have around 30ft (10 M) of range

That makes sense, that's probably why they're not including it in the basic bundle for europe/australia/japan. If it was needed and not included that would be stupid.

The sensor bar doesn't work that way, then why is it that the ps3 or xbox360 don't use a sensor bar? A pro controller is a traditional styled controller just like the ps3 controller, so why wouldn't it work?

Okay, if the system uses Bluetooth (such as ps3 and xbox 360) or similar technology no it doesn't need a sensor bar to wirelessly connect the Gamepad. If it uses infrared ((Wii uses this) which is seriously outdated and they need to just stop using) then yes it will need the sensor bar.

okay i googled what the wii u uses just to make sure and according to the website i checked it connects to the console via bluetooth

apparently so, the wiimotes use infrared which requires the sensor bar whereas the gamepad and pro controller uses bluetooth so it doesn't need the sensor bar.

In short, yes. The only reason the basic bundle doesn't come with it, is because most Wii owners will opt for the basic version, as it's less stuff, they've already got the other bits they need.
If you need a sensor bar, get the deluxe version, or buy one separately.

it seems like i won't need a sensor bar since i won't be using the wii remotes

You can use two lit candles, two torches, or anything that give off light as a replacement for the sensor bar.
