I have sold my Wii U, so if I deleted you from NN before I sold it, or haven't accepted your friend request since, this is why.

Okay, if the system uses Bluetooth (such as ps3 and xbox 360) or similar technology no it doesn't need a sensor bar to wirelessly connect the Gamepad. If it uses infrared ((Wii uses this) which is seriously outdated and they need to just stop using) then yes it will need the sensor bar.

Nintendo's wiimote's use bluetooth to communicate from controller to console.
The infrared camera in each wiimote looks for the points in the sensor bar for the IR/pointer functions.

The uPad uses a variant of bluetooth, probably. but the bandwidth it would need to have such low latency between the stuff on the big screen and the uPad is some magic Nintendo themselves figured out.

Yeah I remembered that after I posted that (I remembered you can connect them to computers through Bluetooth) half the time I don't know what I am talking about or I am not thorough enough I feel I should make a disclaimer lol. I knew it used infrared for something and that something is the ability for it to track the remote. Obviously the Wii U doesn't need it for the Pad since it's not being used as a pointer I guess.

It comes with a sensor bar anyway

Only in N.A

The sensor bar is only use to the pointer functions, if you don't have the sensor bar, even with the wii, you can use the buttons and the motion controls without the need of a sensor bar. Try to play Zelda Skyward Sword after the calibrate of the wii motion plus and then disconnect the sensor bar and you can play all the game without the sensor bar(This is because the pointer function in Skyward Sword uses the motion and not the infrared camera)

it seems like i won't need a sensor bar since i won't be using the wii remotes

Then you have no friends lol. All 2 player games will use a remote or pro contoler. If the.games used a remote and nuncheck then your need a bar.

Nintendo's wiimote's use

Yea idk how they are doing there stuff. The ps3 amd vita is suppose to ne over wifi whicj is fast.
But i also dont know how fast the new bluetooth is but it got me wondering now.
How can the system do streaming to the game pad, pro controller and wiimote/nunchuck all at once.
Its either a beast or nintendo has something hidden.

Bluetooth is just overly simplified pairing of wireless devices.
It uses specific channels of normal wifi signals.
So basically it's the same thing as "wifi".

I don't have to worry about it too much because i decided to get the deluxe bundle so i'll get the sensor bar packaged inside :)

Can't the black strip around the camera be used as a sensor bar somehow?
Just had a look at the price of the sensor bars, and it is like 20% of the difference between the basic and the deluxe bundles

lol i remember when mines use to fall off everything we play mario party. I got a small piece of Velcro and stuck it to the tv and bar.
I just find it hard to believe that sony and xbox are charging $25-$30 for there camera/ sensor holders. which is just this like piece of plastic.

Yes it is.
Just depends on the game. The option is there, since it has an ir camera.

Not if you're playing multiplayer Wii games that require pointer functionality.

Nintendo's wiimote's use bluetooth to communicate from controller to console.

The primary reason why the sensor bar is included is for Wii games. If it was going to be a requirement for Wii U games it would be included in the basic bundle as well. Here in the UK and EU the basic bundle does not include the sensor bar.

That's a good point.
BUT no wii u console comes with sensor bars in Japan.
Or ALSO, I'm not sure if I'm disproving or proving your point more. :P
