I wanted the drunk guy(Haymitch) to win. Unfortunately, he wasn't playing. He was the best character in the movie, though.

These aren't spoilers, just what I thought about the characters in the movie.

I didn't like Pita, he was written okay, but wasn't too great.
Gale was just that guy from the Twilight series.
I don't get why Prim is all that great, granted, I have only read the first book.
Katniss was an alright character, but the movie didn't really show her courage or rebelliousness.
Rue was likable, but could have been given more screen time.
Thrash was just sort of there. I think I respected him more in the book because he seemed much more noble.
Kato was the typical jerk. They easily pulled off that in the movie, but never mentioned his motive. The most cardboard character of all.
His allies suffered from the same problem.
Everyone else isn't really important enough for me to remember.

Should I go watch the movie if I haven't seen the game?
i.e. Worth it?

The Hunger Games is a book.

Anyways, the movie is pretty good compared to the book. Unlike most book movies like Twilight.

My sister watched it she really liked it, I guess I'll check it out sometime. Otherwise I don't know much about it. :/

Bunch of kids killing each other a la Battle Royale, but far more tame considering it's based on a young adult series.

I'm pretty sure I spelled Prim, Rue, and Gale correctly. But I misspelled the names on purpose(for comedic reasons and because I can't remember how Kato and Thrash are spelled).

To properly answer your question, I think that it is because it is pretty well written. I don't know why it's getting all of this hype right now because it came out a few years ago. I think it's in the same situation that Harry Potter and the Twilight saga was in though. To be quite honest, I got bored on the first five pages.

I've only seen the movie, but I'd recommend seeing it.
My dad did kinda screw it up for me though by being loud throughout the entire thing.
I'm not going to post any spoilers, but the main love connection didn't seem too real to me.
Other than that, it was a really good movie in my opinion.

The book series is simply brilliant. The movie was also pretty good, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I definitely suggest both the books and the movie to everyone.
