#57432 What consoles are you getting next gen? (8th gen)

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 11:58 PM in General Gaming

WiiU only, sticking with one console for once, focus on buying games

I share your sentiments.

I usually have always had two consoles and a PC every gen. This gen I have all three consoles and a gaming PC. However, lately, I have begun playing many third party games on my PC because they just look so damn good in true 1080p and 8xAA, and the Xbox 360 controller for the PC is the best controller ever! I'm about to sell my 360 because I only keep it around for two reasons. 1 is my Mass Effect save files (although I also have ME1 for the PC and it is WAY better. The other reason my 360 is still around is because it will give be trade in credit if I use it towards the order of a Wii U at EB Games/GameStop.

My PS3 I just got in August, and I enjoyed all the exlusives it had to offer (didn't like inFamous or LittleBigPlanet). The only things I use my PS3 for now is to play Blu-RAys, PS1 games, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and when the Last of Us comes out.

I'm 23 now, and getting to the point where I am about to graduate, move out, get a house (already got the new car) and I can't afford to buy 3 consoles and upgrade my PC next gen lol.

That is why I am hoping (so far so good) that the Wii U gets third party games that stay console exclusive like Final Fantasy, etc. I will most likely use the Wii U the same way I used my Wii (for the first party exclusives) and the prospect of playing classic Nintendo franchises in native 1080p is too hard to resist.

TL;DR I am going back to my old ways next gen of only having Nintendo consoles and a PC (Wii U, 3DS, and PC)

#57431 Darkest Zelda Title

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 11:51 PM in General Gaming

Darkest: Majora's Mask
Favourite: Ocarina of Time (I don't think any Zelda will be more special to me, the point in my life that I played this game will never be recreated and it was just to awesome back in the day)
Least: Phantom Hourglass (handheld) Wind Waker (console)

Wind Waker took out two dungeons and replaced them with the most annoying part of WW, looking for triforce peices in the sea. My disdain for fetch quests knows no bounds. The sea travelling was abysmal.

#57429 Your favorite video game character?

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 11:42 PM in General Gaming

Man this is tough. I am a Nintendo guy but my favourite video game characters seem to be non-nintendo characters haha.

Sonic the Hedgehog (I always loved his games and when he transforms into SuperSonic it's just cool)
Master Chief (reading the Halo novels really got me interested in his character and what made him the soldier he is)
Commander Shepard
Luigi (I always liked Green more than Red, so I always played as player 2 for the NES and SNES haha)
Samus
Link (Young Link was 11 Years old in OoT, same age I was when I played it. It felt like me playing him)

If I had to pick one from all that, I would say Link.

#57428 Capcom: What we saw last E3 is not a reflection of everything this console is...

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 11:35 PM in Wii U Hardware

I think gamings best days were when it was just 2 consoles against eachother. Sega vs. Nintendo, Sony vs. Nintendo, etc. I would love for one console manufactuer to bow out (rumors that no PS4 is planned and over 4 billion in losses just from the PS3 alone hints to Sony but I doubt it) because it is much easier to own and buy just two console and avoid huge back catalogues and spending crazy money (I get Nintendo's consoles always, than get a second console later. This gen I own all 3 but my gaming rig is starting to see all the third party games that I bought the 360 and PS3 for. Now I just use my consoles for exclusives)

Microsoft seems to be taking all their consumers and briging them back to PC with Kinect for PC, Xbox 360 controllers for PC, all the apps and stuff, they seem to be converting to casual now.

They could bow out as well. I think we can all agree Nintendo won't bow out this coming gen so they are safe.

#57427 The Wii U is 2x the power of the Xbox 720

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 11:30 PM in Wii U Hardware

Based on the IGN rumors (which are probably BS) the power increases for each console go like this: (keep in mind an increase of 100% is a fancy way of saying "double". So to triple you would actually need 200% (200% plus initial value of 100% = 300"))

Xbox 360 = 100% (Base Point)

Xbox 720 = 500% (6x the power of the 360, 100+500)

Wii U = 400% ( 4x the power of the 360, 100+300)

The 720 is said to be 20% more powerful than the Wii U, so I took the value of 500 and multiplied it by 0.8 (80%) and you get 400%. But, if you take increase 400 by 20% you get 480, meaning the difference between the 720 and U is 500 and 480.

The math doesn't add up. If the 720 is 6x the power of the 360, there is no way it is 20% more powerful than the U because the U would be 5.8x the power of the 360, a miniscule difference that is only 3.33%. So somebody is lying here. In order for the 720 to be 20% more powerful than the Wii U AND be 6x or more powerful than the 360 it would need to be a power increase of 576% or 6.76x (lets just round it to 7x).

Basically, the 720 has to be 7x more powerful than the 360 in order to be 20% more powerful than the Wii U. So either the 6x more powerful rumor was a mistake (too high or low) or the rumor of being 20% more powerful than Wii U was wrong.

