Who here is 30+ y/o? It'd be cool to exchange IDs with some of the "old" gamers.

I dont know if these screens are representative or just tests.

But it appears to mostly keep the old geometry, redo textures, and modernize the lighting engine.

I dont think i like the way the new lighting engine makes the characters look. They look too.... 3d.

I didn't even know there was a gold edition. That being said, I do have this:

For all us "old fogies" out there... I'm super stoked to see this announcement. I kept my Wii because it has GC support and still have ALL my GC games just in case I feel like playing again. I remember picking up my GC on launch night at Walmart *shudder* back in my final college days. So this is very exciting to me. To me this also begs the question: Will there be more re-releases of GC games?... Even if they are straight ports without HD updates. Very excited and felt 10 years younger when I saw this announcement!

Mario Kart, yes it's a karting game but still.

Wait a second, I like myself some Mario Kart, but I like sim racing in GT5 as well. Let's be fair, Mario Kart and GT5 are very different games in a very broad racing category. Mario Kart would be a much better comparison to Mod Nation Racers or something than GT5.

And hey, don't forget... there are plenty on eBay. Haha. I don't know why anybody is even bothering to sell there now. Plenty of people are even lucky to break after ebay, paypal, and shipping fees. The Wii frenzy this is not.

I've yet to encounter this freezing, but I won't hold my breath. As for the menus, it doesn't drive me crazy, however they are definitely noticeable and are a little annoying. I just really hope this can be sorted out via software optimization/patch.

With "core" gamers it could be tough. I'd consider myself a core gamer and to some extent wonder which games I should get for Wii U vs PS3, however, I'm willing to give the Wii U version of a game a chance unless the port was done completely half-arsed rendering it a complete waste of money. The way I see it: Wii U for Nintendo exclusives and PS3 for PS3 exclusives. Everything else in between is a toss-up depending on how the game integrates with the console. Clearly we know PS3 does game patch updates and hopefully the same will be done for Wii U if necessary. I also like the Miiverse aspect of the Wii U for games as well. If Nintendo can tidy up the OS a little bit (menu lag and maybe make it a few less steps to bounce between certain menu options) I would have no problem using the U as my primary console. As for now, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and am leaning towards 3rd party purchases for U vs PS3 unless it's a very sloppy port.

I just had my 1st complete freeze since launch using Nintendo Land (specifically my 2nd attempt at the balloon fight). Hasn't happened *yet* in NSMB.

Well, 5 minutes after my first freeze, it froze again in Nintendo Land right away when I restarted the game and tried to play the coin pachinko game.

#124352 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

I'm in Southern California. I was under the impression that the Walmart layaway program for the Wii U had already ended.

#124441 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

Posted by naadofett on 04 November 2012 - 04:44 PM in Wii U Hardware

I take that back. The layaway ended on November 1st. I thought it went on until November 10th. My bad everyone. >.<

yeah, I do live in the US.

I thought this was the case, but your post gave me a sliver... a very small sliver... of hope that maybe I could put one on layaway. Unfortunately after just going to Walmart and navigating that hole I was denied. No big surprise there. Oh well.

It would appear that as I initially figured (and other posted), without a pre-order, you're basically hosed for launch day. I'm not about to pay somebody an insane amount of money on Craigslist, Amazon, or eBay. So I guess it's good that I at least got on a GameStop waiting list yesterday. The guy said there were about 24 people waiting for the deluxe model after preorders were taken care of. So who knows how long it'll take a single GameStop to receive another 30 or so units.

i have a little info on this.
if you didn't pre-order you have one shot to get a system before christmas.
all distribution companies took pre orders on promised shipments from august.
if  they received more stock since then it will be in the initial shipment for launch.
so get there and camp out on launch night because once they sell out that is it until the second roll out which has been set by the manufacturer as" no sooner than late december".
so yeah walmart should definitely have a few outside of pre-orders at launch but thats it.. and everyone will be wanting it and waiting in lines to get them.
the sad thing is i foresee another gouging event like wii's launch where every shipment that came in was bought up by e-bay lurkers with massive credit cards and sold for double the price.
*EDIT* this info pertains to north american markets only.

What's the source on this?

#124252 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

Posted by naadofett on 04 November 2012 - 09:51 AM in Wii U Hardware

I watched the Wii U announcement once I got off work that day and knew plenty well when pre-orders would start. At the time, even as a Nintendo fan, I wasn't sure if the Wii U was going to be right for me. I loved the Wii for quite a while and then, as with many others, it just started to collect dust. I was super excited leading up to the announcement, but then for whatever reason I lost a little interest. So time for pre-orders came and went and by the time I considered looking into it again and was not shocked to see everything sold out.

