Hello everyone!,

Before I start, to those that haven't seen the Nintendo Direct yet (http://www.nintendo....ive/01-23-2013/), you should do so!

Both new Zeldas sound awesome! After listening to Mr. Aonuma talk about the visual style of the new HD Zelda game, I just wanted to make sure I understood correctly:

It seems to me that Mr. Aonuma didn't necessarily say that both games are going to have the same artstyle (even if things turn out that way, I am totally fine with that for the record). I will explain how I came to this conclusion:

Mr. Aonuma started talking about the new HD Zelda and the different experiments he and his Zelda team have done for the visual style of the game. The E3 2011 Zelda tech demo for Wii U, the video the Zelda team called the Zelda HD Experience, was one example of their experiments:

With that in mind, lets rewind a bit. He started off by talking about rethinking the conventions of Zelda for the new Zelda in HD, then after that, he changed gears by saying: "Separately from that,...". He then talks about the different artstyles they have redone in HD from past Zelda games as experiments for finding a visual style for the new HD Zelda. The images he shares with us next "have emerged from the development process for this new Wii U game...". Notice all the images he presents are from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Interesting...maybe he is going to say next that this visual style was decided upon for the new HD Zelda. After all, they "have emerged from the development process for this new Wii U game...". Instead he mentions the reasons for showing us the pictures.

Continuing my quoting directly from Mr. Aonuma from the Nintendo Direct presentation: "The reason I wanted to show you these pictures today is because our new Zelda title looks like it is going to take some time to complete..."

So far this either means pictures from the new HD Zelda or something else.

Continuing the quote: "...so I wanted to report that while you're waiting for that game to release we intend to offer you The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, reborn on Wii U, to play in the meantime."

Put emphasis on the word so in the above quote and the whole thing reads like this: "The reason I wanted to show you these pictures today is because our new Zelda title looks like it is going to take some time to complete so I wanted to report that while you're waiting for that game to release we intend to offer you The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, reborn on Wii U, to play in the meantime."

Interesting, so the first listen through, one might think Mr. Aonuma is saying the artstyle presented is going to be for both announced Zelda games, but upon a second listen, at least to me, it sounds like only one will have this artstyle (at least for now).

Whether this is a misunderstanding because of the language barriers I do not know, but it is interesting nonethaless.

This means that the E3 2011 Zelda tech demo or the Zelda HD Experience is still a possibility. Who knows what further experiments might lead to.

If I missed anything, or if you think you might have found an error in my analyzing of Mr. Aonuma's presentation, please do share. I am just speculating as an excited fan.

Also, feel free to add to this speculation thread over time with your input. Everyone's input is greatly appreciated. :)

Take care everyone!

Sincerely, NintendoFan

I personally want the HD Tech Demo art style. It would be perfect for the first HD Zelda game. Not to say Wind Waker's cel shading is bad looking. It's my favorite Zelda game! :)

Yeah me too. I, however, will be severely disappointed if they go with the Wind Waker style. Taking a system witht he power the U has, plus HD, and of all the styles to pick from, let's go back to one from 10 years ago?

I mean the style in that demo is......just wow!!! I really hops somehow, someway, they stick to that style, or at least something close to it. It really is gorgeous.

Exactly. They need a game to display the systems power and have a wonderful storyline. Zelda fits this perfectly.

I remember reading somewhere that the Wii U Zelda game won't be as linear as past games, so that's something to look forward to. But, I really want HD Wind Waker more than the new Zelda title at this point.

The WW remake is awesome. The new one on the other hand took what we like about LOZ and flushed it down the toilet. That's right, Its stupid level based gameplay! Not saying that level based games suck but isnt the exploration why Zelda become popular in the first place?

Since i never finished wind waker 'm actually more excited for the HD remake, possibly because i know what I'm getting into. Wind waker is the best looking zelda to me, but i wont complain either way.

i doubt they will use the same artstyle for both the remake and the new one.

but the video shows them bringing out the small guns, then says will reveal more at E3.

but some of those game look good.

i think skyward started it but ended up going 1 storyline.

i can imagion nonliniear being good. but i dont think it will be great, unless it can drasticly change the storyline and sometimes completly change what dungens you go to. like 1 path has say ice dungen, other rought has forest dungen. 3rd with desert dungen. and so on. just switching up the order in the story wont mean much, and wont allow them to make actualy hard dungens and bosses since they would need to be beateable in any order.

