The 3DS has already have an established library of games, decent third party support, and overall going to be the ideal handheld this gen. As you can tell/notice the 3DS's hardware is slowly becoming extremely "old" or "dated". I see Nintendo unveiling a prototype of their new handheld at E3 next year, fulling unveiling it at E3 2015, and having it ready for retail in either January 2016 or February 2016. Similar to the 2DS (much portable and smaller), instead of being a clamp shell design. It'll have two circle pads/ an OLED screen 5 inches (sticking it to Sony), The gimmick will also be some sort of virtual reality similar to what Microsoft is doing. It'll launch at at 275 price with Mario Kart 8.5, Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask remake, and Miyamoto's new IP.
Nintendo and the next generation of Handhelds.

It doesn't matter. Nintendo has a significant lead in the handheld market. The only reason the DS lasted as long as it was because it sold so damn much in such a short time. Eventually the stock investors are going to want Nintendo to release hardware much faster to compete with the rapidly-aging smartphone/ios market. Sony will be erased from existence this gen in the handheld race. No competition.

Why release a new console when the previous console is selling just fine? Nope, not happening. Nintendo's answer to the smartphones is the 3DS XL, 2DS and whatever future design they have in mind for the 3DS.

I'm pretty sure the 3DS is selling faster than the original DS, but whatever.

I think the next handheld would be a continuation of the DS series (DS4?), but with a slate formfactor as an option. After that, i think Nintendo still has a winning strategy; just have to bump up specs, increase screen resolution (easier if they take out 3D), build in a second joystick, maybe improve battery, all while maintaining a price point that's family friendly.

Already? I think, they need to give it some time. For their next handheld, they need to make a hybrid. A crossbreed of Gamestick and Vita. The handheld of a Vita, but the ability to play games in your pocket and on the big screen. This will allow for them to focus on a single device so they can pump out games very fast. Nintendo games are what sells Nintendo consoles and with a plethora of development studios focusing on one console, its a great idea. They can even still use the cross-screen idea. Nintendo's lack of selling a modern home console without a gimmick is evident. So having a handheld and a crap-ton of games would work very well. Just my 2 cents.
I think its too soon, the 3ds is still fairly new and to reveal it so early may decrease sales of the 3DS.

IN terms of gaming, the system is fine- but it probably needs some updating in terms of apps and usability- Nintendo should partner more with google to allow android apps to work on a 3ds.....

I think that was reported only in NA and not in other territories, plus it was Reggie...

The 3DS has already have an established library of games, decent third party support, and overall going to be the ideal handheld this gen. Yup
As you can tell/notice the 3DS's hardware is slowly becoming extremely "old" or "dated". I thought Nintendo purposefully does things this way in the first place
I see Nintendo unveiling a prototype of their new handheld at E3 next year, Because that totally wouldn't screw the fanbase at all
fulling unveiling it at E3 2015, and having it ready for retail in either January 2016 or February 2016. phft...ha. No. Just no. See the above response
Similar to the 2DS (much portable and smaller), instead of being a clamp shell design. Weren't people angry over there not being a clam-shell design?
It'll have two circle pads/ an OLED screen 5 inches (sticking it to Sony) Not exactly sure why Nintendo needs to further stick it to Sony...they're already creaming them in the handheld market. The gimmick will also be some sort of virtual reality similar to what Microsoft is doing. Microsoft into virtual reality? What? Assuming you're talking about the Kinect...why in crap's crap would we need it on a HANDHELD
It'll launch at at 275 price with Mario Kart 8.5, Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask remake, and Miyamoto's new IP. The 3DS/Vita had very mediocre sales at $250-300, so why would $275 be any different? But lol Mario Kart 8.5. That kinda made me laugh a bit.

It just seems like a dated handheld in my opinion. Maybe its the lack of Miiverse, but Nintendo could do much more but they don't.IN terms of gaming, the system is fine- but it probably needs some updating in terms of apps and usability- Nintendo should partner more with google to allow android apps to work on a 3ds.....

