Nintendo shut down Swapnote services last week because they were made aware of lewd pictures being exchanged with minors. But now the details have been revealed and its really bad. Men have been arrested and charged with statutory rape and child pornography. 

GoNintendo has provided a bullet point list:

- two men have been arrested
- they were alledgedly performing “improper acts” in hotel rooms with a 12 year-old girl
- this happened multiple times
- the men are aged 49 and 36
- this was facilitated through the 3DS
- child pornography charges have also been filed against another man, 44
- he allegedly had an 11 and 12 year old girls send him nude pictures through Swapnote
- other men have been charged with statutory rape and indecency through compulsion

This sucks, and Nintendo needs to make sure this kind of stuff does’t happen again.

Dang, that's worse than I thought it was. I thought it was stupid kids send each other nude. This is... welll...

all the same, I hate to be that guy but swapnote was just a tool, they would have found another way to get to kids. They don't shut down skype or omegle or facebook, and all of this happens there as well. You shouldn't punish everyone for this. I think they should re-open the internet services, but have more restrictions. Maybe make it like Wii U where you can't send pictures, only screenshots.

What I think all they needed to do, was disable picture taking and maybe even voice recording with swapnote, easy as pie.

Not necessarily, the app may not have a built in switch to only disable the camera. And Nintendo probably chose to take this opportunity to replace swapnote with miiverse.

Exactly. Disabling the online features of the app just means pedophiles wont do it through the 3DS not that they'll stop entirely but I'm sure Nintendo will be pleased to prevent such activities on their devices despite it only being a very small hit to suc h behaviour overall.

The only good thing about this is that Swapnote was a pile of crap to begin with.  When I want to message my friends I don't want it to take minutes to get into the app and hours for the message to arrive.

 

What is puzzling though, I thought Nintendo were supposed to moderate these messages anyway which is why it takes hours for them to be received?
