a full home theater system might have better sound if it's a high end brand, but the speakers that came with the z5500 are awesome and already paid for. They were the only speakers on the market that were THX certified when I bought them. $130 for the splitter is fine by me though, because I have multiple systems hooked up to this monitor fed through a mulit-in single-out HDMI switcher. My wii-u, my PC (which only outputs hdmi sound through the video card so not sure about that quality), and a PS3. The only system that won't hookup as surround for now is the wii u. the PS3 sends dolby digital through the toslink and my PC has the phone jacks on the back of the mobo.

I would, except that the z5500 is hands down the clearest and most powerful system I have ever found for computers. Logitech has never matched it in it's later models and creative doesn't come close. Used versions sell for more than I paid for mine brand new.
