#132657 Wii U Basic vs. Deluxe popularity

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:53 PM in Wii U Hardware

I think the Deluxe is definitely more popular although the 8gb units are definitely selling out as well. When I was able to grab a Deluxe at Best Buy this morning (by the skin of my teeth) the BB employee handing out numbers went through every single Deluxe, but still probably had about 10 or so 8gb ones left. I was 11 of 12 Deluxe units and there were only a couple people in line behind us that reluctantly went with the 8gb instead of nothing. Fry's sold out of Deluxe units for walk-ins (the lady said they only got about 5 extra), but they had about 8 or so 8gb units, but were ONLY selling as bundles. I walked into a Target about 20 minutes later and got the very last Deluxe there. They did not have any 8gb units on hand, but don't know what they started with. I found it odd there was even a Deluxe left. Went to a second Target in town 10 minutes later and they were 100% sold out.

Before I made my attempts this morning, I got on the waiting list at my local GameStop and they were already booked on preorders for all types. I was #1 on their waiting list for an 8gb unit and got on the list for a Deluxe and was probably around 24th in line. This was about Two weeks ago I got on their list for the Deluxe and one week ago for the 8gb. So, clearly at this store, the Deluxe was in significantly higher demand.

#132651 Teardown?

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:45 PM in Wii U Hardware

Yes there was a live stream but it was pretty useless.

To be fair, I'm not sure what's to be expected, really. If the innards don't explicitly show what the part details are, it makes it a little difficult to provide new information. Of course, that being said, this is what I inferred about the teardown since I didn't even know it was going on until they had already practically started reassembling it.

Auto power-down was temporarily disabled during my update portion of the download.

You're right. I'm seeing that on my update screen now as well. Oh well, I guess it didn't hurt to disable it first.

#132647 toys r us doing buy 1 get 40 percent off all wii u games black friday

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:40 PM in Wii U Hardware

There were two friggin tents set up in front of Best Buy this morning where I live. I was talking to the guys in line and they told me they were camping out for Black Friday! I thought they were just dedicated Wii U customers. I don't care what the deal is, I'm not camping out for a week to wait for Black Friday. I think people have been killed during Black Friday a couple times over the same number of years here in the US. I think it's mostly been due to being trampled or something. Then again, I think somebody was killed during the PS3 launch and maybe even Xbox 360.

Could you tell us how exactly you turn this feature off?

You go into the system settings "app" and along the bottom of your gamepad's screen you'll see various subcategories for options. One of them (around the middle I think) was the auto-off feature. Just select it and choose to disable it. I'd be more detailed, but I can't get at it right now since my update is downloading.... again...

#132638 Teardown?

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 03:33 PM in Wii U Hardware

There was a live stream last night at around 1am PST going on from the guys over at pcper.com. The completely disassembled and reassembled the 8gb unit.

Well, I was able to turn off the auto-off feature. The Nintendo network connection dropped about 30% of the way through so I just finished doing the initial configuration and disabled the auto-off feature before restarting the update. Then the Nintendo network crapped out again so now I'm on attempt #3. At least the download picks up where it left off.

#132581 Wii U Available at Walmart

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 02:51 PM in Wii U Hardware

Hmm, I ordered mine online with in store pickup without a hitch. I was kind of concerned, but absolutely no issues here.

I saw your original post, which is what gave me hope this morning. When I went on the website it would not allow me to order online for in-store pickup. Regardless, I ended up getting one at Best Buy across the street 20 minutes after I went into Walmart.

Well, I really hope that this doesn't take more than 90 minutes! I just started downloading the update 5 minutes ago before I even saw this thread!! On the plus side, I have the U plugged into via ethernet/USB adapter so the download speed should be quicker than using wifi.

