#47159 WiiU Trophy/Achievement system

Posted by 10k on 12 December 2011 - 05:23 PM in Wii U Hardware

I wrote on article on ign about this. I would rather have power stars from Mario as gamerscore like Xbox 360. Trophies seem weird to me. But Nintendo has so many iconic symbols like mushrooms and stars that they could do a trophy Ike system.

I also think that Nintendo should name their online service "Nintendo Stream" (a rumored name for wii u, along with café

#47160 Wii U is supposedly "NOT" next gen

Posted by 10k on 12 December 2011 - 05:29 PM in Wii U Hardware

The difference between the Wii U and PS4/Xbox Next wont be like the wii and ps3. It will be like the difference between the GameCube and the Xbox 1, which isn't that big. Games will still be ported to it.

If the wii u specs are true, the wii u will be leaps and bounds ahead of ps3 and not that far from a ps4. This generation won't be a big leap like the leap to HD was. The next gen will focus on true 1080p at 60 fps with 4x AA instead of the upscaled crap on the current gen software with no AA (halo 3 was run at 640p, cod is run at 720p and only 30 fps)

#47161 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by 10k on 12 December 2011 - 05:32 PM in Wii U Hardware

I priced out some comparable computer parts that the wii u is rumored to have and with retail markup included it came in at around $372. That's without the controller which will probably be around $100 so it's save to say $450-500 is a good bet of a launch price. I have pics to show along with specs

#47168 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by 10k on 12 December 2011 - 06:23 PM in Wii U Hardware

CPU: Quad Core AMD 3.0GHz, 6mb of L3 cache (also known as the eDRAM ppl are mother doging about, which the processor from IBM can hold a maximum of 4mb a core, 32mb max). Nintendo will most likely have 16mb of eDRAM (they are getting it customized after all)

GPU: ATI Radeon 5870 512mb GDDR5 (there is a 1GB model but I think Nintendo is going to share the ram between the CPU and GPU and I think they won't dedicate more than 512mb of video memory

RAM: 1024mb (1GB)

Motherboard that works with AMD processor and on board six channel sound (six channel sound was announced for Wii U)

And a 380w power supply to handle all these functions.

Basically the Wii U should have 1.5GB of total RAM shared or 1gb system memory and 512mb dedicated to the GPU. A lot of ram is needed to steam two wii u tablets. 16mb of eDRAM will help the CPU processing immensely and allow for better AI and quicker load times. This GPU (the 1gb version at least) was benchmarked with Cyrsis with AA and 1080p at around 30fps so it can handle some crazy games.

The green and blue bars are the closest resolutions to 1920x1080p

Shouldn't their be a possibility of Nintendo being able to get these parts at a lower price since they are a company. I always tended to believe company's could get parts at a lower price then available on market or is it just me?

Like I said, Nintendo would get it for cheaper. But Nintendo will charge these prices to us to markup the cost and pass it to us. Markup is usually about 20%. So 80% of $450 is around $350 to make a wii u and tablet. Nintendo always sells consoles at a profit so you won't see a wii u sold for less than $400

#47175 Good day good sirs and madams (and anything in between)

Posted by 10k on 12 December 2011 - 06:40 PM in Introduction Central

My real name is Kevin, I am a huge gamer. I grew up with Nintendo but I also own all playstations and an Xbox 360.

I have owned all of Nintendo's handhelds and consoles (except the virtual boy).

My favorite game of all time is Ocarina of Time. I am a fan of most Nintendo first party games (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Star Fox, Fire Emblem, etc.)

I'm looking forward to chatting with you all and I am anticipating the Wii U like a little school girl.

BioWare. Great RPG's. Preordered Mass Effect 3 and The Old Republic already. I have played the two mass effects as much as ocarina of time (like dozens of times haha)

Definitely seeing my favorite gaming franchises in HD, a proper online network from Nintendo, and third party games not being skipped out on Nintendo (like mass effect, GTA, and assassins creed)

Posted by 10k on 13 December 2011 - 06:04 PM in Introduction Central

Unless ea releases mass effect 1 & 2 in the wii u at launch so I can start my own story and have my decisions mean something, I won't buy mass effect 3 for wii u lol.

