#4684 WiiU 's AMD GPU supports Eyefinity

Posted by Guest on 11 June 2011 - 10:57 PM in Wii U Hardware

This thread originally was about that the WiiU is likely to get a Radeon HD 5XXX, but if you guys want to derail this thread that badly, I will join in :DIs there some possibility that Nintendo could use some kind of short range W-LAN to connect additional WiiUMotes? This "U-LAN" would be WiiUMote-only, another W-LAN device wouldn't be accepted by the console. The controller is able to play games without the console, so it should be able to have some kind of config screen where you can see all U-LAN networks nearby and join once you're approved of by the console. The controller that is shipped with the WiiU uses "his" WiiU as a standard connection, so it will join there automatically without having to be approved of.W-LAN is a very fast kind of connection, so there most likely won't be any bandwith issues. Do you think this is possible?

#4709 WiiU 's AMD GPU supports Eyefinity

Posted by Guest on 12 June 2011 - 05:43 AM in Wii U Hardware

Doing some quick calculations, streaming a 1280x720 image to the controller at 60 FPS will require roughly 158 MB of bandwidth per second. Add a fairly standard 16-bit 44100 Hz stream of stereo sound to that, as well as sensor, touchscreen, and button readings, and we're at around 160 MB per second, give or take a megabyte.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't streaming a 1280x720 image at 60 FPS and 32-bit color depth require 210.94 MBps?
On the other hand, if we take the rumored 854x480 screen and stream a video signal with 30 FPS and 16-bit color depth, it would need 23.46 MBps for the video. This way you could even use 5 WiiUMotes at the same time.
Wait a second. I'm definitely doing it wrong, because I calculated that you would need 0.46 GBps for Full HD video at 60 FPS and 32 bit color. That would be 1668.55 GB for one hour - this just can't be!

Does someone know how to properly calculate the bandwidth needed to stream a video signal?

EDIT: By the way, a 1920x1080 screen has 2,073,600 pixels, 4 854x480 screens have 409,920*4 = 1,639,680 pixels. The total pixel count would be 3,713,280 pixels. With 60 FPS and 32-bit color depth, 0.83 GB of data every second - if my method of calculating this is right, of course :P

EDIT2: Wait a second, the rumored screen size of 854x480 hasn't been mentioned here yet, right? Anyways, now it has :D

#4613 WiiU 's AMD GPU supports Eyefinity

Posted by Guest on 11 June 2011 - 04:12 AM in Wii U Hardware

http://www.amd.com/u...2011june07.aspx

In this press release, AMD mentions the custom Radeon HD GPU made for the WiiU to have "...high-definition graphics support; rich multimedia acceleration and playback; and multiple display support."
The multiple display support hints at Eyefinity, which is a feature of 5XXX or newer Radeon HD cards.

Because the GPU Nintendo uses is a custom one, it may still be that they took a 4XXX Radeon HD card and modified it to use Eyefinity, but that's unlikely as the 5XXX series uses less power at a similar performance. And by the way, Eyefinity supports up to 6 screens AFAIK, so we can still hope for the WiiU to allow more than one/two new controllers at the same time...

#4387 Wii U is the perfect console!

Posted by Guest on 08 June 2011 - 11:35 AM in Wii U Hardware

I really like the controller's size because I noticed the 3DS to get uncomfortable after two hours of Street Fighter :DJokes aside, what excites me most is the ability to have two different views of a scene. For example, imagine a Zelda where you can travel between different times. You have to visit a dungeon twice, and in the future, you have to solve a riddle, like lighting some torches in the right order. In the past, there's some kind of hint how to do it, and you're able to make a "screenshot" of it. Then, in the future, you display the screenshot on the controller's screen and can compare it with the future dungeon you see on your TV. You "hover" the controller over different parts of the TV like showed in the reveal video and write on your touchscreen in what order you have to light the torches. Your notes appear on the TV after that and you can happily move on =D

Look at the attached pictures of the Spaceworld Zelda tech demo and Zelda: Twilight Princess. There's quite a big difference. If the new Zelda tech demo is already beyond PS360 level, a Nintendo IP at the end of WiiU's life cycle is going to look awesome.

#4686 What's the hardest and easiest game you've ever played?

Posted by Guest on 11 June 2011 - 11:12 PM in General Gaming

Hardest: Cave Story
Easiest: I usually don't play easy games, but I guess this would be NSMBWii. The first 8 world were too easy to motivate me to play world 9; I know world 9 is harder, but collecting all coins is no fun IMO.

EDIT: Formatted the text properly. The 3DS browser surely has some flaws...

Hardest: Dwarf Fortress: Hardest damn game ever made, stupid fish always kill me >.>

I still don't get how to play this game, let alone be good at it :)

#5916 What do YOU want the Wii U to be for the consumer?

Posted by Guest on 14 June 2011 - 10:58 AM in Wii U Hardware

Define hardcore.
In my eyes, a "hardcore" gamer is someone who plays solely for the sake of gaming and having fun while doing it.

CoD is even more casual than Wii Sports from my point of view. The casual gamers playing Wii Sports might not care about gaming at all, but they're having fun while gaming. Everyone I know who plays CoD thinks of people who don't like CoD or Battlefield as "nerds". Thus, they don't play because of wanting to play games, they play for the coolness factor of FPS's while denying that they're gamers themselves. This is not casual gaming, it's even worse, it's the betrayal of gaming. And that makes them not even a bit hardcore at all. Well, maybe hardcore dumb.

