Yet another detective work from Arkhandar here! :D

During the recent Japanese Wii U Nintendo Direct, the new Wii U HOME Menu was explained. In one section New Super Mario Brothers U was suspended via the HOME button. There we were able to see both the Web browser and Miiverse being acessed while the game was running. However, these are not the only apps you can run on background it seems. Take a look a the following pic from the scene:

In the Wii U HOME menu, while a game is suspended, while it may look somewhat similar to the Wii there are key differences.

On top we have, the currently being used account and the number of controllers connected. Bellow we have the Multitasking Apps. And bellow that we have, the reconnect controller, exit to WaraWara Plaza and the eManual buttons. On the buttom we have the exit the HOME menu button too.

Going back to the Multitasking Apps, as we can see it goes something like this:
  • Friends List
  • Miiverse
  • Nintendo eShop
  • Internet Browser
  • Nintendo TVii
  • Notifications/Messages (maybe? too blurry)
This is great news then. It means we can see who's online, post coments on Miiverse, access the eShop and download games apps and watch movies/TV shows all while a game is suspended. That really is fantastic.

So, what do think of this new feature? Do you think the Nintendo 3DS should allow you to access the eShop as a multitasking app too? And what do you think of the idea of watching Walking Dead while ZombiU is suspended? :D

This is very cool. Nothing is more annoying than having to close up a game on the 3DS to go on the eShop, Activity Log etc.

Very cool. Though 3ds cant hope to do this, because it only has like, 25 or so Mb on standby for multitasking apps and os, while wii u has an entire Gb.

Miiverse's forum/twitter stuff is entirely server side however. Since thats the case 3ds should be able to access that part of miiverse with a suspended game.

I have absolutely nothing to object. So many apps while the game being suspend, the more I truly want the 3-for-1 experience in the Wii U.

Wow, now when I have a tv show on. I don't need to quit my game. The Wii U is literally getting better every day. Bring it on November 18th!

I really like the multi-tasking idea. I just wonder what Nintendo has in store for online multiplayer. What happens if you press the home button to answer a message then? I tend to do it on 360 and PS3.

Awesome work Arkhandar! Good to see how accessible the Wii U is when a game is being played.

Also, that last 'blurry' icon on the full right I believe is the system update icon. Someone mentioned it on this forum somewhere.

As it turns out, according to the american manual, it's the "Download Manager" and it integrates notifications too, so that's awesome :D
