Wouldn't that come down to the developers/publisher? If they wanted they could just give you a code to download, but obviously they don't do that so in case you break it or lose it they'll get more money.
On the 360 you still need the disk.

When you install a game to the HD on the 360, you still need the disk. It reads it for a second to confirm you still have it, but it doesn't spin it at all during gameplay.

Sorry, my bad. Had a brain fart there. When you install a game to the HD on the 360, you still need the disk. It reads it for a second to confirm you still have it, but it doesn't spin it at all during gameplay.

And its possible that the laser will go out faster as it reads from disc more and more but its just how it is.
the ps3 doesnt let you install disc to hd and its been doing fine.

Please nintendo let us install the games on the hd´s
It's hardly a practical or viable option considering how small and how slow the internal storage is on the Wii U. Even the deluxe premium editions 32GB isn't enough. You would need to buy an external hard drive to take advantage of it and even those aren't going to be fast enough for it to be a smooth experience. If Nintendo had included larger and faster storage capacities it would have been worth it.

I certainly think this is a good feature but because the wii u hard drive is connected via usb it won't offer the speed benefits.
I think Microsoft offered it because they had a high failure rate of optical drives as they are run at a very high speed (12x) I think. The 360 dvd drive is even faster than the bluray drive on the ps3 despite the storage density on the ps3 being far greater.
One of the wii u benefits is the fast optical speed and additional memory so there is less need to store on an external hdd anyway. Its likely store bought wii u games will be as fast loading as downloaded games stored on an external hdd.

Preach on!!!!
If Nintendo make us buy our own storage (8-32GB is not enough) the least they could do is give us the option to install games directly.

so... why dony you just buy the download version of the game from the eshop, and download it to your external hard drive?
Easy question to answer.
I paid less on all my games then the cost of the downloads (8 Games so far). I can't take downloads to a friends house like I can a disk. Also I cannot sell my downloads back to stores like Gamestop and Best Buy like I can the disks.

I'm done with discs. This will be my disc-free system (excluding Nintendo Land... grrrr...). I'm just waiting for the e-shop to actually cost less than bricks and mortar shops (currently everything on the e-shop costs more than buying from a shop for some bizzare reason).
Not sure they will ever be cheaper in the e-shop. There are always stores out there that have sales and the retail price is what the e-shop and all other virtual stores (Sony, MS) sell games at most of the time. I am with the other poster above I would rather have the disc version cause then you can use on other peoples systems and can sell the game if you want.

You pay a premium for the pleasure.

People worry too much lol my old ps1 is still going strong after YEARS of abuse and that constantly reads disks.
How is it worrying too much when ALL optical drive based consoles have a much higher failure rate. So much so that there was a market for repairing the laser on the PS2. I actually got my PS2 for free because the laser had died and I repaired it myself. Also, both my Xbox and Xbox 360 had their drives replaced.
The number of CD/DVD drives I have had over the years on my PC is insane, highly unreliable in my experience.
As for speeds, USB 2.0 would easily be faster than the Wii U optical drive. While the Wii U optical drive is rated as fast as USB 2.0, that is peak speed which rarely happens. However as a HDD has a peak speed about 3-4 times higher than that, it would sustain Wii U optical drive speeds much more consistently than the optical drive could, and be much quieter too.
