the Summer's most seen film?

Both films come from respectable franchises, and each film in the series has seen high success. I honestly think this could go either way, imo. Both will probably be good.

The Transformers series is garbage, but it will probably get more publicity than X-Man

I doubt it. The last one didn't.

#274309 WSJ - Netflix Agrees to Pay Comcast to End Traffic Jam

Posted by Zinix on 23 February 2014 - 01:00 PM in The Café

Netflix Inc. NFLX -0.63% has agreed to pay Comcast Corp. CMCSA -1.37% to ensure Netflix movies and TV shows stream smoothly to Comcast customers, a landmark agreement that could set a precedent for Netflix's dealings with other broadband providers, people familiar with the situation said.

In exchange for payment, Netflix will get direct access to Comcast's broadband network, the people said. The multiyear deal comes just 10 days after Comcast agreed to buy Time Warner Cable Inc., TWC -0.79% which if approved would establish Comcast as by far the dominant provider of broadband in the U.S., serving 30 million households.

For months Netflix and Comcast have been in a standoff over Netflix's request that Comcast connect to Netflix's video distribution network free of charge. But Comcast wanted to be paid for connecting to Netflix's specialized servers due to the heavy load of traffic Netflix would send into the cable operator's network. Under the deal, Netflix won't be able to place its servers inside Comcast's data centers, which Netflix had wanted. Instead, Comcast will connect to Netflix's servers at data centers operated by other companies.

Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings decided to strike the deal after Netflix saw a deterioration in streaming speeds for Comcast subscribers. According to Netflix data published in January, the average speeds of Netflix's prime-time streams to Comcast subscribers had dropped 27% since October. Mr. Hastings didn't want streaming speeds to deteriorate further and become a bigger issue for customers, the people said.

During this period, Netflix was using Internet middlemen Cogent Communications CCOI -0.10% as a "primary" route into Comcast, a person familiar with the matter has said. That connection was starting to become overwhelmed with Netflix traffic, congesting traffic and leading to slower Netflix streams for Comcast Internet users, people familiar with the matter said.

At the same time, Comcast presented Netflix with more attractive deal terms than the operator had been offering, the people said. The deal spans several years. Netflix was aiming for a long-term deal to make sure its projected traffic growth wouldn't put it at a disadvantage, one of the people said. The connection is a so-called "paid peering" deal, which connects Netflix's network to Comcast's directly. Netflix was previously using several middlemen to access Comcast's network.

Mr. Hastings and Comcast CEO Brian Roberts have met on-and-off in recent months to discuss a possible deal and the two came to a framework for an agreement at a meeting at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Final details were worked out over the past two days, one of the people said.

The deal could force Netflix's hand in its standoff with other major U.S. broadband providers, including AT&T Inc., T -1.15% Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -1.77% and Time Warner Cable Inc.—all of whom have also refused to connect with Netflix's servers without compensation. Netflix's streams with Verizon in particular have gotten worse in recent months.

Netflix has little room to pay more to transmit its TV shows and movies. In a February regulatory filing, Netflix said that if providers don't interconnect with its servers, its ability to deliver streaming video, its business and operating results could be "adversely affected" due to increased costs.

The deal is the latest sign that broadband providers are gaining leverage in their dealings with content companies. Over the past several years, technology companies like Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.61% , Facebook Inc. FB -1.49% and Google Inc. GOOG -0.03% have also started paying major broadband providers for direct connections to their networks that would provide faster and smoother access.

This is extortion.

It would have bearly done damage to her, probably the worst what would have happened is a headache! This is something which should get a $100 fine. Not prison time! That's overkill if you ask me.

She attacked her with a shoe, she loses $100, fair deal! Not jail.

#291505 Woman walks free after murdering her husband

Posted by Zinix on 25 June 2014 - 07:12 AM in The Café

The family of a homicide victim is outraged after a judge let a woman, who a jury convicted, go free.

The family called the judge’s decision a slap in the face.

The family of Derrick Ricky Ballin doesn’t understand how it could happen. Ballin’s family told Channel 2's Tom Jones they've been waiting four and a half years for justice.