Nintendo were able to do this before in the past, because they HAD no competition. They are the kings of the handheld market. Now that Android/IOS gaming is becoming a thing, they need to get with the times. Especially if Sony somehow manage to survive this gen, and if the rumors are true about Google wanting to create a handheld. What's wrong with a new handheld coming out in 2016? The GBA lasted three years, and all other revisions pretty much came out in three or two years within the DS family. You can only push a handheld so far when you use all your triumph cards early. We are only lacking right now is Kirby, Metroid, and a dedicated DK game. Maybeee a revived IP. People weren't angry about the lack of the clamshell design, they were annoyed at the fact that it's a gigantic handheld with no screen protection. What's wrong with launching with a Mario Kart game? It'll showcase the power of the new handheld, and it'll leave room for a brand new Mario Kart game later on.Responses in bold italics.

Nintendo were able to do this before in the past, because they HAD no competition. Actually, they're still doing it now and making a crapton of money at it.
They are the kings of the handheld market. Now that Android/IOS gaming is becoming a thing, they need to get with the times. If by "get with the times" you mean "a new $300 device released every 9 months" and "Pay 2 Win energy-based games" then yeah, I guess they do.
Especially if Sony somehow manage to survive this gen, and if the rumors are true about Google wanting to create a handheld. Because Google totally has the new Mario and Zelda.
What's wrong with a new handheld coming out in 2016? The GBA lasted three years, and all other revisions pretty much came out in three or two years within the DS family. I believe you used the keyword yourself. "Revision." Not brand new overhaul, but revision. I'd more than likely expect a 3DS revision in 2016, but I don't see Nintendo releasing an all-new handheld so soon.
You can only push a handheld so far when you use all your triumph cards early. We are only lacking right now is Kirby, Metroid, and a dedicated DK game. Maybeee a revived IP. I'm fairly certain that Nintendo has plenty of trump cards to go through still.
People weren't angry about the lack of the clamshell design, they were annoyed at the fact that it's a gigantic handheld with no screen protection. I, uh. wait...are you talking about the 2DS? The system that is nowhere near gigantic?
What's wrong with launching with a Mario Kart game? It'll showcase the power of the new handheld, and it'll leave room for a brand new Mario Kart game later on. Oh, there's nothing wrong with a new Mario Kart game at launch. I just thought "Mario Kart 8.5" was a funny-ish title.

Not releasing a handheld every 9 months, but at least slightly updating the specs or offering something new to the table to breathe more life into their handheld. Nintendo has billions of dollars in their bank, they can afford to do this. They can essentially make up for the loss with Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, DK, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Pikmin, Metroid, etc New IPs like Dillion, Art Academy, Sakura Samurai, etc) Compared to the 3DS, the 2DS is gigantic. In terms of width.

I'm thinking 3 years. But short of better specs and tweaks to make it ergonomic, I can't guess as to what nintendo will do. They can't add too many gimmicks because the main selling point of the DS family has been price, not high specs like the the PSPs.

Hahaha. Nintendo may have used quite a few trump cards already, but there's plenty more that could be done in 5 years. Yes, 5 years. I'm thinking 2017 E3 or Tokyo Game Show reveal at the earliest. Maybe something said around GDC. On the market in 2018 or 2019.
2018 is too far, tooo far.
They can't live off crap graphics anymore. The 3DS is already showing its limitations. What makes you think they push the 3DS for another 6 six years? Especially when SD is becoming irrelevant.

you are seriously dumb if you think Nintendo is even thinking about unveiling new hardware before the first pokemon game is even launched for the system. You think they aren't pushing the console enough? When do they ever push in the way you want them to? That being said, pokemon (x and y) probably has the best online infrastructure of any hardcore handheld franchise out there. It has it's own Battlelog for goodness sake!! Nintendo has two to three pokemon games that they need to milk the crap out of this gen. I bought my 3DS at the midnight launch for pokemon and many of my friends have only acquired theirs in the last few months because of X and Y.
nintendo's just getting started with this console man, they've only had 2 waves of games, 2 more pokemon games and hopefully another Fire Emblem and Zelda somewhere down the line along with metroid and kirby

you are right, I didn't clarify my time window correctly, so let me rephrase my question: how can you possibly think nintendo is going to make an announcement of a new console on any level in the first year after pokemon's debut on the system?