#132327 Wii U Pick-Up Stories

Posted by naadofett on 18 November 2012 - 11:28 AM in Wii U Hardware

I'm on the waiting list at my local GameStop for a 8gb and 32gb to see whichever one comes in first. This morning I literally had a dream around 8am where I rolled out of bed on launch day with the feeling I could secure a Wii U somewhere. Then I woke up and realized I was only dreaming. Then I thought, well, maybe it is worth a shot after all.

Went to Walmart around 9:15 this morning (no pre-order) since the webiste said this store had them in stock 15 minutes before going over. They were sold out. Went across the street to Best Buy where there were already about 10 people in line just before 9:30 (non-preorders) and the guy came out and handed out papers for 12x deluxe units for people who didn't preorder (I was #11) and they had a stack of 8gb papers, but only a couple people in line after me at that point so they took 8gb units. After that I went to Fry's and got a Pro controller. They said they only had 5 deluxe units, which were all sold out. They had about 8x 8gb units there unclaimed, but were all stupid Fry's bundles that they couldn't sell the unit separately from. Then I went to Target near my apartment and grabbed their very last deluxe unit (non-preorder) for a friend of mine who is on a waiting list at GameStop and didn't make an attempt to get one on launch day because he thought they were sold out everywhere. Finally I went to the Target they recently added to our mall and they were 100% sold out already.

Walmart.com said they had the deluxe in stock at my local store, but when I got there they said they had already run out. It was a 25hr Walmart so who knows when, but probably sometime much earlier in the morning. I got there at 9:20ish.

#127313 is it too late

Posted by naadofett on 10 November 2012 - 03:56 PM in Wii U Hardware

I went back to the GameStop where I got on the waiting list for the deluxe unit this morning. I asked about getting on the waiting list for the 8gb white unit and I got put on that list also. He said I was #1 on the 8gb wait list since everybody else went for the 32gb system. He's pretty sure I'll have one before Christmas. I don't know how many preorder units they're getting, but we'll see when I get my hands on one from the next shipment.

Not in Australia, can get a deluxe edition just fine. In the US I believe you can still find a basic model pretty easily, which to be honest is more worth it for most people considering they were complaining about Nintendo Land before the bundle was announced, but now all of a sudden they are calling it the best deal.

Well, Nintendoland aside, what about the extra hard drive storage space and the bonus points you rack up when purchasing games? Isn't it something like 10% of the game's retail price ends up going towards credits that can be used in the eshop or something? That could pay off. Plus then there's the matter of aesthetic preference between black vs. white for some people. So $50 isn't THAT big of a deal with all of that considered. Unfortunately it could also mean longer waits.

Nowhere I have been has been taking anymore preorders and the online retailers definitely seem not to. I had to settle with getting on the local GameStop wait list and wait for more shipments after launch day.

Isn't there more to regions than simply the video format (NTSC vs PAL)? I believe other places around the world are assigned region numbers. If you buy a console from another region that can't play games from a different region code, then you just wasted your money.

I checked at my local Walmart and guess what... there's tons of per order cards!!! (which means no one pre-ordered) i can still pre-order! WOO!

You're lucky. My local Walmart didn't have squat yesterday. Nobody in my area has any open preorders left. So no launch day Wii U for me... and yes, I refuse to buy an overpriced unit on eBay or Craigslist. I can't help but wonder how many of the preordered units are going to be put up for sale on these other various sites at an insane premium. I'd find it amusing if people just decided not to buy the overpriced units just so the scalpers could feel the pain and have to sell at a more reasonable price, but who am I kidding? That will never happen...

Maybe your mom gets paid on the following Fiday, you know every 2 weeks and it happens black Friday is her payday. But I do feel places like Best Buy will have some on Black Friday, but you will have to be in line a week before just to make sure you get one as they will only have 3.

I was going to mention this as well. In my opinion, be happy your mom is going to get you one period ;) I remember when I was 8 and my brother and I had to BEG for a Nintendo and finally one year (around 1988 I think), one showed up under the Christmas tree. Talk about an amazing Christmas that was. Ok, I'm done with my "When I was a kid we didn't have..." commentary.

