Mr. Tanaka's actual metroid theme, with proper arrangement. Almost completely forgotten now, and when not, NEVER arranged properly anymore...

A bit of a departure from some of the other stuff we've seen in here, but I'm going to link it anyways because this game is rad as all hell.

I think everyone has a song once they hear it they enter  a different world of a music utopia and can't move or talk while the song plays. Like Signfeld with Desperado. This is that song for me.

My preferred arrangement of terras theme/wanderer of time. Nobuo Uematsu's personal arrangement.

He said he had to write two themes for Terra/Tina, because of how dynamically she changed over the course of the game... Unfortunately, square has lost so many people who were involved in making these greats, thats no longer remembered, and the only Terra they represent is the weak, frail, amnesiaic, slave controlled, submissive, squeaky voice terra, an extreme exaggeration of her personality after waking from the slave crown, and losing her will to fight after the world ended, represented by soft flutes, pretty chimes, and zero contrast.

It was the dissidia games that finally completely did it for me. Oh I loved them, but their God Awful character assassination of Terra just left me painfully aware, they had no clue who the character was anymore. They took a small part of her, and made it the ONLY part of her. And now it bothers me to be reminded of it...

Guess it bummed out Mr. Uematsu as well, (and long before I caught on). At least enough to personally oversee the arrangement of several songs of the philharmonic events.

I found it amazing to see SNES' SPC700 sounding awesome early in its lifecycle.

I chose the Melee version because it's my favorite, but the original amd Zero Mission versions are also good.

Imagine playing Metroid for the first time, preferably you not knowing anything about it beforehand. You were exploring in this interesting, maze-like world and enjoying the Brinstar theme. You then enter Kraid's lair, and this music starts playing. It's a completely different tone than the somewhat cheery Brinstar theme. You know something is about to happen, but you don't know what. This song creates a sense of dread that you didn't feel up to that point, and it perfectly sets up the first real boss fight of the game. (at least that's what I think; either way it's a damn good song)

The theme of Zero Two from Kirby 64. One of the darkest, most confronting pieces of music I've heard from a game, which is fitting for one of the darkest and most confronting boss fights I've reluctantly fought... There's just something -- or, rather, everything -- about fighting Zero Two that just doesn't seem to sit right with me. It hits even harder when you remember that it's from Kirby, of all things.

Just for some added flavour, here's a lovely piano rendition of the same song. This one almost borders on 'haunting', and really plays-up a sense of tragedy surrounding Zero Two himself.

KIRBY MUSIC SHOULDN'T BE THIS GOOD.