(I'm no expert in math but I got by percentages down haha)

#57330 The Wii U is 2x the power of the Xbox 720

Posted by 10k on 25 January 2012 - 04:42 PM in Wii U Hardware

Yeah first we hear the early dev kit of wii u is 50% more powerful than the PS3 and then we hear the 720 is six times more powerful than the 360 which is a jump of 500%. What are you going to believe? The 720 will have to be an $800 console to be six times more powerful than the 360. I think the next consoles will at most triple the ram and keep clock speeds the same on the CPUs and use newer GPUs that are a couple generations old.

#57171 Xbox 720 to be 20% more powerful then the Wii U

Posted by 10k on 24 January 2012 - 10:49 PM in Wii U Hardware

i think they will be smart enough to go all out on this console and at least support dx11 plus who knows maybe its highly customize remember its based off that series but who knows how much they changed it. hopefully its drastically different in the good way

The Shader Model is not as high as the 6670 so nintendo needs two things for sure from it's GPU, DX11 and SM5.0

I think for sure the card will be 40nm instead of the 55nm because Nintendo likes small components that dont generate alot of heat.

#57170 Skeptical about the controller...

Posted by 10k on 24 January 2012 - 10:47 PM in Wii U Hardware

the N64 controller was weird I will give you that. But once you actual hold it, it just feels so natural. Your left thumb on the joystick, your left index finger right on the Z button, the rest grips the handle. Your right hand rests comfortably right over the A, B, R, and C buttons.

That is what the Wii U is to me. Weird looking, but once you get a hold of it, it will seem natural. Like when I saw the Wii Remote being revealed as the controller I was like "WTF Nintendo! A TV Remote as a controller! YOu Fail!!!". Still bought a Wii on launch day and dont regret it.

#57165 Xbox 720 to be 20% more powerful then the Wii U

Posted by 10k on 24 January 2012 - 10:07 PM in Wii U Hardware

well here we are people the time has come where i think i can declare that nintendo has another winner on there hands i cant wait for the wii u.

btw if one thing is needed its dx11 i cant stress this enough we NEED IT

Agreed. I'm skeptical though because the Radeon RV700 architecture cards only support DX10.1 while the 6670 supports 11. That alone could leave the Wii U in the dust again and nintendo will have another Gamecube on their hands.

But it is supposedly a customized card based off of the Radeon 4xxx series, so maybe they can add in DX11 support.

#57163 Xbox 720 to be 20% more powerful then the Wii U

Posted by 10k on 24 January 2012 - 10:01 PM in Wii U Hardware

6670 also supports DirectX11 and uses a more sophisticated shader model (something that held back the Wii greatly, not just the fact it wasn't HD). But the 4870 can do more processing at once, fill in more pixels quickly, do things faster and let's not forget the 4870 will be customized to be smaller and produce less heat and use up less energy (probably around 40nm instead of the 55nm), and they may add DirectX11 support. But if you do a straight comparison, the 4870 wins in many benchmarks.

My source:
4870 = 1741 G3D Mark
6670 = 1227 G3D Mark
(Higher Number is better)

http://www.videocard...=Radeon+HD+4870
http://www.videocard...=Radeon+HD+6670

As you can see in the link below, no matter how much VRAM Nintendo dedicates to the 4850 or 4870 (either 512MB or 1GB). The 512MB 4850is most likely if also have 1GB of regular RAM

Ignore the GTX 295, that's my own video card and I got curious :P

http://www.graphicsc...om/page/compare

Also ignore the orange and red bars, you have to include 8 video cards so i just chose randomly. Focus on the 6670 and up (yellow and green)

EDIT: Can't post the pics. Use the website yourselves. Compare the video cards it gives you expected performance % it's awesome.

Even the lowest end 4850 is said to outperform the 6670 by 10.6% (that's the cheapest possible Rv700 card Nintendo could use.)
The mid-range RV700 card the 4870 512GB outperforms the 6670 by 39.4%
The upper-mid range card 4850 1GB outperforms the 6670 by 15.6%
The highest RV700 card the 4870 1GB outperforms the 6670 by 44.3%

#56348 Is "Wii U" the console's final name?

Posted by 10k on 22 January 2012 - 09:14 AM in Wii U Hardware

yea im pretty sure the name is finalized but im hopefull they change it. i just want the console to seperate its self from the wii brand

No matter how false it is, the Wii name is associated to shovelware and casual games by the hardcore. I agree that if Nintendo wants to gain back the hardcore they should get as far away from the  Wii branding as possible.

Found the statement Iwata made about the wii u not being cheap and not being priced at $250

#54837 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by 10k on 15 January 2012 - 10:19 PM in Wii U Hardware

Who is gonna trade in they're wii and some games to buy the U. I have 250 if I trade in my wii it should take 50$ off. Then I can buy if it's 300.

I will only trade in my wii if I know for certain my VC games like majoras mask are able to transfer to an SD card and be played on the wii u. I'm not paying twice for them. Also, I have a bunch of 360 games I plan on selling to, maybe even my 360 as I now have a PS3 as a secondary console.

#53975 PlayStation 4 will probably be alot stronger then the Wii U and Xbox 720

Posted by 10k on 13 January 2012 - 02:28 PM in Wii U Hardware

Actually there is a rumor being started That Sony is not going to make the PS4 but instead make a smart Tv that does everything including playing games, and it's supposed to compete with apples iTV. So there won't be an actual PS4 console per say, but Sony will still make gaming hardware, it will just be included with their smart 3DTV's and it will be around 2016.

how was the wii priced?

