Topics I've Started

Any Graphic Arist here that could do me a huge solid?

26 June 2013 - 02:28 PM

So I have no skill for the visual arts at all, digital or otherwise, and I want this so bad it hurts which is why I'm sending an open beacon for help!

I am a huge fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, frequently known now as Game of Thrones thanks to the hit HBO television adaption of the book series by George R.R. Martin. For those who don't know (skip this paragraph if you do by all means) Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy with lots of political and interpersonal intrigue, a major draw of which is that several high born families in its neo-medevial setting act as factions that have their own motivations, goals, and cast of characters.

One of the little flavor things about this is that each family has a sigil - a banner depicting a symbol of the family in the same veign as a family coat of arms. It is usually just one symbol, often an animal though not always, of a certain color on a "field" (what the background is called on a coat of arms) of anotehr color. Each family also has its own "words". A kind of slogan for the family.

When the series launched HBO had a series of promotional desktop backgrounds for each house. What I've wanted to do is make my own version of one of these using my OWN real family as the basis, as thoug my family were one of the fictional families of the series. I want it to look as close to the official desktops as possible. Here are some examples of them:

House Stark - "Winter is Coming"

http://images4.fanpo...3-1600-1200.jpg

House Lannister - "Hear me Roar"

http://images5.fanpo...6-1600-1200.jpg

House Baratheon - "Ours is the Fury"

http://images4.fanpo...4-1600-1200.jpg

House Greyjoy - "We Do Not Sow"

http://images6.fanpo...8-1600-1200.jpg

So I want one of these for my own family name essentially. I'd be using it as a desktop background and as a cover photo for my personal facebook page mostly, but may use a scaled down version as an avatar or signiture for forums as well. I would gladly put the creators name (or nickname) and website if you have one everywhere that I use it. If anything else would be needed from me, let me know here or in private message.

My family name is Cox. Our actual coat of arms has a rooster. So What I wanted to do was have the profile of Red rooster on a green field with the words for House Cox being "With Us Comes the Dawn"

Let me know if there are any takers. I've been dying to have this done for a while and I know there are a lot of creative people on these forums! It would be appreciated so so much, you'd be doing one fanboy a dream come true! And let me know if there is anything else you need.

Why not have a 3d gamepad?

23 June 2013 - 05:52 PM

Just as the subject line says. The thought just occured to me, why not make the wii u gamepad a 3d screen with the same tech as the 3DS? Did the idea, to anyone's knowledge, come up and got shot down for some specific reason? Would you have liked this? And do you think a 3d version might be a future add on?

How many games do you play at one time?

20 June 2013 - 10:27 AM

I always struggle with this. I don't want to spread myself to thin, but at the same time I get bored with one style of game play for to long. I'm curious how many games otehr wii u players are playing at any one time. I already know someone is going to try to be smart and say you can't play mroe than one at a time =P

But you know what I mean. Do you take one game and play it to completetion before moving on to the next, or do you have a couple of games you bounce between at any given point in time? Or do you have ADD and constantly flip between them.

I was initially thinking of doing a first party and a third party at any given time. But now I'm feeling like a third game would be acceptable to add if the genre was something more arcadey like a fighter. What do you guys think and how do you manage your play time?

Is there any truth to this?

Its hard man. Its so so hard. I loved the wii and I love the wii u about ten times as much. I mean that. I thought the wii was the best console of the last generation and I have so much fun with this gamepad I have essentially put all other consoles aside. But I already have to deal with the belly aching, as we all do, over 3rd parties.

The facepalming never ends. What irked me about it so bad is that the argument that wii had no 3rd party support was complete BS. There is no nicer way of saying it. There was an endless supply of GOOD 3rd party games and the best part was, they were unique. They weren't the same thing over and over and over, which is all 360 and PS3 got. Its just a matter of taste and that is fine but personally I wanted to play Trauma Center more than I did Assasin's Creed. That is just the kind of gamer I am. But in the wii generation if there was a 3rd party gap (and there wasn't, just a third party difference, something that would have been seen as a positive back in the 16bit era) it could easily be blamed on tech. The wii U not so much. There isn't as large a gap now.

So I'll take the bait. Fine. Lets say there is a "3rd party problem" on the wii u. I don't see it. But whatever.

I had a random thought and I was just wondering if there was any validity to it. Do these big guys like EA and Activision, in REALITY despite what they say about tech (which most of us have confirmed is mostly more BS) actually not want to release there crummy run of the mill clone games for the Wii U because they can't compete with Nintendo's own 1st party line up?

Nintnedo is pretty much perpetually in a state of having a major 1st party release. And they are so massively saturated for owners of the console. Its not to unusual to walk into a PS3 owners room and and not see Sly Cooper, or while less common finding Master Chief missing in an Xbox guys domain isn't unheard of. The vast majority of people with a nintendo console though are going to own a mario, zelda, metroid, smash bros title and often its all of the above. Because of the cost of games and frequency of release is it possible that people like EA and Activision don't want to drop with Nintnedo because they know that if you only have 60 bucks in your pocket its going to Mario not Fifa?

Opinions wanted: Sequel maddness

16 June 2013 - 06:11 PM

So I got my Wii U just this week and I got it with Arkham City, a game I've already beaten but it was possibly my favorite of the generation so I knew it would make my first wii u gaming expericne fun. People complain about the lack of games but frankly I have plenty to keep me busy without having to backtrack into the wii's catalog or head over to the virtual console. After I 100% everything in Arkham City which will take a good while, I have already determined that Zombie U, and Injustice: Gods Among Us are deffinite buys. New Super Mario Bros. U is a possible buy, and of things not out yet Rayman Legends is likely and Arkham Origins is a given.

I didn't care for the last generation much. As a result there are a lot of games I did not play and I spent a lot of my time with retro consoles. As such there are several wii u games I am interested in but am hesitant to play because I'm obsessive cumpulsive usually about playing a series in order. (I'm the same way with TV and movies etc.) But this is something I'm trying to get over... So here is the thing. I would like people's opinions on the series I list bellow and tell me if its something I can just go ahead and play the wii u instalment of, if I need to at least watch the game unfold on youtube to get the story, or if its something that I unavoidably really need to play somehow if I want to play the wii u instalment:

- Bayonetta

- Monster Hunter

- Assasins Creed (played 1 and 2 did not beat eitheir)

- Darksiders

- Ninja Gaiden

- X (do I need to play Xenoblade or anything else in anticipation of this killer app?)

I think thats all but I'll update if i think of more. Thanks for your help!
