#318150 A Late-Night Stream of Consciousness

Posted by Tom on 13 February 2019 - 08:24 PM

Good morning, everyone!

It is currently 9:52 10:15 10:37 PM. I've got work in the morning.

Regardless, something drew me here. Something compelled me to log in, post a status update and make this very topic. Probably nostalgia.

Definitely nostalgia.

The Wii U is almost 7 years old. That's the age of the average first-grader in the US. I feel like it didn't necessarily flop, though it didn't fare too well compared to the Xbox One and the PS4.

I still have my Wii U. It's kinda collecting dust nowadays. I still have the Animal Crossing Plaza, though the service has long since been discontinued.

I'm still kinda bummed that a proper Animal Crossing title wasn't released on the Wii U.

At some point I got my hands on a Switch, but nowadays I don't have enough free time to sit down and enjoy the titles.

At the time of writing, Nintendo confirmed a mainline Animal Crossing title coming out on the Switch this year. I'm looking forward to that.

I never considered myself to be a prolific member. I wished people happy birthdays and shared positive opinions on things. I acquainted myself with the kind members here and have forgotten to make contact with people.

Oh man, it's been everyone's birthday.

I finally graduated from college with a BS in Computer Science. It turns out that I find programming to be very dull.

I've been building a lot of computers in the meantime. I find that to be pretty fun, at least.

I might just go back and get an art degree.

My degree did, however, land me a nice job that has nothing to do with programming.

I've been learning video editing on the side as a hobby. I want to use what I learned in order to make a video on the history of WUF. I'm by no means an OG member, and it's going to require me to do a whole lotta reading on topics made before I even joined the forum. But I think it would be a fun undertaking.

The target demographic might be a little niche.

I'd like to make it and have it published on the 7th anniversary of the Wii U's US release.

---

It's kinda weird seeing that I'm the only soul on this website right now, at this time. A few guests, though I suspect all of them to be web crawlers.

It's wild to think of all the fun conversations that were had on this website. A whole lotta years have gone by since this website was considered totally dead, and I can't even imagine where everyone has gone and what fun exploits they've achieved in life since then.

I've kinda disappeared of the face of the Earth. I don't use any social media, nor have I been active in any other communities. It sometimes feels like I'm getting a little too old or too jaded to be participating in gaming communities. I've been wanting to do Twitch streams, but my anxiety has stopped me short of hitting the "start streaming" button in OBS.

I've experienced quite a few rough patches in my life. Despite that, my signature holds true.

I'm kinda drunk. I love you guys. My Discord is Tom Pls#2986.

#318027 Keeping the forum going

Posted by Waller on 30 April 2016 - 03:25 PM

I'm 90% sure the only reason Feld0 keeps this site still running is because of the ad revenue.

Usually, forums only make enough ad revenue to sustain themselves, and that's when they have a decently large active userbase. MLPForums is much more active than this site has ever been, and yet Feld0 has to rely on user donations to actually maintain the damn thing because the ad revenue just can't keep up with the costs of the website.

I'm certain the only reason the site is still up is because Feld0 is too attached to actually to take it down. And because it's being maintained by MLPForums donations.

#195696 Removal of the Chat

Posted by Xiombarg on 16 April 2013 - 05:30 PM

With the recent expiration of the IP chat service, Feld0 and I have reached a decision on the fate of the chat.  I'm sorry to say, but we have decided to discontinue the chat.

Let me make it clear why we chose to do so, the chat was not helping the forum community and has slowly devolved over time.  Despite what the chat used to be in the past, it became a place to spam, questionable content, and a hotbed of drama (with various issues that leaked onto the forums themselves).  There was no one member that did this, it is the nature of a real time chat.  In a real time chat, users are less likely to act decent towards other users, whether it be because of the moderation difficulties or because they simply cannot control themselves.  There were no other real options possible to "save" the chat, the chat itself was incredibly difficult to moderate, even with administrative permissions.

The purpose and goal of this site is to be a great forum and community for discussing the WiiU and Nintendo, but unfortunately the chat has put a tremendous strain on the community.  Without the chat, we can focus more on strengthening the community and making it the best we can.

#189807 Chatbanned

Posted by Xiombarg on 03 April 2013 - 02:14 PM

It appears I am chatbanned for advertising which is legitimate but garbage at the same time. another didnt get banned for promoting his XAT which goes to show how biased the rules here are. When is my ban up and why didnt the other advertiser get banned.

The other user didn't get banned because he contacted me for permission to advertise his site once or twice (As far as I could check, he didn't advertise in the chat).  I deleted two of your advertisements because you didn't contact an admin, and past that, I was told that you were already warned about it by anther user.

I've given you plenty of chances, Saturn, more chances than the typical user here...  I am a person hesitant to give out punishments, but I can only give so many chances before I can take action or lose the reason why I am a mod/admin.

