#227894 Need PC purchase advice

Posted by bornsupercharged on 01 July 2013 - 04:25 AM in General Gaming

That wasn't lost on me.

The games he mentioned are made for Mac. But not all games are.

Macs have awesome gaming hardware. No they don't, they're typically overpriced for what you get and PCs offer more flexibility to upgrade components later.

And he also said music and school. Seems you forgot those. Macs are best for music and a must in many education environments. Total garbage, there's zero difference in music from a PC to Mac - obviously you're a fanboy. I'm in college and there's no educational requirements for having a Mac at all, nor do my kids or other people I know in various levels of schooling require any type of Mac product. 100% false statement.

He can also run windows on a Mac, either virtually or on a separate partition. It's the best of both worlds. Except running windows on it defeats the purpose of getting a Mac, as you claim Macs do everything just as good or better why would be want to buy a license for Windows and dual boot? Costly Mac + Windows License = way more than a more powerful PC would have costed him.

Why anyone settles for a pc anymore is beyond me. Why anyone pays for overpriced Apple products is beyond me.

Macs do it all. Except the games that they can't play and the DRM music it can't play.

And you won't need to upgrade as often. Or you could get a PC and when you DO need to add more ram or swap out the battery or hard drive, you can. Derp.

#226587 Do you prefer 3ds original or the XL?

3DS XL by far - the screen size is a major perk for me. I absolutely love it. Wish it had dual sticks but yeah, it works.

#226586 When do you think Nintendo will unveil the successor to the 3DS?

Posted by bornsupercharged on 26 June 2013 - 09:59 PM in General Gaming

They just got good support going for the 3DS, there's no way it will be before 2016. At the earliest I think 2017. There's absolutely no game out right now that takes full advantage of the 3DS capabilities, it has room to grow and will easily make it to 2016. I don't know, I can't predict the future, but logic says they will want to milk it for all its worth.. if the Wii U doesn't do great, they might want to move out of the console arena and go solely into the handheld area.

#226104 DFC Intelligence says their Wii U sales forecasts are higher than the GameCube

Posted by bornsupercharged on 25 June 2013 - 05:27 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Well, people always assume that a successor will always do better than the previous one. That's why people think the PS4 will fly off shelves on launch.

Um, companies should hope that their new product will do better than their previous one..

And the PS4 will fly off shelves AROUND THE WORLD on launch (on their respective launch dates in various countries). The rest of the world doesn't want the BS media crap that the Xbox One comes with, and even if they did it still isn't even compatible with their service providers. The PS3 outsold the 360 everywhere except the USA. It'll be the same for the PS4 this time around, except that here in the US we may actually have a chance of the PS4 selling more thanks to the blunder of PR mistakes, pricing mistakes, and policy mistakes that Microsoft has made.

A potential spy device forced upon our living rooms, at $100 more for a less powerful console, the worst of the big 3 in terms of indie support, and a very out of touch corporate sentiment with gamers. Anyone who gets the Xbox One is either a fanboy or just has too much money on their hands. There's absolutely no reason to get the Xbox One, any of the good 3rd party games will eventually make their way to the PS4, and any first party games is just putting more money into Microsofts pocket. Watch, I bet they'll try to implement their DRM crap again in the future.

#226046 What if in a few years Nintendo made a Wii U RAM Expansion Pak?

Posted by bornsupercharged on 25 June 2013 - 01:47 PM in Wii U Hardware

2GB DDR3 is plenty for Wii U games - Nintendo would have put more if it required more. Consider this, the PS3 only has 512MB. The Wii U has 4 times the amount as the PS3. How much better graphics than the PS3 do we really even need? Fun games > amazing graphics that are crap to play.

#225912 Club Nintendo Platinum

Posted by bornsupercharged on 25 June 2013 - 04:34 AM in General Gaming

Lego City Undercover is one of the best, if not THE best, game out for the Wii U. Hands down. It's GTA style fun, with an actual story line and great game play mechanics. I also got Yoshi's Island and Luigi U but haven't had time to play them yet.

