#94787 About the power of the Wii U

Posted by 00stevo on 21 July 2012 - 01:37 PM in Wii U Hardware

Hi all,ive been following this site for about a month, and tbh some of the people posting about the Wii u's specs have me quite amused.

First off, everyone keeps banging on about the CPU inside the console, saying its not as powerful/is/ or isnt a match for the 360.

Can i just say a CPU does not need to be stupidly fast, its mainly the system RAM and GPU that bottlenecks the CPU. (at least in console history)

Lets get this straight: XBOX 360 CPU is 3.2ghz,tri core, with 6 threads total. When it was first released,it was a 90nm design,it was stupidly hot even PC's were running higher ghz with better more efficient technology.

Nowadays M$ has got it to 45nm,it runs cooler, more efficient, but its still the same cpu,and do you hear ANYONE complaining about its performance?
Even M$ have stated its mainly the system RAM/V-RAM and GPU processing that are the main bottlenecks.

That was like 7 years ago. So thats is an ice age in PC terms, and you know what?.....CPU's have come a long way. Even if the Wii-U's cpu is 'only' 2.9ghz,it WILL still outperform the 360 and most certainly the PS3 because its simply got more efficient clock cycles plus advances in cache etc etc.

How do you think they can squeeze a tri/quad core into a little box like that and not be fast/efficient?

And a educated guess will tell me the GPU will be a 6670,which is quite a bit inferior to a 6770. But thats another story.. Cheers.

And also, the 360 and PS3 have a total of 512mb ram, split between system and gpu respectively.

If the Wii-U does actually have 1.5gb ram shared, that is a HUGE increase and rest assured will demolish 360 and PS3.

And if its 2GB? Even better.

Lastly id like to state im no fanboy,i did own a wii and sold it,i also had a ps3 on 2 occasions and sold them both. I am a 360 gamer currently, but im definetily getting a Wii-U because i see the huge potential it has.

#97915 Guess the Specs

Posted by 00stevo on 06 August 2012 - 11:24 AM in Wii U Hardware

To put that into perspective, the cube was roughly 8x more powerful than the ps2.

Honestly, where do some of you guys get your 'info' from?

The GC had as far as i can remember,48mb ram vs PS2's 32mb.

The GC had a slightly faster GPU.

Its CPU was dubbed 'Gekko' and ran @485mhz,vs 300mhz on PS2.

How that equates to 8x as poweful ill never know. Link to source or GTFO.

On topic:
Tri or quad cpu,2.5-3.0ghz,2 threads per core.

2GB ram.

AMD 6670. (not 6770)

The rest is already confirmed, the specs i stated above are the most important for graphics/processing performance.

#97916 Will You Get Wii U at Launch?

Posted by 00stevo on 06 August 2012 - 11:30 AM in Wii U Hardware

The original WII didnt really interest me,as im a 'hardcore' gamer, whatever that means.

But the Wii U has really got my interest peaked, the controller looks awesome and it certainly looks very capable on the graphics front.

I never played twilight princess,or hardly any Wii games for that matter cos i refused to play them in 480p which lets be honest looks pretty rubbish on a 1080 lcd screen.

Im really interested in the Nintendo store,redone/remade/upscaled classics are what will drive it imo.

REmake (resident evil remake,Gamecube) in HD please with achievements!

#97917 Wii U Ethernet Port?

Posted by 00stevo on 06 August 2012 - 11:41 AM in Wii U Hardware

Theres nothing wrong with using WIFI if your internet is half decent.

I was downloading a movie on my pc and playing gears 3 at the same time, and i never lagged once. If you are lagging, its either your,or someone elses upload speed is rubbish.

Saying that though they should at least put an ethernet port on there.

#97921 If Wii U fails to get 3rd party games who's to blame?

Posted by 00stevo on 06 August 2012 - 11:50 AM in Wii U Hardware

As long as it can keep up with the next xbox and playstation, and as long as it has a good online service i dont see an issue for the Wii U.

But i think Nintendo should roll out a good advertising campaign very soon to make people aware a next gen console is coming, because lets be honest, apart from fans and gamers in general nobody really knows about it.

