How do you connect a Wii U to a computer monitor that doesn't have a HDMI port? I have to do that as I don't have a TV, though that will only be temporary. The monitor is an iMac 27 inch, and it has built in speakers. Also, I only need to connect the console to the monitor to set it up, because from a not so quick search, a TV is needed to set up a Wii U. Correct me if that is wrong though.

You can use HDMI to DVI conversion, but you'll need to check ebay to find a conversion cable with audio out so you can bridge the line into your speakers.
If your monitor supports component you can use that as well, but I had an issue with excessive overscan when I tried that.
