It still has friend codes, yes. But there is also an account system in place and some sort of achievements.
And there is a way of adding friends without using their friend codes...
Don't get worked up over nothing!

So Iwata saying that it's too late for Nintendo to catch up is not them giving up?
They aren't giving up at all, this is just a psychological tactic to down play the Wii U's online so that Microsoft and Sony will feel safe and get comfortable and rest on their laurels and then all of a sudden when Nintendo releases the Wii U they get blindsided by the most epic online ever

Concerning the friend code situation, I have 3 words (1 an abbreviation) that should put this entire situation in perspective: Steam ID Number.
Based on the description of the network we've been given so far, I suspect the "friend code" will operate in a similar manner, only applying to account matters rather than account-interaction (which begs the question why call it a friend code at that point?). When I attended a StreetPass OC meet recently the Nintendo rep in attendance said you could have your info in up to 5 systems, so I suspect the number would also be used in system transfers to verify the account owner authorized it.