Skyward sword was awesome but the lack of antialiasing was apparent in my 40" LCD. It also had the weakest music of all Zelda's in m opinion (can't remember any soundtracks except skylofts haha)

#47392 what do you want the Wii U to be????

Posted by 10k on 13 December 2011 - 06:26 PM in Wii U Hardware

There was so many BS rumors pre e3. It would just be called "The Nintendo", it would look like a wii classic controller with a small multitouch touchscreen, etc. the only game changer I can see is Nintendo's online infrastructure

#47394 Your favorite game that no one plays

Posted by 10k on 13 December 2011 - 06:35 PM in General Gaming

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the Game Cube. Great game play, great music, great bosses, great fun, especially with 4 people .

Are you kidding me? I thought only my friends played that! Gauntlet Legends for the N64 was epic too! 4 player FTW!

My game is Legend of Dragoon for the PS1

#47524 what do you want the Wii U to be????

Posted by 10k on 14 December 2011 - 06:31 PM in Wii U Hardware

true.... but i haven't tried to look up the source as it was so long ago. this particular unknown developers was spot on with the 6 inch tablet controller. so it gives him a little validity on rumors and the rumor that there was one last big game changing system selling feature nintendo didn't (and he predicted) wouldn't announce at e32011. so im looking forward to if this is true what it could be.

I don't remember any developer saying the wii u had a huge selling feature that wasn't the controller itself. You must prove this for now I am curious and excited :)

Well aliasing is the jagged lines that are shown on edges around objects like characters or weapons. Without antialiasing, "Jaggies" are visible and the game starts to look ugly. Especially on bigger tv's, AA is needed. Even the HD consoles can only support 2x AA, sometimes 4x.

#47634 Wii U specs leaked?

Posted by 10k on 16 December 2011 - 07:01 AM in Wii U Hardware

People, people

eDRAM is a fancy way of saying "L3 cache" which the power7 processor can support a max of 4mb a core, which is 32mb maximum. The Wii u will not have more than 32mb of eDRAM. Its impossible.

The 1GB will be shared with the GPU ad CPU and the eDRAM will help with the wireless tablets and AntiAliasing.

1GB is twice that of the PS3 and that console can produce gorgeous games like uncharted 3. Just imagine what twice the ram could do?

#47641 graphics conversations(Wiiu not mentioned?)

Posted by 10k on 16 December 2011 - 01:39 PM in General Gaming

Developers like vigil games have already said graphics are starting to plateu, what they really want from next gen is more ram and processing. A quad cord with 32mb L3 cache a nd 1GB of Ddr3 ram shared between CPU and GPU will be fine to push 1080p native at 30fps and some games even 60fps.

#48072 Nintendo's Marketing Strategy

Posted by 10k on 19 December 2011 - 04:41 PM in General Gaming

Nintendo said when they made the Wii they weren't targeting the casual gamer. They thought the innovative motion controls would convince developers to make some awesome hardcore games. However thid parties chose to abandon the console or make shovelware for It and the wii was branded as a casual console from there on.

All of Nintendo's consoles have always had the goal of aiming towards the largest possible gaming audience with a balance of hardcore and casual and all age groups. The Wii was not supposed it be a casual gamer and Nintendo never meant to abandon hardcore gamers. That's why all the first party games from Nintendo were high quality titles that hardcore gamers loved.

#48121 What Consoles do you have?

I think Nintendo will go with $349.99 US. I can't see them charging more than $400 and really, after buying the console and then at least 1 game to go with it, you are spending $400ish

#48765 Wii U specs leaked?

Posted by 10k on 22 December 2011 - 12:11 PM in Wii U Hardware

So to sum up:

IBM Power7 based CPU with unknown clock speed, but for sure quad-core
An AMD GPU based off of RV770 architecture (which is a radeon 4830 or something) that can support only directx 10.1 and is 40nm
Six channel audio with support up to 6.1 surround sound
8gb of internal memory, external HDD and USB's are supported
Unknown RAM (rumored to be a GB shared between CPU and GPU which is 2x that of the Xbox/Playstation)
"lots of eDRAM" says IBM, the maximum it can support is 32MB

Off the shelf parts that are close to these rumors?

