Now for making your first video game, you really need to keep it simple. Keep it 2D, go with a program like Scirra Construct 2 or Game Maker Studio, and make it for PC. Then later you can move onto compilers and like C++, or just make a 3D game, and make it for PC or other systems.

Art programs I recommend (though I'm bad at art):

Ms paint
Photoshop
Gimp
Blender (for 3D)

Game engines I recommend:

Scirra Construct 2
Game Maker Studio
Unity (bit harder)
Unreal Engine (bit harder)

You don't have to believe me that Scirra Construct 2 and Game Maker Studio are good. Just google it and try them, for a few days. Read the help files and try to make a 2D platformer or bouncing ball game.

Game I made: m93gas.jpg

Download link: http://www.mediafire...6azl4j/AL_game.

Controls A key Arrow keys, needs Windows PC to run, unzip and click on something like agent light.exe

Oh man, I'm gonna make the most intense 2D platforming game in the history of ever.

Not video game creation related but similar nonetheless, i found it interesting Miyamoto used flipnote studio for his rough storyboard on the Pikmin short movies.

My question for you Porhorse, what program do you use for sketching up ideas and such?

I don't think I use any. I'm not even really an artist. I just work with things until I like them. Scirra Construct 2 and Game Maker Studio have wonderful editors.

So you don't ever sketch any ideas down or storyboard.. not even on real paper?

Only time I do that, is if I need to estimate in my head how many sprites (2d images) I need, to estimate how much an artist might charge. Hint: A cheap artist charges $3-$5 a 2D character, background, etc, if you can't make quality stuff yourself. Or you can buy art packs.

Now if I was doing something professionally, it would be a different story.

Edit: 2d, not 3d

Ok i was just curious. I am not a game designer but have tried some different programs in the past including Google Sketchup, I mostly use photoshop, and notepad for simple things now work related.

I went to school at the University of Advancing Technology game development college for art with other courses for awhile. They had you planning EVERYTHING, and I hated it. They were trying to make you into a professional.

Isn't that what schools do?

Ii got a new job recently which involves a lot of Unity, I would've say it's hard to use, very easy actually, although it'll be hard if you have no idea how to script JavaScript or C#. But you could probably wing it by copy/paste script from the Internet so it's all good!

That's one thing I hated about school, the practical work was fun but they made you write tons and tons of reports on a 1 hour job while the planning and annotations take up about 5 times the length

I'm just going to post like a dozen links or so for people who want to learn how to make videogames. I suggest you change the title since it's kind of confusing.

This is a great book if you're looking specifically for game programming and don't have any programming experience.

Just open it.

Tried code academy before, completed PHP one
To this day I still have no idea what PHP does or how to use it. Sure I know how to make arrays but I don't know the point of them, that's just how I felt after using it :s
