The Wii U attach rate is:
43% lower than the Wii (http://en.wikipedia....i#Launch_titles)
50% lower than Gamecube (http://en.wikipedia....be#Launch_games)

Is this down to what a lot of people are claiming - bad marketing, or something more simple like the game selection, game prices, or something else?
What feels do you has?!

I'd say game selection. Quite a few of the "heavy-hitting" games were released awhile ago for the PS360, so most of the people that wanted them have already bought them.

It is a combination of several factors, including advertising, game selection, and market conditions.

1. Advertising

In short, at least in the US, the ads are all very similar and not very memorable. It is difficult to differentiate between the Wii U, NSMB U, and Nintendoland advertisements. Shooting them at the same time and editing them differently have have been good for the budget, but it is not good for memorable ads, imo.

2. Game Selection

The games are great, but the problem is that many of the games are available on other platforms. Many gamers, and parents of young gamers, purchased 3rd party games on their original release on other platforms. This leads to two possibilies: said consumers either bought a Wii U and didn't re-buy those games, or they simply held off on buying a Wii U all together.

3. Market Conditions

This section has two categories: the economy and the rise of competition. Economically, people have less disposable income now than when Gamecube and Wii launched. In the US, gas prices are higher, food prices are higher, and take home income is lower. As far as competition, the rise of smart phones and tablets is damaging the console market. It is a cheaper, mobile alternative to home console gaming. To some consumers, it is a perfectly viable substitute for their gaming needs/desires. The result of these two factors is people purchasing less games on consoles, in this case Wii U. And of course, there are a few absolutely dedicated Xbox and PlayStation gamers. Nintendo has those as well, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Most of the games right now are available on other systems or PC for a lot less.

The advertising for the console was shocking her in aus. There was no lead up to the launch. Just one TV ad that came out after launch. Eb games was pretty much the only place putting up posters etc.

most third party games are ports from a LONG time ago, for already established systems. Also, there is competition from other platforms for these same exact game versions. This was not the case at all for wii, or gc, because wii and gc (especially wii) didnt get the same games.

nsmb has always sold a lot, but never at the front end, its always been a slow burner, selling consistantly over a long period of time.

Wii launched with a freaking Zelda.

Earliest adopters are always dominated by the core. I love mario, but he is a distant third behind Metroid and Zelda. Especially his 2d games. I would have DEFINATELY snapped up a zelda at launch. All i have from nintendo right now is nintendo land, which was a pack in.

I want games for my wii u SO FREAKING BAD. But i dont want anything else thats out right now. So im waiting. Probably pick up some 360 or ps3 games on the cheap to pass the time. And I dont think im alone.

Bring the big games and they will come. They will come like a swarm of mosquitoes on a hot summers day in Australia during a heat wave when you are the last person or animal left to be eaten by them. Yes, they will come...

There was a rumor with this news that Nintendo might consider offering their first-party titles on other systems. I own a Wii U, not trying to troll or start anything, just saying I read it. I doubt Nintendo would torpedo their own system this way, but if it's their only way to make money...

Nintendo would quit making games before they quit making hardware.

This is what they told Bill gates when he tried to purchase nintendo to make games for microsofts entry into the console business (the og xbox).

Mario not a big enough 'gun'?

This statement is false. The previous statement is true.

RIP in peace Nintendo.

Not 2d mario. They sell in the 20 millions, but never front end heavy, they sell modest amounts, just continuously over the lifetime of the system until they build up into massive 20 almost 30 million sales.

Galaxy 'only' sells 10 million in comparison, but a large amount of those sales come as soon as the title is released, and moves systems with it.