If you're looking for real hardcore games though, games with a high difficulty, with a good gameplay, with huge worlds, count me in.

And no, I'm not a philosopher.

#6921 What Consoles do you have?

Posted by Guest on 15 June 2011 - 08:01 AM in General Gaming

I might purchase several old consoles such as N64, Gamecube, Game Boy Advance, Wii, PS2, PSP and PS Vita, if I got enough money.

PS Vita? What's that? It's so old I don't even remember anymore. And a Wii? Wasn't that Nintendo's console before the NES? :D

#6732 What Consoles do you have?

Posted by Guest on 15 June 2011 - 03:19 AM in General Gaming

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (sold)
Sega Master System (sold)
Nintendo 64
GameCube
Wii
Game Boy Pocket
Nintendo DS
Nintendo 3DS

Considering half of these consoles/handhelds are as old as or even older than I am, I guess you can say that I have a life. It's called video gaming.

#5959 What are you playing right now? System and favorite genre?

Posted by Guest on 14 June 2011 - 11:31 AM in General Gaming

Wii: Okami
DS: Pokemon White/Okamiden
3DS: Super Street Fighter IV
PC: Grand Theft Auto IV

Favourite Genre: Adventure and Racing

You like Okami? Awesome taste. Should give you 1+ for this, but... I won't :)

#5932 What 1st Party Franchise Do You Want At Launch?

StarFox!

Though I wouldn't say "no" to a new Okami, but... dang, it's a 3rd party franchise.

Last but not least, I'm pretty sure that EVERYONE who played Okami(den) loves this guy here:

He wasn't really important in Okamiden, but he's one of the funniest characters in Okami by far. His comments are epic :P

2 new sigs. I'm gonna edit them more today. I changed some colors and proportions of the header cuz I like it better this way =P

Anyways, I'm gonna add some reflections and try to make a .gif.

EDIT1: Added 2 additional versions.

EDIT2: Yet again 2 new versions. This time with reflections!

EDIT3: Gif file added. Hope it works!

EDIT4: Just noticed that the signatures are much too big. Have fun resizing them! <_<

I figured that you guys would have a hard time resizing my .gif, so I'll make a new one tomorrow. As for the other pics, I think it won't be too hard to resize them, and their huge resolution might be useful.

EDIT: Here's the new .gif. I made it smaller and revamped the animation. It takes a bit to load it first, but after that, it runs smooth.

#5945 The Wii U is 50% more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Ignore the clock speed. The GC's clock speed was a lot slower than the XBOX's, but the XBOX still was only a tad better.

#6746 Skyward Sword coming 9/25/2011 ?

Posted by Guest on 15 June 2011 - 03:35 AM in General Gaming

but why do you think the game is going to disappoint???

Don't know about Jabob, but my own hype got washed away by the WiiU tech demo. I know that Skyward Sword's gameplay is going to be extremely awesome, but somehow, I don't look forward to it as much as I did before seeing the tech demo.

Oh, forget it, just talking about it hypes me up, I can't wait anymore! Bring it on, Nintendo!
Funny how it already got reviewed 4 times.

On topic, I think that they should be ready by now. I mean, wasn't there an interview a long time ago where either Miyamoto or Aonuma said that they would have been ready if they hadn't changed the art style? And that the art style change took them one year of developing time? Well, since I don't remember anything more about it, this interview could very well date one year back, in which case they should be nearing completion soon.

#81836 Rumor: Wii U to support 4 U pads?

Posted by Guest on 30 May 2012 - 08:31 AM in Wii U Hardware

I'm not that convinced about that leak from MyNintendoNews. One of the claims is Crytek working on Wii U. Now, that could mean they either work on a game, or they work on optimizing the Cry Engine for Wii U. Judging from how the site mentions it, it seems like they claim Crytek is working on a game, but in an interview with the German news website Golem.de, Cevat Yerli of Crytek mentions:

IGM: Sonys Playstation Vita ist seit Februar auf dem Markt, Nintendos Wii U soll Ende des Jahres folgen. Was plant Crytek für diese Konsolen?
Yerli: Weder zur einen noch zur anderen Konsole haben wir aktuell etwas geplant. Für die Wii U wird es Spiele geben, die mit der Cry Engine laufen, allerdings stammen die dann von Lizenznehmern.

This translates to (nope, not Google Translator):

IGM: Sony's Playstation Vita has launched in February, Nintendo's Wii U is supposed to follow towards the end of the year. What does Crytek plan for those consoles?
Yerli: We have no plans for either console yet. There will be games using the Cry Engine for Wii U, but these will be made by license holders.

So, I'm not fully convinced of the site's credibility, but I honestly don't know.

Concerning the GPU: Even though it supports up to 5 devices, depending on the game, the problem could be that the GPU's just not fast enough to render all these images.

EDIT: Just noticed that confirms games using the Cry Engine coming to Wii U? He doesn't mention the time frame, though.

#4712 Nintendo's first fail...

The PS360 fanboys ranting about the "inferior" graphics only proved they don't like their own systems. NeoGAF is quite a funny place thanks to these ridiculous fanboys.