CPU - 3.0GHz Quad Core with hyper threading and 32MB of eDRAM (a.k.a. L3 cache, which Xbox only has 10) (Nintendo will want to keep cost and heat down, so clocking it below 3.2 is recommended. Keep in mind that even though Xbox is clocked at 3.2 it only has 3 cores. The extra core at 3.0 makes the Wii U processor much faster)

GPU - Radeon 4870 256 mbit GDDR5 Memory (it was manufactured at 55nm, but now that it's round 3.5 years old Nintendo will get it customized at 40nm to make it smaller and create less heat)

RAM - 1GB DDR3 Shared between CPU and GPU

The rest will be motherboard stuff and ports, etc.

#48787 Wii U specs leaked?

MorbidGod: As I said early IBM saying it used watson tech could of meant any number of things and it certainly doesn't limit it to a Power7 core.

Tenkay23: Your parts are far too powerful. A quadcore P7 chip consumes 100watts, as does a 4870 on 40nm(better known as a 5770). That's 200watts JUST from two chips, while the whole Wii used ~18watts.

Yes buy HD consoles consume 200-300 watts and this thing has to run native 1080p and support streaming to two wii u tablets.

#48792 Wii U sales wont go so well?

Posted by 10k on 22 December 2011 - 03:55 PM in Wii U Hardware

Here is me looking into my crystal ball:

Sony and Microsoft fanboys will say the console was a failure of it doesn't sell near the 90 million units the original wii sold. Even though roughly 60% of wii sales was from the casual gamer. The Wii U will sell maybe 40% of that, as some casuals will convert to hardcore while other casuals might see the Wii U as the newest fad.

With the recession and all, and the next gen being more about innovation and control schemes and less about graphics, I estimate the Wii U will sell at minimum 25 million, at best 40 million. 40 million in this generation would be last place by far, but I honestly think Nintendo will finish third again if they aim for the hardcore. The GameCube was catered to the hardcore and tried to compete in graphics and got roflstomped. But, the Wii U is promising to have third party support and at least HD visuals too not lag behind the other two consoles too much.

We also got to take into account that from 2005-2008 (360 launch and up to the recession) people were willing to pay for anything. People had no issue paying $600 for a launch PS3 and this skews the sales results. The real question is how have these systems sold in the recession, and who will want to spend the money on a new gaming console? Will people just go for the cheapest? (which will be the Wii U), or will The economy get better and people will pay ridiculous prices for the next Xbox or Playstation?

I can guarantee this, all 3 consoles won't be getting over 50 million units sold next generation, not if they launch their consoles higher than $450. My prediction?

Wii U - 38 million units sold worldwide
Xbox Next - 46 million units sold worldwide
PS4 - 50 million units worldwide

#48878 What color/decoration would you want on your wii u?

Posted by 10k on 23 December 2011 - 04:43 AM in Wii U Hardware

A golden Zelda themed Wii U would be epic. But more realistically I want all black. The black wii looked so awesome especially when the blue disc slot was illuminated. Even the red one was good too, for the super Mario 25th anniversary. Just anything but white, white looks so cheap and shows dirt. But Nintendo won't want to abandon the white because its one of wii's trademarks

#49189 Wii U is supposedly "NOT" next gen

Posted by 10k on 25 December 2011 - 06:25 PM in Wii U Hardware

Everyone who knows technology and business knows the next Xbox and ps4 will be more powerful than the wii u. Nintendo is a gaming company only and is worth about $20 billion USD.

Microsoft is a software company that is worth over $80 billion USD from selling operating systems (Windows), Microsoft office, and even the programs that video game developers use (C++, C#).

Sony is worth around $30 billion USD from selling TV's, Radio's, Sound Systems, and the highly successful PS1 and PS2.

This means that companies like Microsoft and Sony can release high powered consoles at a loss for the first few years because th ey h ave other branches of business to sustain them. Nintendo has to make a profit on each console sold from launch or close to launch (max one year) or they lose too much money to be sustainable.

However, sony of Japan president said the PS4 will focus more on new control systems and innovative gameplay over huge graphics leaps. So the distance between the consoles power won't be much. Its the recession now, nobody will be stupid enough to launch a console at $500+