They need to give it a presence.

#97976 If Wii U fails to get 3rd party games who's to blame?

Posted by 00stevo on 06 August 2012 - 02:59 PM in Wii U Hardware

its pretty much been confirmedmthat wii u has directx 11 identical hardware that runs the newest open gl software which means its pretty safe to say its future proof.

It doesnt matter wether its been finalised it can do DX11. It could do DX12 but still perform poorly. Tesselation is tough on a GPU,even when it has several dedicated tesselation units.
What im saying is,just because it can do DX11,it doesnt mean it can do it well.

DX10 and 11 are way overhyped anyway. They are basically just DX9 with a few features added on,that tax your gpu to hell, and nobody really bothers with unless they have at least a ATI 5850 (i own a 5850)

Look for black ops or whatever game you think looks amazing and look for it running on windows XP.....looks amazing at 1080p,60fps all max details doesnt it?
Its running on DX9,go figure.

#105310 Dont doubt the Wii U's performance potential

Posted by 00stevo on 08 September 2012 - 04:48 PM in Wii U Hardware

After doing lots of reading about wii u,including rumours and people seemingly having access to Nintendo,IBM,and AMD's plans,i have to ask this question.....

Why do you all seem to think you know whats inside the console?

Person A: Its a Power 7 super duper IBM powerhouse CPU.

Person B: No,its a tri core cpu worse or equal to the 360 cpu.

How do you guys know this/that?

Do you not sometimes take a step back, and realise your just following rumours, you should say this to yourselves: "you know what,im just going along with what im reading"

Its a joke tbh.

But i have no doubt of the potential of this new console. Apparently it has '1GB or RAM available to games' But people suddenly think the Wii u only has 1GB RAM. Think about it,the PS3 only has 256mb of VRAM,the Wii U has a whole GB,this is awesome make no mistake.

But still, even im speculating, because we dont know if it has 1GB Vram,or if it has 1gb ram split between System and GFX.

Either way,its at least double the amount of 360 or PS3 so rest assured the Wii U WILL be much better than the current gen.

Tbh i cant wait for Wii U it looks awesome,im currently talking it up amongst my friends family,i cant wait to show them Zombi U and Aliens:CM. Cheers.

#105330 Dont doubt the Wii U's performance potential

Posted by 00stevo on 08 September 2012 - 05:36 PM in Wii U Hardware

The one thing I have to disagree with though is the RAM, PS3 has 512 MB of RAM but 256 MB is devoted to the GPU while the other is for the CPU, Games, etc

What are you disagreeing with? Like you say the PS3 has 512mb.....256 is locked either side. 360 also has 512mb,which can be shared between system and GPU. Both consoles are producing fantastic visuals, with an average of 256mb for the GPU to work with.
Imagine 1024mb to work with, its literally quad-druple the current gen. I cant wait to see Darksiders 2 as it was intended.

Edit: @Heyheyharold.................i spotted my mistake about the PS3 RAM,......typo lol ;)

#106450 Wohoo! More rumours from an "anonymous source"!

Posted by 00stevo on 12 September 2012 - 04:51 AM in Wii U Hardware

What im really looking forward to,is that according to 'thehappening',the Wii-U can play 'catch'.

This is going to be the killer feature of the console, and sons and fathers the world over will rejoice.

Now all Nintendo needs to do is make the Wii-U grow legs so it can play football, but they might save that for next gen.

They can coin it 'catchball'.

#111108 Wii U GPU a customized AMD E6760?

Posted by 00stevo on 21 September 2012 - 03:13 PM in Wii U Hardware

Hmmm E6760? That will defo be very very nice for a console. But as i also own a PC with a 5850,i can see the benefits of moving up even just a little bit. Couldnt they have stretched for a 6770 at least?

Doesnt matter now anyway.

480 sp's......I think we are looking at Radeon HD5850 performance levels, for a console that is.

I play Dirt 3 @1080p,almost max settings,DX11 standard,with my 5850 and a DUAL CORE lol,and i get 50-60fps average. Thats average not minimum,so a console would have no problem maintaining 60fps constant.