Yeah we all want E3 demo style, including me. However I think they will come up with a new style, judging by what Aonouma said.

Just because it'll be "rethinking the conventions of Zelda" doesn't mean it'll become level based. The suggestions Mr. Aonuma gave - completing dungeons in a specific order, playing alone (keep in mind these are the 'conventions' being changed!) - actually suggest an even more open gameplay style.

When I first watched it and saw "Rethinking conventions"

I thought it said rethinking conversations... and i got a little excited that Link would grow some vocal cords and serenade us with some good ol' fashion Hyrulian Hymns

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the contributions so far, I read them all and appreciate every post! :)

I agree. The new HD Zelda is a ways off and I am all for the longer development time. Let them experiment, take their time and not rush. In my opinion, there are developers out there (I won't name names in respect) that rush out their games too quickly. I am talking about some AAA titles too that have received good scores. Yes, I understand there are development schedules, etc. to maintain, but I am always for longer develop times if special care is being taken to the games. That doesn't mean years upon years, but I think you get my point. :)

Just because it'll be "rethinking the conventions of Zelda" doesn't mean it'll become level based. Interesting. Nicely put. :)

Feel free to comment to continue the discussion.

Take care everyone! :)

I want a really big open-world hyrule in an art style similar to the tech demo. I don't know if we'll definitely get this but I definitely think it will be more open world and less linear than Skyward Sword.

Wind Waker HD is going to be amazing. Can't wait!

As for Zelda U, this is what I want to see:

- New art style that hasn't been used in the Zelda series yet.

- Large, open world

- No more hand-holding

- Please....PLEASE stop constantly displaying a text box describing what item I just picked up off the ground.....despite the fact that I have 100 of them in my inventory already. I don't need to be reminded every single time as to what it is. Red Rupee=20......GOTCHA!

- Dungeons/temples can be visited in any order(I think Aonuma briefly hinted that this is something they would like to work on)

- The item/weapon you find in a particular dungeon may not necessarily be needed to successfully complete that dungeon. It may not be what is needed to defeat that dungeon's boss either. Keep us on our toes and keep things unpredictable.

That's just a few things off the top of my head.

I was thinking the same thing about the item found in each dungeon not being the right weapon to defeat that dungeons boss. On another note, Im so pumped for Wind Waker!!! That's the only console Zelda that I have not completed so once it comes out I can finally check that off my list.

A few of my thoughts for the next Zelda.

It'd be cool if they made it so that dungeons weren't actually apparent, rather the world itself became like a really massive dungeon. You'd cruise through an area, not realising that either now or perhaps later, you just walked over the battleground of a future boss site, with no real hint that it would be. At the same time, areas would definitely be distinct enough for the player to understand where to go.

Basically put, when you enter a dungeon's doors, you don't get a black screen fade out and then it fades in with the dungeon name in massive letters in the centre of the screen. I mostly want this more so to be a clear testament of the Wii U's power, and how much power the name of the hardware's creators are able to push their own games.

I also want to see how they address Link himself, if we do play as the Hero of Time. Well, all the wishing fan story in my brain aside, I want them to make Link feel more natural in the game. For story plot, he can show more distinct emotion to events scripting before him. Gameplay wise, they could make it so he moves more naturally; a short walk before a full run, a moment of slowing down before a complete halt, stuff like that (not to the point where it's detrimental, but noticable). I also wouldn't mind run through type gameplay, where he can sword kill on the fly, because if my first idea is to be believed, there's gonna be a lot of environment, and as a player, I won't stop for ennething.

I also wouldn't mind it if the enemy isn't known to begin with. Make for a real plot twist when you realise someone that you've been close to in the game is Ganondorf (or whatever villain they have in mind). That's more or less just my thirst for a decent plot twist in the series (which I haven't really experienced). Heck, even if Zelda was like "No Link, piss off! I'm saving the world!" I'd love for that to happen.

Lastly, and this is probably my biggest gripe of the series as a whole. The items. I like that they have a lot of varied items. I hate how some of them get like 3 uses in the whole game (the Spinner in TP comes to mind). If you're gonna make an item, make it so there's a lot of nice places you can use it.

Trophy Cards are classy too! LOLZIGZAGOON
