Today i was reading about Iwata`s comments on the whole software/hardware integration at their Q&A back in January and i just read something that was really interesting.

Some shareholder questioned Iwata on the possibility of having a unified platform: "(...)I got the impression that handheld devices and home consoles will first be unified, with handheld devices also functioning as controllers(...)".

Unfortunately for me, as i wanted that to happen, Iwata said no.

But here is where it gets interesting:

"(...)as I explained to you a short while ago [speaking about the president presentation], we are not saying that we are planning to integrate our platforms into one. What we are saying is that we would like to integrate software development methods, operating systems, and built-in software and software assets for each platform so that we can use them across different machines. This means that if we manage to integrate our platforms successfully, we may in fact be able to make more platforms. At the moment, we only have our current handheld devices and home consoles because if we tried to make more platforms, our development resources would be spread too thinly. The more we can share software across different platforms, the more development resources will be left for something else." - http://www.nintendo....31qa/index.html

Did Iwata just confess that Nintendo has intentions on increasing the number of platforms and at the same time, confessing that it didn`t happened so far because of this lack of specific integration?

At first i thought he was giving some example on how Nintendo can benefit from the SW/HW integration, but he`s seems to clearly pointing out at the fact that more platforms from Nintendo could come.

Also, wouldn´t be the first time Nintendo tries out a 3 pillar strategy. Remember NDS? It was supposed to be the 3rd pillar in Nintendo`s strategy.

Haven`t seen this discussed anywhere, so i got to ask, what`s your opinion?

Today i was reading about Iwata`s comments on the whole software/hardware integration at their Q&A back in January

If this was back in January then these comments were made pre-drought, back when the Wii U was thriving off of a successful holiday season, before the crap hit the fan and no one decided to buy the console anymore

So they could have originally had plans to make a 3rd pillar platform, but once the Wii U started to flop I would assume that all cylinders would be firing for the Wii U.

Perhaps within the next 2-3 years if the Wii U starts to stand on its own two feet and the 3ds continues to be the juggernaut of handheld gaming then we may hear more of this, but I highly doubt we'll see anything like this anytime soon

Wouldn't the third  pillar platform be the 2DS? It' honestly cheap and just there.

I wonder if they would bring back the Virtual Boy? Combine that with the power glove and that could be an excellent "third pillar"

He meant future platforms, not a third one to go with 3DS and Wii U.

Whatever the 3rd pillar is, I am sure it will be strong

Iwata also said it wasn`t something that would show results in the short-term, so, even if Iwata needed more human resources i think that in the long term Wii U`s situation won`t change things a lot.

Wouldn't the third  pillar platform be the 2DS? It' honestly cheap and just there.

It`s still 3DS. Just without 3D.

He meant future platforms, not a third one to go with 3DS and Wii U.

He meant at least a 3rd platform: "At the moment, we only have our current handheld devices and home consoles because if we tried to make more platforms, our development resources would be spread too thinly."

As you can see is comparing his current situation of handheld and home console to a situation where Nintendo could provide more.

At the moment, we're busy making 3DS and Wii U games, we don't have time to R&D new consoles, and also start on early development cycles for those systems to allow us to create launch titles and engines to facilitate our titles to be made for a new platform.

as you can see, pegasus generator.

I`m not sure i understood you. Were you giving an alternative view on my quote or are you offering a different quote?

Asuming the first, he also mentioned that this wasn`t a short term thing as he doesn`t expect this SW and HW integration to show results in the short term. But given his expressed desire, he hopes that when possible, a new platform could be introduced.

I assume, of course, that this new platform will share the same architecture, assets, etc of Wii U and 3DS or the next handheld/home console, as that is was the whole point of the integration.

If he was only talking about making the successors of 3DS and Wii U, he`s answer would make no sense.