My budget for the coming couple of months has changed and so I'm looking at getting a Wii U again. I went into one of my local GameStops yesterday and ended up getting on a "waiting list" with $0 down and the list for the 32gb model is apparently ~24 deep, which doesn't account for those who pre-ordered. Then I found this forum and the mention of Target pre-order cards available as of about a week ago. I knew a week later the cards would probably be gone and at both Target stores where I live there were no pre-order cards available.  I didn't even bother with Best Buy or Walmart since I knew I'd have no luck there with pre-orders. I also went to my local Toys 'R' Us, but no luck there either. I expected all of this, but was hoping for a sliver of luck.

So, for those of us who didn't snag a pre-order... what are realistic options for launch day? I remember the days of the Wii in which I was able to wait in line more than once to get a Wii with friends and family, but it sounds like initial stock at stores will just be barely enough for presales. It sounds like there won't even be stock for those waiting in line. I know this is all my fault and I'm kicking myself for not pre-ordering, but it is what it is now. I just get a little concerned when the GameStop employee says (paraphrasing), "well, you will probably be able to get something by the end of January." Anybody have a finger on the pulse for launch day?

Isn't there more to regions than simply the video format (NTSC vs PAL)? I believe other places around the world are assigned region numbers. If you buy a console from another region that can't play games from a different region code, then you just wasted your money.

#124811 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

Posted by naadofett on 05 November 2012 - 05:16 PM in Wii U Hardware

I checked at my local Walmart and guess what... there's tons of per order cards!!! (which means no one pre-ordered) i can still pre-order! WOO!

You're lucky. My local Walmart didn't have squat yesterday. Nobody in my area has any open preorders left. So no launch day Wii U for me... and yes, I refuse to buy an overpriced unit on eBay or Craigslist. I can't help but wonder how many of the preordered units are going to be put up for sale on these other various sites at an insane premium. I'd find it amusing if people just decided not to buy the overpriced units just so the scalpers could feel the pain and have to sell at a more reasonable price, but who am I kidding? That will never happen...

Maybe your mom gets paid on the following Fiday, you know every 2 weeks and it happens black Friday is her payday. But I do feel places like Best Buy will have some on Black Friday, but you will have to be in line a week before just to make sure you get one as they will only have 3.

I was going to mention this as well. In my opinion, be happy your mom is going to get you one period ;) I remember when I was 8 and my brother and I had to BEG for a Nintendo and finally one year (around 1988 I think), one showed up under the Christmas tree. Talk about an amazing Christmas that was. Ok, I'm done with my "When I was a kid we didn't have..." commentary.

@The Walking Dead - Side note, tonight's episode was gnarly!

#150266 InterWorks Pro Controller U?

Posted by naadofett on 20 December 2012 - 07:57 PM in Wii U Hardware

I was real skeptical at first, but that video was pretty awesome. Bummer about the pre-order status, but I might order one or two anyway. I can always cancel if I change my mind. All I know is that's pretty sweet that you don't have to bust out the wiimote if you want to use your Wii stuff (at least nothing that requires full wiimote functionality anyway) and virtual console + being able to use it instead of the Wii U pro controller.

It being compatible with ALL Wii and Wii U games makes it a must have for me.
Im getting Mario Galaxy 2 for x-mas, I don't wanna have to use a nunchuk and wii mote... The wii U pro controller was a huge letdown for me as its not even compatible with the NSMBU game...

The only problem is that based on my experience with Mario Galaxy 1/2, I think it would probably just be easier to use the wiimote + nunchuck, BUT I could obviously wrong seeing as there are no impressions of a game like that with this new controller.

#133003 An honest letdown, but still hopeful

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 10:04 PM in Wii U Hardware

What I'm curious about is if the slowness in the menu system could be addressed by improvements in the software as opposed to being some sort of hardware limitation.

As far as the Wii emulator goes, yeah, that's kind of a bummer. However, I'm used to this because of the Wii's backwards compatibility with Gamecube games. It would definitely be more streamlined to not have to deal with this, but this doesn't make me crazy.

Well, I really hope that this doesn't take more than 90 minutes! I just started downloading the update 5 minutes ago before I even saw this thread!! On the plus side, I have the U plugged into via ethernet/USB adapter so the download speed should be quicker than using wifi.

#132626 IMPORTANT BEFORE UPDATING WITH DAY 1 UPDATE

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:28 PM in Wii U Hardware

Well, I was able to turn off the auto-off feature. The Nintendo network connection dropped about 30% of the way through so I just finished doing the initial configuration and disabled the auto-off feature before restarting the update. Then the Nintendo network crapped out again so now I'm on attempt #3. At least the download picks up where it left off.

#132644 IMPORTANT BEFORE UPDATING WITH DAY 1 UPDATE

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:35 PM in Wii U Hardware

Could you tell us how exactly you turn this feature off?

You go into the system settings "app" and along the bottom of your gamepad's screen you'll see various subcategories for options. One of them (around the middle I think) was the auto-off feature. Just select it and choose to disable it. I'd be more detailed, but I can't get at it right now since my update is downloading.... again...

Auto power-down was temporarily disabled during my update portion of the download.

You're right. I'm seeing that on my update screen now as well. Oh well, I guess it didn't hurt to disable it first.
