You may have noticed that there are lots of rumours flying about regarding next-gen consoles. No one knows definitely when Microsoft and Sony will unveil their successors to the current Xbox and PlayStation, but Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has said that it will let Microsoft make the first move

In the Business section of The Times today, Hirai said, "Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?"

It seems like Sony plans on releasing their system last again. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

“Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete.”— Rod Serling, “The Twilight Zone” The Obsolete Man

Seems smart enough. Good for me too so I don't need to be tempted for another system for that much longer. :P

Seems to coincide with the latest most solid leaks showing sony having a considerably more powerful machine than ms.

They just don't want what happened to Sega by Sony years ago happen to them by Microsoft. They're probably gonna be chickens and do it AFTER E3. If they do, then their E3 will suck.

That is actually a clever idea. But what happens if all the companies do it? No one would be brave enough to release a console first so there will be no new consoles for 20 years. lol Imagine that.

It's just big-dick talk I think. I don't think Sony will release the most powerful console, but they will look at Xboxs specs AND then Wii Us specs to find a perfect ballance between acceptable specs and price. You know what I mean? I don't think they'll go down the more power = better route again, because it failed.

No, they arent even 'taking that route' Its not a massively powerful machine. Its not even going to compete remotely close to current high end rigs. Its just considerably more powerful than microsofts smaller, thinner, cooler box.

Its almost like devs have been saying for months this gens not going to be like last gen for a reason or something.

yea this is just silly talk. If they really are contingent on what MS is doing then they clearly don't have a solid self-innovative plan going into next gen. Non the less, can't say having the power house system failed them, since they did just pass MS in xbox360 sales worldwide.

I like how Sony is prodding Microsoft. I agree with what Colin said though, Sega jumped the gun - Sony then added a DVD player and we all know how that worked out for the Dreamcast (R.I.P) . I think we will hear something before E3 , thats for sure - its only a matter of time.

Sony had nothing to do with dreamcasts demise.

Saturn, 32x, and sega cd were the reason why sega went under even though they suddenly started making money hand over fist at the launch of the dreamcast.

The Saturn, 32x, and Sega CD, while all great systems - were commercial failures, but NOT directly what put Sega out of business. Also the Saturn was only a commercial failure outside of Japan. The absence of a DVD player and ease of piracy is what killed the Dreamcast. It's a well known fact the PS2 sold like hotcakes at first...as the cheapest DVD player in Japan. The Dreamcast had the graphics, the games, and the online functionality to succeed. I never said Sony directly caused the Dreamcast's demise. However the addition of a DVD player helped it take off, especially in its homeland...which helped put the console to rest. The past cannot be changed, but myself and a lot of other people speculate that if the DC had a DVD player and pretty much any anti-piracy capabilities...things may of been much much different.

Dreamcast had everything it needed to succeed, sega didnt, they were devastated by their long line of commercial failures, they couldnt hang around long enough for the dreamcast to pull them out.

Even with no ps2 Sega would have gone under.

I disagree. People think Sega sunk tons of money into the CD and 32x, but they didn't. They were meant as addons to prolong the life of the Genesis and even though they failed, Sega was still financially sound from the Genesis itself. The Saturn was a monster in Japan, but failed outside. The Dreamcast came into the fight already crippled, the poor reception of the Saturn continued over to the DC and a lot of people brushed it off completely. That coupled with no DVD player, no support from EA - which I'm sorry but the 2K series was way better...and piracy...that lead to the demise of the DC. The PS2 launching with a DVD player was the nail in the coffin.

The saturn was a monster in japan? The highest selling game on the saturn vf2, only sold 1.3 million copies in japan.

Sega saturn only sold 5.8 million units in japan during its entire lifetime.

The sega dreamcast had aquired the lifetime sales of the saturns entire life cycle by the time of its pre-mature demise.

At a software tie in ratio of 8, it was doing better than the n64, super nintendo, and even the genesis.

Sega came into the generation crippled. The dreamcast was making them money, at that tie in ratio it was practically hand over fist, it was just too late.

I agree to a point. I don't think It's fair to look at lifetime sales of the Saturn compared to a lot of other systems that were developed for longer. The psone was still getting support for years after the Saturn was discontinued. Either way, No one knows what the Dreamcasts outcome would of been if Sony did things differently. My opinion is the Dreamcast would of been a much different story were it not for the lack of a DVD player and anti piracy measures.

Let's not forget about Shemnue: while that game is one of the first to be mentioned when discussing the Dreamcast's legacy, it was also a financial nightmare to make. Each Dreamcast owner would have to buy two copies to make a profit.