#188644 Double Standard

Posted by Xiombarg on 31 March 2013 - 12:32 PM

Mourn is clearly power tripping

And to address this topic, I do not have permission to change the chat rules, I had to contact several people while I was writing them up before sending them to feldo.  I feel as if they are fair rules.

First and foremost, this site is about the WiiU.  This site is meant to be family friendly and users who are under the age of 18, should not be coming across posts regarding porn or posts regarding sexual activity.

With the most recent incidents in chat, it has become apparent that there are major issues caused in chat and it shouldn't be just a place where obscene conversations should take place or a place for users to troll other users.  Many situations have risen up where specific users have been targeting other users due to their sexual preferences or the way they act.  The chat has changed from harmless conversations about regular things and gaming, into a hotbed of drama, spam, and trolling.  I wanted to do my best to keep chat alive for as long as I can, as it won't stick around for forever.

#186152 Why the site will probably be dead within a year

Posted by PyroKinesis on 25 March 2013 - 10:26 AM

My goodness, what happened here while I took a couple months off?

Anyway, if there is any reason why the site will be dead in a year, it's threads like these. Not the members.

#183733 A call to friendship in the chat

Posted by Xiombarg on 17 March 2013 - 05:28 PM

Saturn, this isn't how you solve things.  You don't make a thread announcing it, or bring up things about you that you want to stop.  This is how you end up creating drama and nonsense.

#181134 A call to maturity in the chatroom

Posted by Mitch on 10 March 2013 - 12:39 AM

IF I TYPE LIKE THIS, PEOPLE WILL VALUE MY OPINION MORE AND THINK MY POST IS MORE SMARTERER

:P

He already said we were gonna get a chance to prove ourselves that we are a responsible community that deserves a chat. Its a simple fix to a simple problem, follow the rules of the forum in the chatroom, we dont need more mods and rules and regulations watching over us in the chat, because we are big boys (and girls) with big boy pants and we can act our age.... but if we cant act our age then we will all have to pay the price and lose the chat

#177529 Reasons why this forum is imploding

Posted by routerbad on 28 February 2013 - 11:47 AM

I just joined today and this is one of the first threads I saw.

It is really discouraging to see that this thread even exists. I personally know very few people with a Wii U, so I came here hoping to find like-minded people who I could discuss Wii carp with. I tentatively join a community I know nothing about, and this is what I see. That does not make me want to become an active member.

The key to fostering any web community is growth. A community that doesn't change is a community that stagnates. A stagnant community is a community with nothing to talk about.

This is an important discussion to have; when you love a community you don't want it to 'implode', but having this carp on the front page is not a good way to welcome members, ergo not a good way to prevent implosion.

The simple fact that the members of this community are open and honest enough with each other to create and discuss the community itself within a thread like this should provide a little more of a positive outlook on the community as a whole.  If I made a thread like this at Neowin or any of the other forums that I used to frequent it would have been closed on the basis of QQ no mod wants to hear it, you would never see four or more pages of responses.  Here we have been able to bring our concerns to each other and discuss them openly is a good thing going forward.  I only joined a few months ago and this is actually, despite it being sort of a small community still, my favorite forum.  Sure the very nature of the site invites the occasional troll and there are a few members that are fanboys and others that are pessimists, but you start to figure other people on the site out a little and learn how to read their posts and it works out.

I'm sorry this thread gave you a bad first impression of the site or the community but I hope you can take it on the positive side and recognize that pretty much every active member of this community wants the site to grow, thrive, and be better than it is today, and there is definitely something to be said about that.

EDIT:  BTW sorry for saying community so much lol..... community, ok I'm done.

#175706 Reasons why this forum is imploding

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 24 February 2013 - 06:05 PM

Hi, I'm Auzzie Wingman. I've been here on the Wii U Forums for a long time.

I'm not one of the most respected, I'm not one of the elite, I'm in no way saying I have a level of superiority above anyone. I am human and prone to error. I tend to care for every individual on this site, and for the site itself. So how about a little story time before I absolutely tear everything to pieces.

When I first joined, this site was quite literally a halcyon of the internet. Now, for those who don't know, a halcyon is period of utter serene peace, or something to that effect. The arguments were naught, the place wasn't spammed. "On the Wii U Forums? NO WAY!" Well yes, it is true. Such a thing existed here.... until Victorious V and nl had the first ever biache fight in the chat room. Mind you, such biaching was really tame to half the stuff that happens now.

And now, for the reasons that brought you here. My perspective on why things are DYING.

* Staff - It's a bit hard not to start with the staff. Of the six staff that can actually do something, only 3 of them are actually active. Mournblade is working his ass off for the most part, and Andy and Joshua tend to be on when he isn't. At least for the most part there is moderators around the clock. The problem is that there aren't active admins. I managed to send Feld0 and email today, and that's why he appeared today. AMAC and Crackkat have just disappeared off the face of the forums altogether.

We need a more dedicated administrator in the event that Feld0 can't acquire AMAC's services anymore. The same goes for the fourth moderator position if he can't get Crackkat.

