i can almost gaurantee it will be better . just think about how nintendo is taking notes on psn and xbox live so it will probably have good features from both with extra stuff from nintendo themselves.


As long as it includes user names, friends list, voice chat, a messaging system and all that other good stuff I'll be fine with it. It'd be cool if Nintendo could take some tips from Steam and have instantly changable display names, community groups etc. as well.

hey yall
first off i would like to say im a new member, ive been stalking this place for at least 2-3 months although
but i feel i can really help this topic with what its about

i got an approximately 6 year old server from the hp junk pile (my father works there), i use it to run a normal 8-10 person (max 43, predicted if i run it as a pure process) minecraft server, while still having enough power to also run a tf2 server on the side (or enough to play video games, dont tell anyone), since the server was free, the major costs are my predicted 180$ electricity bill and the extra 20$ (40+20) i pay for my families monthly internet upgrade
the server was originally 2000'ish$ 6 years back
sooo, 2000 starting + 180 yearly + lets say 80 monthly = 3114$/year starting and 1140$/year afterwords

That's silly.
Servers cost a lot, and a lot more to upkeep.
For example, the server I rent costs 50 euro/month, and it's one of the cheapest out there.


that seems about right, but thats commercially, if you think of it, my internet was sold commercially, the servers you got were for a profit of the company renting it to you, the people at nintendo or any other company can use old servers and get cheep new ones, and get nice hardcore internet fixes, so 1000$ (750eu.)per server a year seems fit,which could happily satisfy a large or multiple game matches and a good 300 connections and internet transmissions a minute for the whole year

that means nintendo would only have minor losses (5$ per person if the servers were resposible for about 200 people each(as in everyone online and offline at any one moment))

of course, all of this is just estimated off of my experiences, ill look it up and edit further if i feel it needs changing

edits 1:i found servers spend more towards 300$ a year in electricity
2: how the server is used greatly increases what power it needs to be, (a gaming server being 1000-1500, a normal transmission server about 500)

No i dont think they will charge.

With that being said i find it to be rather annoying that everybody wants nintendo to have a better online service then xbox live and psn yet they arent willing to pay.

my personal opinion is that if nintendo does not make free servers
does not at least make a quarter step past ps3
or makes that remote require batteries
then i'll be calling bs and would rather enable my server gui and spend hours working around WiNdOw's only games to work on linux, good day to you sir!
linux is better, and this is off topic

just only comment on the free servers part and dont make my mistake before the post gets deleted

sorry, but servers cost 0 money for this companys, whatever you say... If you search over the internet, how much this companys pay for their servers, you will find that this costs NOTHING.. zero money..

Even arenanet that I mentioned before, stated that. That the reason they dont add fees in their MMO's, is that does not cost anything to them... As for the customer representatives, either ways, they are there from the first place, they dont get extra bucks for it..

When you said you pay 50 euro per month, you mean, renting a space on the internet? fee? well imagine that game company's got their own... lol Another example is EA with swotor.. They charge the same money as wow does... And guess what, nothing from this money goes to the servers.

When originally the game came out, it cost them a lot of money, as they invested alot in the sound quality of the game (lol), I mean alot.. and the speculation was, if they can keep up to 4 months, 2 million customers, they could repay all this debt... Well they made it... Now they got profit.

As for the game servers, each company got franchise and/or official distributors... Each one have a couple of servers, that is already is written in their contracts, also marketing, etc.. so Its country got its own server for xbox, ps3, nintendo, etc..


You must be crazy. Even if what you say is true -- which anyone who runs a server business (I have several friends who do, one who went out of business because it was too costly and he didn't have the client base) would tell you your wrong -- but let's assume your correct.

Is it free for them to pay cyber security analysts not 100% sure on what the actual job title is) to keep our information -- like location, credit cards, names, and other private info -- from predators? I think Sony and many others have taught us this is a real threat, and Nintendo doesn't want their good name ruined by some punk hackers. Thats not free since those jobs could easily pay 100k a year (if not more) for one, and they will have several if not more.

