I don't get it. Is Valve releasing a console now? Or is it Xi3's? I read so many contradicting stories, I don't even understand. It's a tweakable (like PC) console for tv's?
No sig.

Valve is releasing a console competitor. They didn't announce system specifics yet, the xi3 is just rumored to POSSIBLY be the steambox. It's just going to be a custom pc that runs on Linux using steam as the main focal point. It would be No different than if you hooked your pc to a tv , only used steam, and a controller along with your keyboard and mouse.

I don't think I can call that a console. It's more of a handheld. Also I don't understand Why the PC world wants to challenge the console world. They both are fundamentally different gaming types that attract different kinds of gamers. Or gamers do both like myself.

I agree with both of your statements PC game makers/manufacturers should stay in the PC world, However if Nvidia teamed up with a console maker like Nintendo or Microsoft there is a large amount of potential that would arise towards console graphics etc...

Also from what I've learned fro economics more competition is good for the customer because it causes companies to put out better products in order to be better or equal in terms of value (graphics, life span, higher quality games, console size (maybe), power consumption, cost etc...)....this is my opinion think what you will of it :)

Not necessarily. AMD already has made several console GPU's based off the Radeon architecture. I've always preferred Radeon over Geforce, but That's me personally.

I should have worded what i said better ....what i meant is if any high quality PC parts maker (graphics cards etc..) teamed up with a console maker like Nintendo or Microsoft the potential would be quite high

They do Capu. Companies like AMD and IBM,as well as others have. They build components based off the companies wants. You will never see a top end graphics card in a console do to costs. Top of the line graphics cards launch around the 600-800 $ mark. That's already double the price of the Wii U and then some. The fact is they develop specialized components that are cost effective and energy efficient for a home console.

i knew that but what i am really meaning is they should work together on the console as a whole not just a specific part....I'm curious to see the result

That won't happen , PC world and the console world are not destined to co-mingle in the way the Steambox wants to, and I highly doubt it ever will.

Valve will need to control the price a bit better if they want the console market.
They already have the PC market so they shouldn't set the price at PC-level.

Doesn't Big-Picture Mode make this kind of pointless?

Big Picture mode makes it the reason.
They're trying to drive steam into the living room, by making it easier to get into.

Yeah, but if you have a pc hooked up to a tv and a 360 controller, just use big picture mode and you're set.

There will be many computers developed with Steam in mind so there will be many different Steamboxes basically. But there will also be one main Steambox that will compete directly with consoles that is Linux based, but you can install windows as well if you choose. There's an interview on Verge.

There is no Steam Box, but something is coming.
The booth, which was remarkably empty, showed off gaming computers in small form factors connected to HDTVs and running Steam's Big Picture big-screen interface. However, none of them were Steam Boxes, or Steam Box prototypes, or even design concepts of what a Steambox could look like. According to Valve representative Tom Giardito, several of the systems were simply off-the-shelf Alienware systems running the Linux version of Steam with Big Picture.
Computer manufacturer Xi3 has been reported as the company making the Steam Box, according to several accounts from a press event Monday night. However, I confirmed that this is not the case. The Xi3 "Piston" computer was in Valve's booth next to an Alienware system, but neither were intended to be definitive, or even possible Steam Boxes.
According to Giardito, Valve's presence at CES is primarily to meet with hardware manufacturers to explore how a Steam Box interface or standard might be made. He said that there is no single Steam Box, and that there will be no retail Steam Boxes until lengthy testing processes have been completed. He noted that Xi3 is one of many hardware partners working with Valve, and that a Steam Box could become more of a standard for gaming PCsdesigned for HDTVs than a Xbox or PlayStation-like-product.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it ever amounts to anything, its a pc, with a 'steam big picture certified' sticker, not a console.
