#91883 Wii U GPU specs confirmed

Posted by Socalmuscle on 04 July 2012 - 02:54 PM

Just a rehash of the same rumor that was out right before E3.

#91332 Wii U Has “Capability Issues” Due To Single Processor

Posted by Socalmuscle on 02 July 2012 - 03:37 PM

[a]list: With Nintendo, where do you think they came up short in the way they showed the Wii U?
Dean Takahashi: They have a major issue with the capability of the Wii U console where it has a single processor but it has to drive multiple displays. A single graphics chip inside the console has to drive the big screen, the main game screen, but it also has to provide the imagery for the tablet controller, the game pad. And yet the system itself isn’t that powerful. Nintendo only showed games with one game pad controller and the TV. Most games out there, if you’re in a social setting, you want two controllers. Nintendo didn’t show any games that do that. They admitted in a Q&A that the games are going to run slower if you have two game pads and playing on a main display. That’s a fairly big issue for them. They made a good case that you can play with one controller and multiple Wii controllers, what they call asymmetric gaming where one person is looking at the small tablet screen and trying to deploy zombies while the people playing with the controllers were all on the main screen. You come up with very creative, different kinds of games where it’s one against four, or one person going online. They tried to justify and turn into an advantage this major weakness of the Wii U, but I think a lot of people saw this as a weakness. The games themselves were creative. They tried to do something like Wii Sports with NintendoLand, which has mini-games in it that explore the capabilities of the tablet and the touch screen. But there wasn’t an obvious blockbuster within those games. They may have had a good one in ZombieU, but in the demos it didn’t necessarily play that well. Nintendo came up as a pretty big disappointment at E3.

The ATI chip has built in ATI tech for driving multiple displays.  Kind of irresponsible for this guy to downplay it to investors of all people.

Also, he notes that the machine isn't that powerful.  He is unfortunately incorrect and he also has no idea what's in the system. Irresponsibility strikes again.

He is right that two gamepads take up more resources (duh) and will cause a performance hit.  Your game console driving 3 screens? Yeah, that's not a shock. You will be able to use two gamepads.  But in the most graphically demanding and impressively visual games, you may not even use the gamepad screen for much beyond menu item selection.  that would be normal, OK, and a perfectly acceptable use of the gamepad while showcasing the systems graphics chops.

If having only one tablet controller working is a weakness, then what would he call systems that have ZERO? Again, asinine logic here.

Yet, Nintendo has revamped the console to utilize two gamepads.

Nintendo needed a killer app at E3.  they did not deliver.  I think they sensed that their AAA titles wouldn't be in show form and the major third party games wouldn't be either.  so they went the tried and true Zombie route.  Zombies sell and a zombie game is an easy showcase.  So Ubisoft trashed Killer Freaks and cobbled together a zombie game from its remains.  It's no wonder the game was merely very good looking at E3.

In the end, this individual is jumping the gun and doing so from the wrong end.  he has zero facts to offer, zero insight as to the systems potential, and a skewed view on what pros and cons are.

It's his career, so he can do what he wants and deal with the consequences.

Interestingly, some known studios who last year were merely happy with the system have become very excited right before E3, lauding the systems power, graphical capabilities, processor, etc.

Ignore the anti-nintendo sentiment.  especially when it comes from someone who has zero info other than what he googled one day over coffee, then got paid to write about it.

It was the same way with the Gamecube, which was a tour de force graphically. So many were calling it the kiddy console, noting the GPU having less transistors, and predicting less powerful graphics.  When it came out, it not only stomped the PS2 power wise, it at least held its own against Microsofts fabled Xbox.  Media sway is a dirty game.  Don't play it.

The Wii U is a powerful, next generation console that is easy to make great and graphically impressive games on.  It far exceeds the current consoles in specs and is worthy of the "next generation" tag. we should all enjoy it when it comes out.

