and a quad core q8300 isnt going to become redundant at all in the next few years neither, you are forgetting not everyone is out for benchmarking, nor to run at max enthusiast settings, some just want to play games with solid fps with reasonable graphics, a q8300 can handle any game now and the future for at least a few years.

The way your going everbody with a dual core is screwed haha, and every one with anything other than a i5 is also screwed, people need to get things into perspective and keep it real. man i could even run crysis once very high on just an E6750, people panic on hardware and theres no need. my son plays it on an E6550 with a gt430 at medium perfectly fine too lol

The steam box is going to run the amd A10 APU which gets around the same score as the q8300, man coupled with a gtx460 its going to be way better!, steam will soon be able to run on linux so people will be able to squeeze even more power fron the saved resorses of windows, so cheaper hardware is going to run faster very soon!

Actually, things will be changing soon in ways they havent for the past 7 years, because ps360 will no longer be holding back pc games.

People who havent been around very long have a hard time seeing the big picture, and those who have been around, get comfortable and complacant, and forget things can change. Things have stayed the same for nearly a decade. Thats half the lifespan or more for many people here. Its a long time.

They are about to start changing again.

oh, I said I PERSONALLY, wouldnt settle for less than an i5, but an a10 would be just fine.

'The steam box is going to run the amd A10 APU which gets around the same score as the q8300'

You are severely misinformed freind, a dual core i3 can handedly outperform the old 4 core q8300, (not too mention the q8300's socket 775 has been phased out by intel).... And the a10 rather heftily outdoes the i3 so.... yeah. Thats statements pretty wrong.

'run crysis once very high on just an E6750, people panic on hardware and theres no need. my son plays it on an E6550 with a gt430 at medium perfectly fine too'

Crysis huh. So hows it handle minecraft?

the problem with some of the reviews of the A10 is that some benchmark using the internal gpu, making the test un fair.

The original poster wanted to know of an upgrade that would yeild him average gaming for the next few years and cheaply. His q8300 he already has is fine, so no need to replace his motherboard or cpu, just a small upgrade of his GPU to a gtx460 and adding another 2gigs of ram would be perfect, and yield him a great improovment fot the next few years, it can run ANY game out now, yes its not going to be the best but thats not what he wants, telling people what you want 3dude and what you would accept is irrelevant to this help question, and is just confusing for the OP, i guess you have not worked in a computer shop before lol, not everyone wants MAX performance

The performance benches ive linked to tbe a10 for him dont use the internal gpu. It very clearly states precisely what it uses, and all tested processors use the same gpu's.

If I was trying to get him to get max specs i wouldnt be saying an a10 is fine, id be telling him to get an i7, and i havent once mentioned any gpu.

He asked what he should do to be prepared for the future, and you are setting him up for failure both with the change in priorities with the coming gen, and telling him to keep a phased out motherboard.

All you are going to do is delay him spending a little money now, on a rig that will be upgradable, spending money bit by bit as he wants, and forcing him to spend a lot of money all at once when he finds out he can no longer simply upgrade because his motherboard/sockets are phased out.

he asked for something to get him through another year or 2 lol, your telling him he needs a complete new rig haha

Well, if thats what hes asking for then thats absolutely fine. I was under the impression he wanted to be prepared for longer.

nobody knows what the future holds, intel might suddenly bring out a new APU faster than anything out now, AMD might. But there will be sucsesssors to the i series thats for sure, in a few years the op could look again at his upgrades and they will be far better things to choose from then i can guarantee, pc gaming as we know it is changing, and by then it will have changed

I have looked at this thread and am of the opinion that your pc is outdated.Have built 3 pcs myself and a couple myself.Depends mostly what sort of budget you have and what you can reuse. If you were to put a figure on your spend and what you intend to play it would be easier for the people in this thread to evaluate where the money would be best spent.

A10 apu in computing functions alone almost matches an i3 3220

However if intending to have a seperate gpu then intel is the best choice

the inbuilt graphics should enable you to play any current game

As an ugpgrade path you can stick a discrete gpu 6670 (around 50 pounds in uk) for dual grapics this gives a 35% approx boost to your graphics using crossfire tech. This may help keep your proposed rig current for a lot longer than the two years you state.