Here's my current status:

"2013 Elite Status: Platinum (1780 coins)"

As for what the rewards will be, they haven't announced it yet. Typically its early July when they let us all know what we'll be getting. I have a feeling it will be something Luigi related. I just really hope its not a luigi hat like others are speculating.

#225696 Sony says Vita was developed for PS4 more than PS3, not unreasonable to own both

Posted by bornsupercharged on 24 June 2013 - 05:28 AM in General Gaming

Actually that is not confirmed.  What I read strongly implies that its connecting to the PS4 directly over ITS WiFi, like how it works when used as a controller for Little Big Planet 2 on PS3.  That said as its using 2.4Ghz the range may still be better than the Wii U, although it may also be more laggy as your neighbors WiFi is more likely to interfere.

I would HOPE that they do give us the choice to use the LAN like on PS3, but that added a fair bit of latency so they might not want to do that.  They certainly haven't been pushing it as "play your games on PS Vita when away from home" like they did with Remote Play on the PS3.  Although if your broadband is good enough it should be perfectly plausible.

As for people claiming Sony are pushing PS Vita as ONLY a companion for the PS4, don't be silly.  Of course they were pushing it as that recently because the PS4 is the big deal right now.  They clearly expect people to have the intelligence to realise that the PS Vita is a portable games console.  It makes sense to be pushing what ELSE it can do once PS4 launches.  They are hoping PS Vita owners will want to buy a PS4 for it (its definitely a factor for why I am getting PS4), and letting potential PS4 buyers know that they might want a PS Vita too.

I gathered my information directly from Sony:

"Remote Play on the PS4™ system fully unlocks the PlayStation®Vita system’s potential, making it the ultimate companion device. With the PS Vita system, gamers will be able to seamlessly play a range of PS4™ titles on the beautiful 5-inch display over Wi-Fi access points in a local area network."

So what I said stands true :)

#225477 Defending the Xbox One against the hate

Then it would be a two party war because see with PS4 targeting its core demographic and... oh...hi Apple *giggles* is that a new controller design your getting a patent for? Its smexy..

While I agreed with a lot of what you said, it's mind boggling that you will diss Microsoft for DRM and then say hi to Apple.. gaming on a theoretical "Apple console" would most definitely be all digital and you'd be locked into their app store, where only games they approved would be allowed. Apple has the worst DRM policies and are VERY unfriendly to mature content, which a lot of video games these days have. There's no way Apple can compete in the console video game market, only Apple fanboys would buy their crap.

#225260 Sony says Vita was developed for PS4 more than PS3, not unreasonable to own both

Posted by bornsupercharged on 22 June 2013 - 06:33 AM in General Gaming

What would be better is if you could play 3DS games on the TV with your Wii U, that would be awesome! :D

Very, very unfortunately I do not think Nintendo would do this. They are still set in the 1990s mentality, look at their online gameplay/multiplayer functionality.Until they get some SERIOUS rollover of upper management, with fresh minds, I don't see it happening. It would be great, but so would a pokemon MMO game - people have been saying it for YEARS but Nintendo doesn't listen or refuses to embrace it.

I'm gonna hold a level of positivity in mind about this. As it is with the Gamepad for the Wii U, how they incorporate the Vita into PS4 functionality will be important. They have the capacity to do something amazing that blows anything the Wii U does to that point.

Given that they are technically two separate devices that can operate on their own, they are definitely capable to do something that even the Wii U can't. It would be interesting to see if they can actively pursue this avenue.

So you know how some games on the Wii U do not have the off screen capability? It's different than the Wii U GamePad because every single PS4 will be playable directly on the PS Vita - with exception to motion controlled/pseye games. As in, I can take the next Gran Turismo into my bathroom/bedroom and play it on my PS Vita if I wanted, regardless of distance to the PS4 itself since it does it over WiFi. The Wii U GamePad has a much shorter range because you're communicating with the Wii U directly, so it's about 30 feet open-range. My wifi goes over a hundred feet easily, I have an ASUS Dark Knight RT-N66U router.. arguably the best ranged wireless router ever made.