They thought they had it when they heard the jury’s guilty verdict last week.

Family members believed that when a jury finds someone guilty, that person is handcuffed and hauled off to jail. That didn’t happen and now the family wants answers.

Even though 12 people sitting on the jury in the Pamela Ballin murder trial found her guilty of beating her husband to death, Ballin still got to go home after the verdict.

#281425 Woman suing Subway after seeing "Big Mama" written on top of her pizz...

Posted by Zinix on 15 April 2014 - 08:39 AM in The Café

California woman says a Subway restaurant worker was a flat-out bully when he wrote a tasteless fat jab on her flatbread pizza order, reducing her to tears.

She now plans to file a lawsuit demanding that sensitivity training be a part of the chain's franchise agreements, she and her lawyer told the Daily News Friday.

Allison Brown said she was mortified when she pulled her order out of her bag on March 27 and saw the words "Big Mama" scrawled on her box in black marker.

"I just broke down crying. I couldn't eat it. I kept thinking, 'Big Mama' doesn't need to eat. It started really messing with me. I started thinking, 'Maybe I need surgery. Do I really look that bad? What's wrong with me?'"

Brown, a 45-year-old nursing assistant from Murrieta, Calif., said she immediately contacted the shop's owner and was told the employee admitted writing the cruel remark, but countered that he only wrote it on one of her boxes, not all the items in her family's order.

"The owner said the employee didn't know better, that he just didn't get it," Brown told The News. "He begged me not to go to the media, so I tried to work with him, but then nobody was calling me back. It's not right. This really hurt me."

Brown said she called Subway's corporate office the next day and cried through a message that was never returned. She felt the issue was getting swept under the mat, she said.

Eventually she had a lawyer send a letter demanding sensitivity training, not money. She turned down an offer of $5,000 for a confidentiality agreement and now plans to file a lawsuit under California's unfair business practices law, her lawyer Daniel Gilleon told The News.

"This isn't about money," she said Friday. "This breaks my heart. Here Subway promotes itself as a place for people who need help eating better, then this happens. What if the wrong person got a box like mine? What if they saw that and tried to commit suicide?"

Gilleon said a letter sent by Subway's corporate office this week refused to take any responsibility for the issue. He now plans to file the lawsuit in the next few weeks, he said.

#292407 Woman dies after being drowned by 3 morons during supernatural exorcism.

Posted by Zinix on 05 July 2014 - 08:16 AM in The Café

Police in Kumamoto city said they have arrested three people for forcing a woman to drink excessive amounts of water in order to exorcise demons from her. The 51-year-old woman subsequently died.

Police arrested Eiko Noda, 81, a self-styled exorcist, her sister Keiko Kitayama, 77, and the victim’s husband, Kosai Fukuda, 52, who is an associate professor at Sojo University.

Police said that Noda led a ceremony to perform an exorcism on Fukuda’s wife, Rie. During the ceremony, Rie was forcibly held down while large amounts of water were poured down her throat. The victim was denied a break and choked to death.

According to police, Noda has been performing exorcisms for the last 30 years, and reportedly visited the Fukuda residence several years ago to ward out evil spirits that had been lingering in the home.

#286513 Windows 9 rumored to be in alpha stage. Possible release in 2015.

Posted by Zinix on 25 May 2014 - 08:18 AM in The Café

what new things are we going to see in Windows 9?

The leaked document shows that the cloud-based Windows 365 is currently in alpha stage. Reports suggest that it will be a subscription version, where users will get the core OS for free but they will have to pay for additional features. The native Windows 9 is also in the alpha stage. It will bring a number of updates including one user experience, cloud services, changes to the Metro UI, OneDrive, system protection with Windows Defender, and enhanced Windows activation.

Another interesting thing is that the personal assistant Cortana is also coming to Windows 9. These changes and new features suggest that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is addressing most of the complaints resulting from Windows 8. Besides these features, the new version is likely to re-introduce the much-loved Start Menu. Anyway, the Office 2015 is no longer in the alpha stage. The document shows its status as TP-CP1, which means Technical Preview and Consumer Preview 1. It indicates that we may soon see a public preview of the Office 2015.

