Was thinking of posting this up. Beat me to it again I see.
Anyways, while I would really REALLY hope this is some sort of big acquisition of a major third party or something of that nature, I get the sickening feeling that it's something for Iwata's dumbass QOL pet project.

It is, can't be anything else. They've been talking about it a lot

It's a shame really. Imagine where that money could have gone otherwise. Buying out Platinum and possibly Mistwalker for example.

The vitality sensor returns as the QoL system.

100M is a lot of money.
Being tech, it might be related to QoL.
Too bad Nintendo already said "no new HW at E3".
The mistery continues!

Nintendo have denied the DSi XL, 3DS XL and 2DS months before they announced them.DéliopT, on 07 May 2014 - 10:53 PM, said:

I don't think 100 million is a lot for a large company.

Hopefully enough for a couple independent developers for some new fresh ips that can evolve overtime into greatness

Today I read that R&D for just the Xbox One controller was $100M. I obviously know nothing about this but how could that possibly be true?!?
At any rate, if hardware R&D is really that expensive for a controller then I suppose this could be for hardware but nothing major like an actual console.

Why? Nintendo already owns every worthwhile peice of talent golden age squaresoft ever had. Ff6, ff7, xenogears, chrono trigger... Nintendo has the majority of the talent behind those games. Most of them are working on X right now.My thought is that since Sony sold 9.52 million shares of SquareEnix a couple of month's back; that those shares is what Nintendo bought. [The original linked news post said that it could be anything. ]
The only thing they dont have is in mistwalker.
Squeenix is just a festering rotting husk.

I don't mean 100m is a tiny amount to buy a company, I mean 100m isn't a lot for a large investment into anything when the company is as large as Nintendo.Hopefully enough for a couple independent developers for some new fresh ips that can evolve overtime into greatness

Small R&D price tag sounds about right.