* Threads - Yeah, threads. There are a number of problems going on with threads. First off, spam threads. We don't have a section for spam threads, so don't make them. And you wonder why people are calling this site crap. Didn't happen back in the day when quality existed, why did it ever happen. Then you've got Zinix's threads. I'm all for news, but there's also this thing called taste, and Zinix, I can tell you are purposely posting news that no one truly wants to hear. Anything that sounds immoral or destructive, you feel you need to post NO YOU DON'T STOP IT. Repeat threads. I think everyone needs to get over them. It's proven that search can be iffy and even more people don't know it exists. Merge whenever it gets found and never speak of it again, stop complaining about doubles. Do what Hunter did yesterday.

On another note, there really hasn't been enough meaningful topics out there. If you have an idea on how you can get a fulfilling discussion going, then post it. I'm more than ready to talk, practically everyone who uses the C3 is ready to discuss, heck, the people migrating from 3DSF lately more than likely have something constructive to say from where I'm sitting. I mean just look at 3Dude. 3DSF migrant who's been making great to hear news threads about the Wii U.

* Posts - First off, be constructive. Positive or negative, try to post things that actually make sense. No spam, no complete hatewagons. It's silly and degrading to everything, so don't troll. Also, cut the fanboyism. Saturn, this one is mostly to you. No need to be "Blame microsoft" or however it is that you do it. This might've been before you joined, but there is actually a strict "No bashing" policy on this forum. This also goes to several other members who have been invading the Hardware section and complaining "it's about the games, eff specs talk".

* Members - This is the big one. It involves all of you, no exceptions, not even Feld0, not even Epic Kirby, not even Hari nor Noonabites. EVERYONE. This is a public zone. You can hide behind your monitors but it's no different from being in school or a convention talking on stage. You can be yourself, but there are expectations of you from everyone else. If you feel that you aren't meeting those expectations, then perhaps you should show restraint. By expectations, people expect you to be polite. If you're gonna be aggressive then give a good reason to be aggressive. Don't troll others opinions and understand they aren't you, they might get it and they might not. If you feel offended, then let people know, they can't be expected to know if you don't say something. Stop working around behind each other's backs godamnit.

* Be part of the community - Say hi to people in introduction threads, jump into chat when you can, go into threads you don't usually go to, have fun in the forum games and roleplay section, put up a status update, change your profile every once in a while, discuss, post, be bothered. Simple.

Okay whatever. You've pissed me off. This is what you get.

#166366 Forum Request : Liking status updates

Posted by Waller on 03 February 2013 - 11:18 AM

Im pretty sure this is a topic that's been adresses before. We used to be able to do it for a short while, but Feld0 scratched the system because it was riddled with bugs. We won't get them back.

On the subject of the like system, I have no problems with it. I prefer by to see a post with 70 likes than see a thread derailed by "this/+1/took it right out of my mouth" posts. It's happened before.

Also, saying it's the system's fault that some people abuse it is one of the stupidest things I've read in a while. It's equivalent to saying that matches should be banned because some people have started fires.

Edit: Lol, fail at not noticing Nollog basically said the same thing with one sentence.

#133206 NSMBU: The Best Mario Game Since Mario World?

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 19 November 2012 - 05:23 AM

I also have two substantial facts for why I said what I said.

1) Basically everyone I've asked how they found Super Mario Galaxy 2 has said it's platforming perfection.
2) Gamerankings has both Galaxies in it's top three rated games of all time, the first being the first game which recently eclipsed Ocarina of Time for that spot. You simply do not do that with a craptasm.

Also, those SMG soundtracks. OH GOD DAMN!

#130963 What the deal with Wii U Go?

Posted by AMAC on 16 November 2012 - 02:20 PM

I don't know what the latest on Wii U Go is, but it's owned by Feld0 while Wii U Blog is run by David Turnbull, so the sites aren't actually connected. It's just that both sites are linked to this forum.

#129019 The Forums Need Updating, Wii U Is Out Soon

Posted by Kiki Neko-Chan on 13 November 2012 - 09:20 PM

I hope Feld0 sees this. He needs to upgrade the site.

Believe me, he's probably seen a gazillion of these.

#98877 Side Project - Wii U Forums New Design

Posted by Lord Pickleton on 10 August 2012 - 11:00 PM

Hey guys today I decided to make a design for our beloved Forum for fun. I tried to keep it nice and simple in design. If you may have noticed I added a big spot to feature Wii U games because I think it's nice for people to find out about new games, and also be a little different every time. It's still a WIP and I'll be changing some things and adding some themed icons tomorrow where you see the empty spaces next to the Sections. Example: "Wii U Hardware" will have the Wii U console as an icon and "Wii U Games" will have the Gamepad as an icon. Maybe if I spend more than a day on it I can make it look nicer.

Tell me what you guys think about the design and what you think I should change. Don't take this too serious I did this for fun and practice.