I also agree with you and I imagine Sony could also do more with the Vita, beyond making it a second screen as well. In fact, if you check the PS4 page, they already list iOS and Android devices as being able to be second screens for the PS4. So your iPad or my Nook HD+ can become second screens. It even says you can watch the game being played on your console via an app.. that's amazing innovation right there. Of course, I'd prefer the PS Vita as a second screen/controller over a tablet/phone because it actually has joysticks and physical buttons - something tablets/phones will never be able to replace.

#224934 Sony says Vita was developed for PS4 more than PS3, not unreasonable to own both

Posted by bornsupercharged on 21 June 2013 - 05:56 AM in General Gaming

Oh, come on. It's not like Sony is just going to go "herp, no PS Plus for you even though you paid for it" or "Derp, no PS Plus Subscription? WIPE THIS MAN'S HARD DRIVE IMMEDIATELY"

Getting the games back is as simple as buying a subscription off of the PSN or buying a PS Plus card.

Do you not 100% own the games? Yeah. Thing is, you still get to play them without any "ur free trial haz end lol" crap, and the subscription is such a great deal between the discounts and free games offered that there's very little reason to not stay subscribed. Plus, I think it's required to use online multiplayer functions with the PS4, so now there's very little reason to not subscribe. :L

Exactly my thoughts. It's only $50, cheaper than one of the AAA title games they give you. And don't forget, it's not just a one time thing - they release new titles for you to grab for free weekly.. so that $50 pays for itself quick. Not to mention that PS+ is necessary to play online multiplayer as Pappa GameCollector said.

#224734 Sony says Vita was developed for PS4 more than PS3, not unreasonable to own both

Posted by bornsupercharged on 20 June 2013 - 03:22 PM in General Gaming

Yeah, but you also have to pay for PS+, right? That also adds to the full price.

There are just two problems: the price of memory cards and the fact that people don`t want the Vita even with all the perks. And even if they did, the whole package is just too expensive. Look at the early days of PS3: no matter the value offered, there`s a limit people are willing to pay.

Actually i saw a promotion where for a memory card (39$, i think) you got 10 games free.

No my Vita came with 1yr free PS+ and a 4GB memory card. In addition to using it to play PS4 games for off-tv play, it gave me over 20 games and PS+ for $299. Doing the math, that's $14.95/game - and it doesnt include all the games that I get to add to my collection over the next 12 months. They rotate in more free games every week, and once you download them they're added to your collection permanently (so long as your PS+ subscription is active). Assuming just 1 game per week (even though its always more than that), that's 52 more games + the 20 already = 72 games / $299 = $4.15 per game. I'm talking Saints Row 3, Unit 13, Uncharted 3, Little Big Planet 2, etc. Well worth the price, far more value than XBox Live Gold ever provided me.

It's sad to see that the Vita is now being made as an add on to the PS4. It'll have some cool features like cross play, but I can't see myself doing it that much.

Actually that is the secondary reason I got the Vita - the primary reason being it came with a year of PS+ which gives me a ton of games for free. Pays for itself in no time, while also letting me play my PS4 from any room in my house on the Vita. Coupled with our Wii U, my 4yr old son can play the Wii U GamePad, my wife can watch TV and I can play any PS4 game directly on the Vita. At $249 it doesn't make sense as a separate controller alone, however I'm looking at it as a value added package.

We'll have to agree to disagree, because the NSA's actions are entirely illegal.

Posted by bornsupercharged on 20 June 2013 - 11:57 AM in General Gaming

The multiplayer still shares the same assets, models, textures, physics engine, and other arbitrary game code with the campaign.  There is still a lot to download to start the multiplayer portion.

FiOS doesn't have an 85MB/s level, they have a 75MB/s level, which costs $90/month on its own.  You also assume you have great throughput to Sony, which is funny, shows how little some people understand what theoretical maximum throughput means.  The PS4 will still be limited to a certain number of concurrent connections, not enough to even scratch the surface of the pipe you have.  You will get things at around the same pace as someone with much lower bandwidth, as the connection limit will undoubtedly be optimized for the most popular broadband connection level, 15Mbps.