@The Walking Dead - Side note, tonight's episode was gnarly!

#124493 Gamepad Review (I tried out the Wii U at Best Buy)t

Posted by naadofett on 04 November 2012 - 05:47 PM in Wii U Hardware

Eh, I'm waiting till I get my own Wii U (black) to experience playing it first time rather than just playing at best buy.

I remember before the GameCube came out and the demo unit got installed into the Best Buy where I was going to college. I was there regularly playing the crap out of Rogue Leader (Rogue Squadron II). Then once it came out, I played the crap out of it some more. Playing it the store didn't impact my feelings of using the controller, BUT that being said, I'm kind of in your camp on this one. I didn't play the Wii either until I got it on launch day.

#124441 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

I take that back. The layaway ended on November 1st. I thought it went on until November 10th. My bad everyone. >.<

yeah, I do live in the US.

I thought this was the case, but your post gave me a sliver... a very small sliver... of hope that maybe I could put one on layaway. Unfortunately after just going to Walmart and navigating that hole I was denied. No big surprise there. Oh well.

It would appear that as I initially figured (and other posted), without a pre-order, you're basically hosed for launch day. I'm not about to pay somebody an insane amount of money on Craigslist, Amazon, or eBay. So I guess it's good that I at least got on a GameStop waiting list yesterday. The guy said there were about 24 people waiting for the deluxe model after preorders were taken care of. So who knows how long it'll take a single GameStop to receive another 30 or so units.

i have a little info on this.
if you didn't pre-order you have one shot to get a system before christmas.
all distribution companies took pre orders on promised shipments from august.
if  they received more stock since then it will be in the initial shipment for launch.
so get there and camp out on launch night because once they sell out that is it until the second roll out which has been set by the manufacturer as" no sooner than late december".
so yeah walmart should definitely have a few outside of pre-orders at launch but thats it.. and everyone will be wanting it and waiting in lines to get them.
the sad thing is i foresee another gouging event like wii's launch where every shipment that came in was bought up by e-bay lurkers with massive credit cards and sold for double the price.
*EDIT* this info pertains to north american markets only.

What's the source on this?

I'm in Southern California. I was under the impression that the Walmart layaway program for the Wii U had already ended.

#124252 For those who didn't snag a pre-order...

Posted by naadofett on 04 November 2012 - 09:51 AM in Wii U Hardware

I watched the Wii U announcement once I got off work that day and knew plenty well when pre-orders would start. At the time, even as a Nintendo fan, I wasn't sure if the Wii U was going to be right for me. I loved the Wii for quite a while and then, as with many others, it just started to collect dust. I was super excited leading up to the announcement, but then for whatever reason I lost a little interest. So time for pre-orders came and went and by the time I considered looking into it again and was not shocked to see everything sold out.

My budget for the coming couple of months has changed and so I'm looking at getting a Wii U again. I went into one of my local GameStops yesterday and ended up getting on a "waiting list" with $0 down and the list for the 32gb model is apparently ~24 deep, which doesn't account for those who pre-ordered. Then I found this forum and the mention of Target pre-order cards available as of about a week ago. I knew a week later the cards would probably be gone and at both Target stores where I live there were no pre-order cards available.  I didn't even bother with Best Buy or Walmart since I knew I'd have no luck there with pre-orders. I also went to my local Toys 'R' Us, but no luck there either. I expected all of this, but was hoping for a sliver of luck.

So, for those of us who didn't snag a pre-order... what are realistic options for launch day? I remember the days of the Wii in which I was able to wait in line more than once to get a Wii with friends and family, but it sounds like initial stock at stores will just be barely enough for presales. It sounds like there won't even be stock for those waiting in line. I know this is all my fault and I'm kicking myself for not pre-ordering, but it is what it is now. I just get a little concerned when the GameStop employee says (paraphrasing), "well, you will probably be able to get something by the end of January." Anybody have a finger on the pulse for launch day?