$249.99 USD and CAD on launch date. He said it won't launch at the same price as the wii and it won't be cheap. I'm going with $350+

#53775 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by 10k on 12 January 2012 - 04:46 PM in Wii U Hardware

Watch the video posted on these forums about the Wii U pricing. Iwata and Reggie said the Wii U wont be cheap. $299 is cheap. $350 is middle of the line. $400+ is expensive. I keep saying the wii u will cost $349.99 but I'm starting to read articles and quotes from Nintendo and watch videos and see DIY's like IGN and it's starting to look like the Wii U is gonna be priced at $399.99 or $379.99

#53774 nintendo fan on how to win next Gen.

Posted by 10k on 12 January 2012 - 04:41 PM in Wii U Hardware

The problem is most of Nintendos exclusives are not aimed at the hardcore western audience (mainly FPS's and open world games)

If Nintendo got its own gears of war, it's own halo and was capable of releasing hardcore third party games like GTA V and Red Dead games, etc, plus adding on its own first party games it can succeed.

Nintendo's problem was never that it had weak hardware, the problem was it always had one feature that scared away third parties since the N64. The N64 had way better graphics than the Playstation, but it used cartridges instead of discs, which was more expensive to manufacture and couldn't hold as much data (FF VII was abandoned on the N64 because of this). The GameCube had the hardware to run GTA III and other big franchises but it used minidisc hardware that only held 1.5GB of data instead of the 4.7GB DVDs that the Xbox and ps2 used.

This gen, Nintendo is finally using the same discs (blu-ray like), HD visuals that are almost triple that of the PS3, it has standard buttons for regular games, and a touch screen for the casuals, and also the touchscreen and buttons can be combined to add new ways to play. So they have everything all the competitors have, but they also have a tablet to differentiate themselves from the competition. The only thing that can hold the wii u back with third parties is its online system. Will it be like xbox live and assign gamer tags, or will we have to make new accounts for every third party game that wants to use online?

#53767 Your hired to change the Wii U's name. What would you call Nintendo's...

Nintendo-U just take out the Wii part, Nintendo Universe, Utopia, Unstoppable etc....Hey I like it >_>

I like that actually. The Nintendo U. Sounds nice. Go to eb games and ask for a multiplatform game like assassins creed "would you like that for the PS3, 360, or the U?"

One syllable.

#53406 Wii U unveil timeline?

Posted by 10k on 11 January 2012 - 01:32 PM in Wii U Hardware

I hope? It releases in summer or before my birthday (June 23rd) maybe pull a dreamcast and launch it at E3.

My prediction? September.

Everyone else's prediction and the most likely? November.

NES - October 1985
SNES - August 1991
N64 - September 1996
GCN - November 2001
Wii - November 2006

All dates are north American.

The earliest they have ever released a console in NA is august. The earliest in Japan was July (NES).

#53402 This is why Nintendo should have stayed home.

Posted by 10k on 11 January 2012 - 01:15 PM in Wii U Hardware

Yet, Sony and Microsoft haven't released any official information about their next-gen consoles, either, so why is Nintendo on the chopping block for releasing so little? The PlayStation 4 will most likely may not make an appearance at this year's E3, if we take Kaz Hirai's statements at face value.

You should read IGN users comments on the article about "Kaz Hirai says 'no PS4 at E3'" it's hilarious. All these users are getting mad saying "we can't let competitors get a huge lead again!" and "PS3 is old, we need new hardware".

I think the problem for Nintendo was that rumor leaks in April (Project Café) forced Nintendo to reveal the Wii U at E3 before they were ready. Apparently Retro only got a dev kit around Xmas 2010 so nothing was ready. No game trailers, no hardware specs, no actual game demo's. Nintendo probably rushed to reveal something, anything, for 2011. That is why we still know nothing about the Wii U. The problem is now Sony and Microsoft have seen the main premise behind the U and they will copy it for their next gen consoles and just add more powerful hardware. Nintendo should have and probably did want to reveal at E3 2012 and have proper game reveals, trailers, final hardware designs and specs, and release it for holiday 2012 so Sony and Microsoft would fall behind and be shellshocked.

But revealing it last year was like a country going to war against another and announcing it first lol. "hey guys, we're gonna attack you next year at this time, day, location, with these weapons and tactics".

Whereas if they did their reveal in 2012 it would have been more like "BOOM! The War is on MOFO's, what's that? You're not ready? Too bad!"

#53399 Wii U at GDC 2012?

Posted by 10k on 11 January 2012 - 01:00 PM in Wii U Hardware

The only thing Nintendo has done to frustrate me so far with the Wii U is it's hype. Not many people are excited about it, know about it, or know its a whole new console. And if Reggie didn't flat out deny the wii u launching around E3, then why isn't Isis thing being marketed like mad right now. Hell, I keep calling stores to pre-order it and they aren't accepting pre orders yet and we could see this thing in 5-7 months from now.