With a larger pipe you can do more at any given time, but it doesn't ensure that you will have a connection to a given server that is any faster (wider) than anyone else.  If they are able to increase the number of allowed concurrent connections dynamically it would be faster, but that usually makes the experience worse for those with slower connections, because you are chewing up a big portion of Sony's bandwidth.

I'm a software engineer, I know what speed my internet is and I fully understand throughput:

2786609983.png

I just downloaded Uncharted 3 which is exactly 40GB and it took an hour and 15 minutes - you do the math.

#224616 First Look: The New PS4 Interface Preview

Posted by bornsupercharged on 20 June 2013 - 11:41 AM in General Gaming

that's not what I was pointing out.  The download bar went from 0 to 50% in three seconds.  Then he got a prompt 30 seconds later that it was installed.  I don't care what streaming technology they use, it will never be that fast, unless you happen to be connected to Sony's LAN.

Sure, but it's a video, did you want to watch 10 minutes of progress bar? Anyway, checking the video again, he downloaded the multiplayer portion first so it would have been a lot faster than download the whole game / campaign and all. I have Verizon FiOS 85Mbps so it would take me about an hour and fifteen minutes to download a 40GB game.

Actually, what the NSA was doing was perfectly legal.  Unethical, but legal.  Microsoft has no choice but to participate, only non US companies can outright decline.

Otherwise I agree with your points.

"Article VI of the Constitution requires that all US laws comply with the Constitution. Regardless if Congress has been approving these illegal searches, they are clear violations of the 4th Amendment and therefore the empowering laws are invalid."

The magic of marketing.  Suddenly 25-50GB games download in 35 seconds, and the system can guess what you are going to type based on the first three letters.  Seems legit.

You realize Sony already touched on the download piece, they've optimized their system to download core pieces first and download the rest in the background so you can start playing quicker.

"For starters, it will now be possible to play games on PS4 even if the downloading is not yet completed by using the effective streaming technology used in the next generation gaming console"

#224606 Defending the Xbox One against the hate

Posted by bornsupercharged on 20 June 2013 - 11:26 AM in General Gaming

1. And what the NSA is doing isn't illegal? And Microsoft wasn't participating?

2. "require DRM" doesn't even make sense. They went back on their 10 person family sharing, why don't you mention that? And you can't loan digitally purchased games anymore either, where is your comment on that?

3. The best online feature the 360 had is multiplayer, period. The XBox Live paywall forces you to pay $60/yr even if you already pay for netflix - lame.

4. I had a Kinect with my 360, guess how many times I played Kinect games? Once and returned them - talk about a crappy gimmick. As for voice commands, yeah I tried that in Forza Horizon, it's entirely pointless. I dont want a Kinect again, it has no purpose for me.

5. Yeah Sony has more; even the PS3 from 2010-2013 they had about 3 times as many as the Xbox 360.

6. Sony has Ustream (share button built into the controller), and TV Tuner is another gimmick. I dont use TVii on the Wii U, and I wouldn't use the dumb TV Tuner on the XBox One either.

7. $100+$60 for the XBox Live Gold membership to use any of the online features. Make it $399 and take out the Kinect requirement and I'd buy one.

8. The Wii U doesn't have great 3rd party support, not sure who you're trying to argue with there.. it's pretty apparent. But hopefully going into 2014 that will change. I like how instead of comparing the XBox One to the PS4, you took a dig at the Wii U because you knew the PS4 has better 3rd party support than the XBox One.

I was a huge 360 fan, had a PS3 that I never really played because I preferred the 360 controller. But I lost faith in Microsoft when they lost sight of what consumers were wanting and asking for. Instead of developing all these DRM features, they could have innovated further. Who knows, maybe if they hadnt wasted millions on implementing their policies, they could have reduced the cost of the XBox One. Now they've already written the code, but they're going back on it and having to turn it all off. Waste of time and money on Microsoft's part. We as consumers pay the price for their mistake.