Is it free for the IT Department that will run daily, monthly, yearly maintenance on these servers to ensure they stay active and run at 100% so we can enjoy the games we play (which, by the way, the stress of MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of people all connecting to these servers do take a toll). I can tell you IT jobs pay a lot, since I have actually considered going into this field.

And then to maintain and keep everything running with the interface, to keep developing it and adding features and testing those features and make sure it is all working correctly, cost's money because you have to pay someone to do that.

So your wrong, on many different levels. It's not free, and there are ways to pay for it without charging (Nintendo and Sony both found ways of doing it) however you ever wondering why Xbox Live is so much better then what those companies offered? Why you don't hear about Live being hacked not only once, but multiple times over and over again, like Sony was last year? It's not because people didn't try. It's because Microsoft paid them better and was able to hire better people, while Sony wasn't. Plain and simple.

And to answer OP's question, I would be open to payinf for Live like features, but I think playing the game should be part of the cost of the game (and obviously the game price will become higher).

And also some of the first console online services to ever exist. I think Sony kind of set a standard by making PSN free, so Nintendo would probably feel more comfortable now providing a free online service. I really can't imagine anyone other than Microsoft charging for online in this day and age.

If nintendo required a payment i doubt it would affect there sales

Everyone wants the best of both worlds but no one wants to pay for it, its a shame

I really hope it is free unless it is better than XBL. Honestly, though, looking at Nintendo's track record with online gaming and everything I can't see them coming out of nowhere with an incredible online service. I realize they've been looking to PS3 and Xbox 360 as their mentor, but it would amaze me if they improved it enough to compete with XBL, and this is one of the very few things making me reserved about a day 1 purchase.

Another problem is simply the image that Nintendo gained all thanks to the Wii. Most households own a Wii, and let's face it, very few want it anymore and got bored with it quickly because it soon became a child's console with primarily terible, rushed games with a gem of a game as a needle in the haystack of junk quick cash titles. I'm worried about this happening again, because we're in nearly the same predicament. Everyone is frothing at the mouth to get a piece of this incredible, innovative gaming hardware, but not considering the possible control issues involved or whether it may just be a novelty and get boring quickly.

I realize that Nintendo has tried to fix these problems by having one central controller with two control sticks and a more traditional setup, but then they added a touchscreen and cameras and all that to it, which, don't get me wrong, sounds like it will be absolutely incredible if used correctly. They key words in that previous sentence? 'IF used correctly.' This is the same thing as the Wii.

The motion controls seemed like it would the best thing ever and we all had different ideas of how it could be used in incredible ways, but none of those great ideas came to fruition, and if they did, the game was either low profile or had problems making it difficult to play. I still say the second best game on the Wii was Wii Sports solely because they used the motion control very well, didn't bother adding pointless, repetitive minigames that characterize most titles populating the console, and used the innovative idea in a way that showed what it could do.

Anyway, I'm sorry for this rediculously long post/rant, but this is my first post on these forums and it sort of incorporates my last few months of thoughts regarding the Wii U.

PS: One last thing, I'm also worried that once the Xbox 720 and PS4 arrive, and their specs are revealed (which may or may not end up being way higher than the Wii U) the 3rd party devs might dissappear, just like they did with the Wii. This situation feels all too familiar. Also, so sorry for the wall of text, I tried to break it up a little bit. :P Finally, I'd still love to have a Wii U, but E3 this year may very well be my deciding factor. I love online gaming AND Zelda. :(

TL;DR: I'm worried that the Wii U may end up going the same way the Wii did, even though it appears to be getting good 3rd party support now.

So...I'd say your question is already answered, and Nintendo Network is free.

In Japan and America, they have sent out some dogs/famous people via spotpass.
If that's the only requirement to be a "Nintendo Network" title, it's hardly going to be very impressive on logo/name alone.
