The American Medical Assn. voted Tuesday to declare obesity a disease, a move that effectively defines 78 million American adults and 12 million children as having a medical condition requiring treatment.

The nation's leading physicians organization took the vote after debating whether the action would do more to help affected patients get useful treatment or would further stigmatize a condition with many causes and few easy fixes.

In the end, members of the AMA's House of Delegates rejected cautionary advice from their own experts and extended the new status to a condition that affects more than one-third of adults and 17% of children in the United States.

"Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately 1 in 3 Americans," said Dr. Patrice Harris, an AMA board member.

Tuesday's vote is certain to step up pressure on health insurance companies to reimburse physicians for the time-consuming task of discussing obesity's health risks with patients whose body mass index exceeds 30. It should also encourage doctors to direct these patients to weight-loss programs and to monitor their often-fitful progress.

So, pretty much willingly to be lazy and eat bad food is a disease now. Only in the USA.

No, it's actually a step in the right direction.  For many, or I'd dare to say most, obese people their weight problem has more to do with metabolic problems caused by insulin resistance than being fat, lazy slobs.  Their bodies won't burn fat because of the insulin response caused by sugars/carbs.  But thanks for perpetuating a stigma that makes lots of people hate themselves and feel worthless because their efforts to lose weight have shown little success and they end up blaming themselves and feeling ostracized!

(BTW what I'm referring to is called the insulin hypothesis and it is the scientific basis for diets based around carbohydrate restriction.  Read anything online or in print by the science journalist Gary Taubes if you are interested in knowing more. )

I see that too. I see some skinny types with high metabolisms bragging about how they need to eat a whole large pizza, lazy junk food addicts themselves (in my area it's about a 2 foot diameter, one feeds my whole family). Then they turn around and don't understand that the same habits cause people with normal metabolisms to potentially be morbidly obese. I seriously think that they assume fat people just eat that much more than them instead of understanding metabolic problems ARE an issue lmao.xD

I learned about it myself because my ex was really overweight but would eat really well, and was struggling to drop pounds even when exercising regularly. It was very strange, I really think it was a hormonal problem or something else, considering I was on the same exact diet as her so she wouldn't have to be alone in eating healthy. I was cheating on the diet all the time since it was so strict, and was losing weight at 2x her speed even though I barely had extra padding lmao. I had that little extra myself BECAUSE my hormones went really crazy for long enough to make my mom get irrational and be suspicious about visiting a guyfriend 12 months earlier, if that gives enough of an idea. :P

I know some people are obese because they really ARE lazy slobs who eat bad food, but it IS also caused by health issues. >>;;

People need to stop trying to remove responsibility from the world.

My ability to eat endless pizzas, junk food, and beer without gaining weight ran out when i was in my early twenties.

I regularly go on periods where I omit sugar and glucose (in breads and tortillas as well) because I start packing on pounds. Even with my active exercise regime.

Yeah, that's right! Let's label it a disease and it's sure to stop the problem! /sarcasm
