Confirmed.

Good to hear. I knew Nintendo wasn't going to charge for their online service.

"Nintendo held a shareholder's meeting on Thursday where president Saturo Iwata all but said that the online network for the Wii U will be free."

That's nice. However, no pay could mean a mediocre online service.
Let's hope it doesn't translate to that.

Nintendo hasn't exactly been great regards their online and network structure. The online network is free on PS3 and while it's decent it's not as solid as Xbox Live. Even though Xbox Live costs money it is far more solid, robust and structured with far better social, network and multiplayer features and I very much doubt a free or even paid service from Nintendo can match that.

This is great news and I think it is the fair thing to do considering the type of demographs Nintendo has been aiming for with the Wii and Wii U. They seem to aim for the family, casual, and diehard Nintendo fans who all would benefit from free online services. Microsoft on the other hand will charge the money because it has the name Microsoft attached to it....and the younger CoD generation of gamers are willing to pay it without thinking twice.
