Has anyone here played both the Wii and Wii U versions of Disney Infinity and if so are there any major differences

YES huge difference. Wii version only supports toy box multi player mode. Wii U version you can play multiplayer in Playset and toybox. Huge difference for some people. Graphics of course are a bit better as well.
