How close is it to the original gameplay-wise? I think it's more likely that I'll buy the GC version before the 3DS one.

Don't take my word on this (since I've only watched a friend play it), but it seems that Dark Moon, like I mentioned before, takes on a more puzzle-like gameplay style in comparison to the original. So if you've ever played a LoZ title, then you'll find the game's play style to be quite familiar, requiring for you to really think to solve puzzles and progress further in the mansion. Dark Moon also offers more than one mansion to discover, and the ghosts are entirely new. There also doesn't seem to be any humanoid ghosts in the game (rather disappointing to be honest), that, and the bosses seem to all be the same type of ghost. The game still closely emulates the original, however, but I feel that DM adds a bit more to the experience with the additional objectives like finding all 13 gems per mansion, and finding a boo for every mission to unlock a timed ghost capturing mission.

So in a sense, DM is pretty similar to the original, but adds more to the experience with new objectives and slightly altered gameplay. Getting the original Luigi's Mansion would probably be a better idea, regardless, so that you can acquire a better perspective of the series, rather than just jumping into the sequel like I did. :B

capturing the ghosts are the similar for luigi mansion 1 and 2

you have to stun the ghost with the flashlight before capturing them in the last Luigi mansion too, the flashlight made it easier to capture them  , only 3 differences, the flashlight abilty was upgrade for the Poltergust 3000, for the 1st Luigi mansion.

while luigi mansion 2  the flashlight ability you have by default.  only 2 mansion in the last one while luigi mansion 2 has many more to explore, plus more ghosts to capture. muliplayer mode is also extra thing 2, many of the puzzles are similar to the last one to solve, plus few extra ones,  but theres a things both games have same once the ghosts are gone in one room so is the loot so explore the from top to bottom checking everything plus every room has one big ghost so capture all small one before the capture the big ghost 1st, All big ghosts are portrait ghosts, bosses and boos, and u need many loot as possible to unlock ghosts, rooms, mansions, puzzles

this is lugi mansion 1

even the video says

lugi mansion 2

just started last night and played a level before bed. This game is top notch from the music to the story and level design. I can't wait to get into it again this evening!

Hi guys!

Just got this game yesterday , I'm on the 3rd stage now.

Really like it so far.  I don't know why some critic gave it very low score.

If you own 3DS and still haven't tried this game.

I recommend you to get it!

here's the review to help you make decision

Have fun!

I don't know where you got that from. There were only five reviews below 80 and only one of those is below 70. The average score is 86.

I've read between 12 hours to 20 hours, but depends how much time you spent exploring, hunting, and searching. There are 5 mansions I believe and multiple levels within each mansion. Levels can vary from 10 minutes to 30 minutes, perhaps a bit longer with the reasoning I mentioned previous.

I am still in my first mansion, started a few nights ago. I do about one level/mission per night and the quickest so far was about 12 minutes and longest was about 35 minutes because I spent time collecting lots of stuff and had trouble finding a pathway.