I am buying a PS4 because I like their game lineup better, they have more original IPs and better 3rd party support. They also have the PSVita which will be able to play any PS4 game (that doesnt require the PS Eye) streamed from your PS4 - that is AWESOME similar to the Wii U.

#224602 Sony says Vita was developed for PS4 more than PS3, not unreasonable to own both

Posted by bornsupercharged on 20 June 2013 - 11:14 AM in General Gaming

400+60 (game)+ 200/249 = 660/709

Guess we will need to find another job again! :P

Unfortunately the preposition would probably be better if Vita was a tablet. At least that way, people could justify spending so much for the whole package - as in more used for Vita than just being a second screen.

Technically you get 18 games (12 PS3 + 6 Vita) with PS+; I just got a PSVita from Gamestop, some special edition one where I also got Unit 13 (so 19 games). Then they updated the list tuesday and I got a few more games, that's over 20 games for $299. And I can use the PSVita in the same manner that we use the GamePad on the Wii U - play on the PSVita directly without the TV on. I love my 3DS XL, but I'm also enjoying the PSVita too. Yeah the 4GB memory card the PSVita comes with is small, but I got the 32GB for $80 off Amazon and I can download whatever games I want / remove them once I beat them and download them again at any time.

#222826 I don't think people realize that there are two sides to the used game issue

Posted by bornsupercharged on 16 June 2013 - 05:10 PM in General Gaming

Everything you buy to do with software is just a license to use the software, the physical disc is worth a fraction of a cent.

You can not sell your license to that software, read the fine print. Therefore, you can not sell the disc's contents, therefore, you can not sell the disc.

What gamestop are doing is piracy, it's just done by a huge company who also happens to make the software companies money.

Sorry but you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

Check the back of most any DS game's booklet. "Game & Accessory Warranty" - "Nintendo warrants to the original purchaser that the product (games and accessories)...".

Keywords: Original Purchaser; Games

Meaning I purchased the game - NOT a license to PLAY the game. I literally OWN my copy of the game. I OWN my physical product. They WARRANTY the product I received.

When you buy a game, you OWN the game. Period. End of discussion.

#222673 Sony's Secret DRM Plan same as Xbox One?

Posted by bornsupercharged on 16 June 2013 - 09:30 AM in General Gaming

In case you guys dont remember, Sony filed an anti-used games patent back in January. It sounds EERILY familiar to what Microsoft has done with the Xbox One:

http://www.screwatta...ed-games-patent

Does anyone else think Sony might have a secret DRM plan in place? We already know that they said used games will be left up to the 3rd party publishers - meaning they could require one-time codes to play online or get characters etc. But what I'm talking about is a "flip of the switch", behind the scenes, type of thing that essentially implements the same DRM policies that Microsoft is doing.

This IS Sony, after all. They are major RIAA supports, they are in the music/movie/gaming industry and to they loathe piracy/second hand content that doesn't make them money.

I did pre-order a PS4, extra controller and Battlefield 4 yesterday at Gamestop because I really hate the Xbox One policies. But the more that I think about it, the more afraid I am that I'm buying into a ploy of sorts, and that Sony is over-promising on their comparably-relaxed policies. I don't want to be $600 into the PS4, only to find out that 3rd party publishers of PS4 games will also be able to determine what used games can sell for, how I can lend games out, etc.

One last thing.. assuming Sony really has no plans at all to implement the same DRM as Microsoft, I think it was perhaps a brilliant move by Sony to file that anti-used games patent. It essentially made Microsoft think - GREAT! Sony is doing it too, consumers will have no choice! So at E3 Microsoft didn't hesitate to tell us all about their DRM policies because they truly thought Sony was going to be in the same boat. So Sony's patent suckered Microsoft into shooting themselves in the foot, while Sony was left to gain HUGE leads in popular votes across basically every poll out.

What do you guys think?

I already pre-ordered this at Best Buy yesterday. The title is literally "Xenoblade" for the Wii U. Not X, Not Xenoblade U, just "Xenoblade". I realize it won't be out until 2014 but I definitely want one of the first copies. Xenoblade Chronicles was amazing.
