Traditionally they guy pays until the couple gets to know each other well enough to agree on a different solution.
There are exceptions such where the girl insists on a restaurant that the guy cannot afford, but if she's worth keeping the guy should be able to explain this and the couple can work something out.
I have no idea what the tradition would be for gay couples though...