#90790 Tons of new Wii U info - Nintendo Network, Achievements, Virtual Console, etc

Posted by Socalmuscle on 29 June 2012 - 11:34 AM

I think it's wise of Nintendo to ban FB and Twitter (both of which I use constantly).

1) It keeps those companies' prying, spying tactics off of Nintendos consoles. FB and Twitter apps are highly invasive.

2) It will help keep the system focused. Something everyone else seems to forget about.  MiiVerse is the standard. U-Verse would have been a better name, but I imagine AT&T would take issue with that. LOL

3) MiiVerse actually seems, dare I say it, "better" than FB or Twitter, despite its game centered focus and ability to use the GamePad in any way Nintendo can think up.  And they are good at thinking things up.

I imagine FB and Twitter will both be available down the line, after MiiVerse gets entrenched.

#88356 So, Uh- I think I might want a PS4? [Wii U Hardware stuff]

Posted by Socalmuscle on 18 June 2012 - 01:12 AM

UR SOOO wrong again, 2 years ago, maybe 3, didnt count them.. Apple stopped TOTALLY supporting NVIDIA, thats why all photographers and 3d moved to PC... videographers only buy pros, or those who want to advertise the apple in their shop.. ENTER any eshop from apple and try buy a pro or casual.. with nvidia..  U see? u know the past.. not the present or feature of apple .. and I see dark skys upon them. And I am honest, APPLE has the worst customer service every invented in human history... I can give u stories and articles, even newspapers..

Nvidia due to some conflicts with INTEL cpus, that apple uses in their machines... stopped cooping with APPLE, or APPLE stopped cooping with nvidia because of that, vise verse.  So cuda no more... even though, this year ADOBE photoshop cs6 (i think?) supports amd gpus.. but all photographers who got older version of photoshop, they have NO reason of buying new version of pp.. it is expensive after all. And I dont speak about the other applications that amd drivers sucks... for 3d... against quadro.

with this programs, if u buy version 2 or 3 or 4... u dont need to change for at least 10-15 years... lol... if ur job is done.. So apple now points to the new comers.. not the current photographers, etc. And not in 3d. And at this point, pcs are by far superior than pros.. And u have versatile customer service, u choose... I forgot to tell u that I am a photographer.. did I ever say that ? no.. i didnt

Actually, I'm right. You're wrong.

Apple did forgo nvidia for a time due to some unstable legal ground intel was trying to kill nvidia sales with related to inclusion in intel motherboards. And of course, apple reserves the right to use whichever gpu offers the best performance for its apication as well. Nvidia and Ati are fighting a seesaw battle there.

A d guess what?... Apples using nvidia again... As in you can by a brand new laptop with nvidia gpu.

So i guess that's that.  Seriously. Update your facts before saying someone is wrong and having egg on your face.

You just sound trolling with these comments. If you kept up on the industry, you would keep up on apple too. And at their wwdc your have noticed their nvidia announcements. But I suppose facts escape you when you are only looking to spout negativity, regardless of its basis in fiction.

#85813 Wiiu Cpu just as powerful as the ps3-360 and its Gpu 1.5 x stronger? (Please no)

Posted by Socalmuscle on 08 June 2012 - 12:58 PM

This rumor is ...

B
S

just thought you should know.

The Wii U is a beast of a console.

It's not "PS3 1.5" or whatever.

It's a bit of a monster actually.

The CPU and GPU are both extremely powerful.

What Nintendo and Ubisoft showed at E3 were games that started life and continued much in development on the first dev kits, which were not as powerful as the final hardware list. Third party games that were also on lesser consoles were not even really revamped graphically.  Batman did add some polys at the minimum, but used the exact same textures as the 360.  At 1080P, it will look a bit worse actually.  The real work Rocksteady did was simply utilizing the controller (which was actually very interesting and looks like a ton of fun).

And the Wii U still isn't ready for manufacturing.

#82681 Developer: “We Won’t Be Working On Wii U Due To Its Complexities”

Posted by Socalmuscle on 01 June 2012 - 08:36 PM

These "developers" have never touched a wii u.

