apparently these are the specs for the next gen xbox...i don't like the name though.

CPU:

- x64 Architecture

- 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)

- each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache

- each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache

- each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources

- each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock GPU:

- custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor

- 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads

- each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle

- at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second

High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present

Storage and Memory:

- 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)

- 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)

- from the GPU’s perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170 GB/sec.

- Hard drive is always present

- 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

Networking:

- Gigabit Ethernet

- Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct

Hardware Accelerators:

- Move engines

- Image, video, and audio codecs

- Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware

- Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing

Specs are great and all, but 'vNext'? Xbox Next I could understand, but vNext doesn't make any sense.. it sounds childish somehow. Xbox Next sounds great, however, in 8 years when there's a new one on the market, it won't be so next anymore. Kinda like why the Revolution shouldn't have kept that name. It wouldn't be revolutionairy by now.

Good thing they have so many cores, because core for core, espresso hits this a lot harder than anyone would have imagined.

on the flip side, Unfortunately, they have so many cores. Amdahl can tell you what problems that brings.

For the record, espresso also has one dedicated hardware thread per core, but it gets six executions per clock cycle, as opposed to this custom jaguars 2.

The meltdowns on this across the internet are awe inspiring.

Not going to happen.

These are nice small, cool, lower power, low clocked chips.

Unlike the G5 (what 360 and ps3 cpu's were based on) and its derivitives, which were so hot they had to be liquid cooled and then sprung leaks everywhere.

This is a little bias, Saturn. RROD isn't even an issue with the 360, it rarely occurs anymore.

I think Microsoft learned a valuable lesson. I highly doubt we will see RRoD issues with the next console. If we do - then they will loose a lot of gamers. There is no way they could possibly let an issue like that persist.

If any company has a RROD-like problem, it'll be Sony. Kitiragi or whatever pretty much admitted that they would rush to put together something better than microsoft's spec after they announce it.

Nintendo and Sony are known to make consoles that last. Microsoft not so much, they go for the cheapest materials available hence RROD which is pathetic in this day and age. Typical American build quality, they design it, it breaks. Just like American cars etc all are crappy made.

8GB of ram is typical Microsoft. Just like how the 360 had 512mb but only around 450mb was available for games, max.

The 720 reserves 3-4GB of RAM for the OS. The more I hear on the failbox 720 the more PS4 will destroy it, good riddens Microsoft.

Where are all the "slow CPU" articles or posts? Hmmmm funny that. Dat 1.6Ghz 720 CPU - LOL

just saying, Sony say they want ms to go first because they don't want them to see their specs and copy them, which implies to me that that's what they have in mind.
Reacting is never a good idea imo.

Nintendo yes, Sony hell no. There are plenty of reports of Playstation/PS2 no longer reading disks and PS3s getting YLOD. Perhaps not the scale of the Xbox 360 problems, but that WAS a huge design flaw, which they eventually fixed. I only had my Xbox 360 fail once and it was repaired under the extended warranty. On the other hand people with the YLOD on PS3 have to pay to get it fixed, so Sony is better how exactly?

As for RAM, what on earth are you talking about?
My PC only has 8GB of RAM but runs all current games on the top settings without running low on memory. With an OS and games optimised for a specific hardware configuration, 8GB of RAM is HUGE. Are you forgetting the developers which already praised the RAM of the Wii U, and that is only 1GB available for games right now. Even if Xbox only had 4GB available for games, how could you consider four times the size of the Wii U RAM as small?

The rumour I read was that PS4 would have half the RAM of Xbox 720 but it would be unified much faster RAM. That still doesn't alter the fact, there will be less of it. That means either less RAM for the OS (so again, Sony end up with less icing on the cake, icing which is actually useful for multi-tasking social features) or risk ports from Xbox 720 to PS4 being problematic due to low RAM.

So the Xbox 360 having "only" 450MB of RAM is a failure, yet the PS3 is so much better with less than half of that? You ever heard of a little game called Skyrim which just had a HUGE delay in releasing the DLC as they ran out of memory and had to do a lot of work to try and squeeze it into the tiny RAM of the PS3.

Even ignoring specifications, the Xbox 360 has by far been an eye opener for me. I'd be quite happy with a slightly lower specification machine if that means I get the features I have come to expect from Xbox.
That being cross-gaming voice chat, automatic background syncing of achievements, being able to fire bring up the guide and send a message or start a chat with a friend WHILE THE GAME IS STILL LOADING IN THE BACKGROUND. I'm not sure it still applies but on some games at least I had to QUIT THE GAME to get into the section of the XMB to send a reply to someones message, really poor functionality.

I do not trust for a moment that Sony can pull of that stuff. Somehow they managed to make it even WORSE on PS Vita than PS3, despite having a lot more RAM available to keep that stuff in the background. When I am in a game its a brilliant system, but the whole OS is a pile of garbage. I can't even browse Playstation Store without getting connection errors all the time and I STILL have to sync my bloody trophies and all messages appear on Vita AND PS3, having to read them on both to make them go away. PSN is just really really poor and they do not seem willing to do a complete rewrite of the infrastructure to make it more efficient for newer hardware.

I still have my launch PS3 with zero problems which I play at least 12 hours a week. PS3 failure rates are much less than half the embarrasing RROD issues, infact I am on my 3rd 360 due to that typical cheap Microsoft build quality.

Um you do realise PS3 had 512mb of total RAM, 256mb was XDR which was a hell of a lot faster than 360's. Edram did help the 360 however, it was on a daughter die. Would like to see what Wii U can do with over 3x eDram on the actual GPU.

I never said the 720 would have small RAM, I said Microsoft are misleading by never listing how much RAM is usable for games. 360's RAM was shared (once again Microsoft didn't include that) and I heard as little as 300mb was for games. Even Nintendo's very little spec release information mentions that important factor.

Do some research, every article that knows what they're talking about say the same thing, regardless of whether 720 having 8GB RAM for games the PS4's 4GB of gddr5 destroys it. But it's been pretty much confirmed the 720 is reserving a whopping 3-4GB for the OS so that just makes the 720 look even weaker when you factor in the PS4's superior CPU + GPU combo.

The difference between Wii U and 720 will be pretty close but as usual PS4's exclusives will look a generation ahead, this time PS4's multiplats will also be superior than 720.

I am really happy with Wii U and look forward to it's AAA titles, yet the PS4 will be when I am in the graphic whore mood.

So many fan boys in here. Bagging out consoles before they are even released. How about you stop being a closed minded fwit and realise that there is more than one console. Just because you can't afford more than one doesn't give you the right to bag the crap out of them.