#286011 Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are being investigated by CPS

Posted by Zinix on 21 May 2014 - 04:57 PM in The Café

http://www.ibtimes.c...s-arias-1449382

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are being investigated by children services in Los Angeles over the picture of their 13-year-old daughter Willow lying on a bed with actor Moisés Arias.

The black and white photo caused a media furore when it was posted on Instagram. It showed the 20-year-old Hannah Montana actor shirtless with Willow fully clothed beside him.

Earlier this month Jada defended the picture and said there was "nothing sexual about it".

She told TMZ. "You guys are projecting your trash on to it and you are acting like covert paedophiles and that's not cool."

Now the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services has launched an investigation, according to RadarOnline.

A source told Radar: "The investigation was formally opened last week and is being taken very seriously by the department.

"Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been extremely cooperative with officials. Of course, they aren't happy that their parenting skills are under scrutiny, but they understand."

Arias, who was shirtless and had his lower part of his body covered underneath the sheets, deleted the picture shortly after posting it.

The Smiths reportedly considered the image as "an expression of art" and "innocent fun".

"We don't do punishment," Will Smith told Metro last year.

Willow's brother Jaden,15, made a show of solidarity to his sister following the incident and was spotted hanging out with Moisés. They were seen eating with friends at Sugarfish Sushi in Calabasas.

Good since Will is horsing nuts.

#274340 Wii U's Memory Bandwidth, GPU More Powerful Than We Thought?

Posted by Zinix on 23 February 2014 - 05:04 PM in Wii U Hardware

Some new information has surfaced due to some in-depth research conducted by various engineers regarding the Wii U's handling of memory: it may be more powerful and faster than we thought.

Unlike the PS4 and the Xbox One, the Wii U is the only new generation console that has a lot of secrecy surrounding its hardware capabilities. While early kits and impressions from developers indicated that the Wii U was weak and slow and a “crap” system, further digging from die-hard members of the gaming community have summed up a possible cap for Nintendo's eighth gen system capabilities.

Some individuals have pointed to the fact that Renesas Electronics, who merged with NEC – the semiconductor company who was recently picked up by Sony, as reported by DualShockers – is responsible for the Wii U's semiconductor in the same way that they were responsible for the Xbox 360's semiconductor. The natural logic that follows is that newer tech made in 2012 would obviously be faster than whatever they produced in 2004 for the Xbox 360's release in 2005.

Keep in mind that the Xbox 360's bit bus per macro was 1024 nearly a decade ago, and according to information provided by Bob Peterson – regarding NEC Electronic's eDRAM for the 360 – the system was capable of expanding its bandwidth thanks to the external buffering from the eDRAM, writing...
“Using external memory, the GPU would be limited to a 32- or 64-bit interface. The NEC Electronics eDRAM expands the on-chip memory interface past 1000 bits in width to support the GPU’s 256-Gbytes/second bandwidth between the graphics pipelines and memory.”

It's been speculated that this would translate into the 360 capable of through-putting up to 256GB per second. You can see how it all comes together in the diagram below.

_1393188032.jpg

The general gist is that if Nintendo's GameCube had eDRAM at 32 macros on a 16bit bus width, as noted by EE Times, and NEC already designed Xbox 360's eDRAM die more than a half-decade before prepping for the Wii U's tech, then quite naturally – according to Moore's Law – the Wii U's eDRAM should faster as part of the natural state of technological evolution. I mean, no one makes newer chips slower or bigger than previous chips, right?

It's been speculated that taking the information above into consideration, the Wii U's total bandwidth of gigabytes per second, including the possible 1024 bits per macro and GPU – which, according to TechPowerUp clocks in at 550mhz – would come out to around 563.2GB per second. Keep in mind that the Xbox One runs about 170GB per second of bandwidth between the DDR3 and eSRAM, as outlined by Xbit Labs

This could explain the Wii U's ease of hitting 1080p at 60fps with nary many complaints from those who actually enjoy working with Nintendo's hardware.

This also points to possible scaling with the GPGPU and graphical output that hasn't been discussed before with the Wii U.