Nor have they worked on the "720" or "ps4"

More corporate sabotage. Lol

It's so obvious nowadays.

Everyone knows how to program for PowerPC nowadays.

Power 7 keeps things easy with out of order execution, easy compiling, and 4 simultaneous threads per core.

Then you have worlds more ram. And the amount of freedom that provides is no light matter.

Add to that the gpu, which is derived from a familiar architecture, and you have basically a recipe for great tankents to make amazing games and even less talented folks to be able to turn out beautiful games quickly like it was a walk in the park.

The only real work involved is more time spent on models of much greater geometry, and the extra time in creating proper high resolution textures.

At this point, it's not the programming complexity as it is the "elbow grease" required to use all the new power. Wii u games will be more expensive to make.

#82608 WiiU CPU Revealed by Patent: "Enhanced PowerPC 750" ?

Posted by Socalmuscle on 01 June 2012 - 05:11 PM

POWER7 hasn't been around but the power brand has.

Exactly the point.

the 360 uses Power 5 at its core.  The GCN uses a different version of the "PowerPC" family.

The wii U uses the newest and most powerful - Power 7.  The point being that the Power 7 is nothing like 4 Wii CPUs overclocked and linked together...

#82384 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by Socalmuscle on 01 June 2012 - 01:06 AM

Many people I know of would much rather pay more for a more capable console that will be enjoyed for 6 years or so. You get what you pay for. The wii launched at $250 and it was largely a GameCube but with gyros added. By then, GameCube was $49. So clearly, Nintendo rolled in the cash.

$450 would be a sweet spot for the wii u.

But Nintendo is obsessed with price.

I imagine they are shooting for $350-$399.

$450 for a new console with the power of wii u and that revolutionary controller is a good deal.

#81658 Wii u is apparently not supported by unreal engine 4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 29 May 2012 - 02:45 PM

^ and you know that how...?

It was open common knowledge. There was even a couple of pictures showing the powermacs behind the scenes and not hidden all that well.

Here are some old source links...

http://news.cnet.com/2100-1043-5706658.html

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/Power_Mac_G5s_run_Microsofts_XBox_360_Demos_at_E3/

Time travel indeed.  All the way back from 2005.

Wii U news is a real roller coaster ride, expectations go up then down, then up etc.

I still think it will be in the region of 2x more powerful than current gen, more memory, similar cpu, possibly less gpu in polygon and texturing so will do current gen software a bit better and versions of next gen ps4/xbox 720 titles will be simplified and cut down to work on wii U.

Now that the Metro last light or whatever its called isn't being developed on wii u and unreal 3 will be used for wii U games not unreal 4 it seems like expectations are on a downer but must admit when there was talk of the final V5 development kits and possible performance increases to make Unreal 4 possible I was feeling like Nintendo had listened and upped the spec a bit but now it seems like that is unlikely.

That said though the easiest way to upgrade a console at the last moment is a bit more memory. Just bolt on a bit more. Doesn't require a radical overhaul like messing with the gpu and cpu would. So maybe that was the upgrade 0.5meg extra memory to 1.5GB in total.

My advice is set your expectations incredibly low and you can only be pleasently surprised with whatever spec or details are announced. Expect something that is in the region of 5x 360/PS3 performance and you are heading for disappointment.

I really think Nintendo are more interested in hitting the right price than a high spec.

Epic never said unreal 4 wasn't for wii u.

They said they haven't announced their plans yet.

And they haven't.

Also, unreal engine 4 isn't done cooking in the oven.

#81088 Gearbox - Wii U is a 'powerful, powerful machine'

Posted by Socalmuscle on 27 May 2012 - 11:03 AM

gearbox: Wii you will provide an alternate reality you will be teleported in, while simultaneously giving you surgery to see at an eagles quality
it will shoot rainbows out of its fans and spray glitter
it will be able to fight off the burgler in your house with a cheat code

-what I think of gearbox's constant praise, it is yet to be discovered if their hype has reason behind it

It hasn't been constant praise.

