I'm not sure what all of this means to me as someone who more casually uses Steam... Will I have to have Steam OS in order to play the latest games from Valve for example?

I am assuming this Steam OS is Debian based? Considering they were working in Ubuntu for the Steam client.
I'm not sure what all of this means to me as someone who more casually uses Steam... Will I have to have Steam OS in order to play the latest games from Valve for example?
No you will not. The Steam OS is Linux based so yet another distro. Yet say there are special formats and you are running another Linux distro you can find ways to get other distro formats working, or with the ways of getting say Windows software to run with stuff like WINE(Wine is not an emulator). Meaning there is nothing stopping you even if you did. Next important note, Windows is the big game development OS so you have nothing to really worry about.
