I've had pretty good experiences with Nintendo's customer service as well in the past, glad to hear they're still being awesome.

I hope you get your Wii U back in working order soon!

The system shouldn't allow you to play games or do anything really while it is updating, I don't think any other system allows this...

This statement is false. The previous statement is true.

RIP in peace Nintendo.

To anyone saying this was all my fault:

This is what it says exactly, System Freezes Unexpectedly While In Use | Wii U - Console
So really, I was screwed two ways, let a system sit there frozen and let it brick itself, or unplug the system and brick it. Stuff sucks.

To be fair if had just let it download and update without doing anything else at the time then the likelyhood is that it wouldn't have had a freeze and you wouldn't have had to unplug it. It's pretty well known the Wii U is prone to freezing unexpectedly at any time so why risk it by playing or doing other functions whilst its updating. Like some others have said I never do anything on any of my devices whilst they're doing a firmware update and wait until its done.

iOS devices let you do other things whilst the update is downloading but when its actually updating you can't do anything. As far as I'm aware no other devices other then the Wii U even allow you to do this. At the end of the day the rest of the system functions should be disabled when doing an update.

I know. I've been punching myself in the face over my stupid decision to try and play a game during the update, but seriously, they don't even give you an option to cancel the update or pause it, and I didn't even want to download it yet in the first place, which is a really dumb move from nintendo.

I'm so confused on why this even happens. Does it install and download simultaneously? Or does it just start installing automatically if it's in the background? @_@ You should be able to safely play a game while it's downloading new firmware.