Actually, they e switched stances.

They used to look negatively at wii u calling it a bridge between current and next gen.

Now they are effusively lauding the power and calling it a true next gen console.

Most likely this is true. And then they will wait for a new PS/Xbox, only to discover it is just a tad more powerful.

This.

#80558 Wii U HD Experience Demo Screencaps Compilation

Posted by Socalmuscle on 24 May 2012 - 09:53 PM

The Zelda tech demo looks sick, but the bird demo looks a little bit like a PS3 game...

Off topic for Sony haters
Seriously, what does everyone has against Sony? It's just lies. Both Sony and Microsoft is not kind against Nintendo because they are competitors. I know that Sony copies some ideas from Nintendo. But so does Microsoft and Nintendo. Nintendo copied the AR thing from Sony. Now they are going to "copy" the idea of a strong console with a good online experience i.e Microsoft's idea of their console.

Rememberer about the Nintendo Playstation also:
http://en.wikipedia....ndo_PlayStation

The industry works this way, people taking inspiration from each other. People betraying and so on. It all has a goal, to earn money.

Also a XBOX 360 with live in a few years (assuming you get a console made for online to play online) costs more than a PS3 and a Wii

The reason Sony is thought of as evil is something they brought upon themselves - by being evil.

They stole the play station tech from Nintendo, who designed much of it. Sony was supplying the optical drive and engineering which Nintendo knew little of. Nintendo decided to not bring an add on to the snes and Sony saw a legal loophole through which they could take Nintendo technology as their own.

Nintendo came out with a vastly superior console in the n64. But it had a handicap. Storage. Cartridges were over at this point and Sony got a leg up through that. Some of it was dumb decision making by Nintendo and some was Sony being evil.

Sony also strong armed retailers who were selling dream cast. They wouldn't give them ps2 systems until they stopped selling dream cast. Evil.

Nintendo invents idea of powerful console with snes (and failed play station add on)
Sony copies (or steals...)

Nintendo invest analog sticks.
Sony copies.

Nintendo invents the rumble pack.
Sony copies.

Nintendo invents motion controls.
Sony copies.

Etc. etc.

It's not rocket science.
Sony didn't get it's rep by mistake. Your actions do follow you. Sony has earned a reputation. Now they have to live with it. Facts are facts. Calling it "hate" is a cop out.

Nintendo has a history of innovation.
If they happen to increase their online gaming. That isn't copying. And ms didn't invent the Internet, online gaming, online shopping, purchasing music, movies, etc.

So Nintendo isn't copying there.
Microsoft did copy the Mii thing.

Let's get real here snes give credit where it's due.

Nintendo has endured lean seasons along with plenteous seasons just to stay true to their core values. Have to appreciate that.

And no way is some mega corp (that somehow has become financially much less so over the years) going to get the credit for brazenly stealing and benefitting from a Nintendo who was trying to branch out in the motion control arena.

Now, the field is level again. Nintendos packing futuristic next gen power, yet another console gaming innovation, and they deserve every console sale they make.

#80555 RUMOR: Wii U Gamer Card

Posted by Socalmuscle on 24 May 2012 - 09:22 PM

This would be great in Japan, and if Nintendo wanted it to be a hit in other Countries they should make a app for phones.

This.

In fact, that's all they should do instead of another device that you have to purchase that's not a Nintendo console.  Everyone has an iPhone or android. Nintendo can even make an app for the silliness that is windows phone.

Though some of the oldsters on the board might cause a fuss because they misunderstand and think it will aupport those platforms. In reality, those platforms are independent and Nintendo is simply using a cell phone (something everyone has already) to bolster their own experience.

I mean, Nintendo uses other manufacturers TVs to display thei experience from console, right,  do use other manufacturers phones to promo console features and sharing related to the console experience.
