An unarmed man who may have been looking for help after a vehicle wreck was shot and killed by a police officer Saturday as he ran toward him, police said. The officer was later charged with voluntary manslaughter.

A statement issued by police said officers responded to a breaking and entering call on the city's east side around 2:30 a.m. Someone had knocked on the door of a residence, and the homeowner opened the door, thinking it was her husband. When she discovered it wasn't, she closed the door and called 911.

When officers arrived, they found Jonathan A. Ferrell, 24, a short distance from the home, and he matched a description given by the homeowner, police said. The statement said officers approached Ferrell to investigate the original call. Ferrell ran toward the officers and was hit with a Taser. Ferrell continued to run toward police when Officer Randall Kerrick fired his weapon, hitting Ferrell several times. Ferrell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they think a wrecked car discovered down an embankment in nearby woods may have been driven by Ferrell, and investigators say he may have been trying to get help from the resident who called 911.

Surprising news. I thought the police would defend this, guess it good they took responsibility.

The badge is a great honor and if you can't handle it and instead slaughter people you deserve prison.

Wow.

What a slimebag.

The officer committed murder. It is not uncommon for people frantically running to a police officer for help.

I wonder if the cop knew the victim - or his wife.

Something is very wrong here.

The police officer is provided a gun for a reason and is trained on how to use it.

One of the first things you do it offer a warning before you pull out your gun. Then another as you arm yourself.

There is no way this officere followed protocol.

I won't be surprised if it comes out this guy knew the wife ore the victim - or if his psyche evals prior to academy are reviewed to discover some bad tendencies.

Poor poor man and his family.

What I'm wondering is why the homeowner called 911 instead of offering the guy assistance.

That's not right. What Socalmuscle said and a little more. You don't just shoot an unarmed man. Heck, he shot him several times! If he's running and unarmed, he probably doesn't pose much of a threat.

What I want to know is how is knocking on the door of the house considered breaking and entering?

I don't know. I can come up with many different theories but I don't know.

That woman is an idiot. I can't think of how closing the door and calling the police is a rational reaction to someone you don't know knocking on your door.

Although, this article could be missing something specific that gave the woman a reason to freak out like that. (Or my idea of rational is completely different to the rest of the world)

But in the end it is the officers fault.