And beleive me when i tell you,i played dirt 3 on my PC for a while at said settings, then i went over to my cousins who had it on 360.I was genuinley shocked at how poor and crippled it looked.....

'sub' 720p with 30fps does not look good at all trust me. With the specs the Wii-U has,i have no doubt it can match and even better my PC. 'Low clocked CPU' and all.

#111116 Wii U GPU a customized AMD E6760?

Posted by 00stevo on 21 September 2012 - 03:41 PM in Wii U Hardware

I think the Wii U will be showing what looks like 7770 performance, from an E6760 starting point.

As a dedicated console, it has far less overhead (as well as the code that gets dialed in for exact hardware) and will easily outmuscle a similarly equipped PC or even PCs with hardware multiple tiers above.

Agreed. I'll bet the 7770 is equal to a 5850,give or take so my prediction may be right.

Just did a google, and in the PC world, the 5850 smashes the 7770. Although it was a QUICK google, its what i thought all along.

Doesnt really matter though, because as 'Socalmuscle' pointed out,a lesser card in a console will contend with a high end card in a PC.

Wii-U is looking good.

#111129 Wii U GPU a customized AMD E6760?

Posted by 00stevo on 21 September 2012 - 03:59 PM in Wii U Hardware

Even if it does turn out to be a 6760,with 480 sp's,etc....that is a killer gfx card for a console.

I remember buying a HD4850 which was a 'cripple' of a HD4870 and i couldnt beleive how well it performed.

I played crysis with a combo of mid/high settings and i managed to maintain 40-60fps @1080p with that card.

I did have my cpu oc'ed to 3.5ghz.but that shouldnt be a concern considering the Wii-U's Gpu can assist the CPU as well.

So if we have 'Crysis' level performance then we are in store for some very nice visuals. Not that visuals are everything but still ;)

Posted by 00stevo on 21 September 2012 - 04:08 PM in Wii U Hardware

Yeah i was actually shocked at the gfx of 360 games, apart from gears of war which looked amazing.

If Wii-U is putting out 1080p60 versions of games out now,ive got very very high hopes for it. In fact i dont have to hope,i will wait impatiently for it to make 360 and ps3 look stupid. I think Bayonetta 2 will make DMC look very average. Lets wait and see.

#112479 Aliens Colonial Marines Thread

Posted by 00stevo on 24 September 2012 - 04:59 PM in Wii U Games and Software

What are some of you guys on about? ALIEN/ALIENS is one of the best movie franchises ever made,if you watch the first 2 movies you will understand why they are on LV426.

No it doesn't matter. Have you played the arcade games it's basically the same in HD with a story.

Thats a load of bollocks tbh, like i said if youd actually taken the time to watch the first 2,and even Prometheus, you would understand why the marines are there and what happened prior to them being there.

As you can tell i am a big fan of the ALIEN movies, and it annoys me when people say things like 'no just go ahead and play you dont need any back story' or something like that.

There is a reason for the excitement for this game and its basically the ALIEN fans like me who have been waiting years and years for a decent game based around it. Colonial marines looks like it could be the game im really looking forward to it.

#113578 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 29 September 2012 - 03:05 AM in General Gaming

Yes i have it. I finished leons campaign on veteran, his one is great btw.Leons feels like a mix of resi 2 and 4.Good stuff.

I then finished jakes, and i wasnt very impressed tbh. There were a few parts that were good, but tbh i couldnt wait till it was over.

Im gonna do chris's campaign today, and im not looking forward to it,hope im wrong.

Gfx range from good to excellent/impressive.

Camera is still too close, but as i said leon's part was ace so i guess i can forgive them slightly.

#113718 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 29 September 2012 - 04:32 PM in General Gaming

@ Keviin.

Well i finished chris's part, and just like jake's part there is too much running around gunning everything down. Both of those parts have good boss fights, and they make up for all the mindless blasting.Chris in particular faces off against a familiar foe from a previous game and i enjoyed that boss. Its tense and paced just right.

Im onto chapter 3 in ada's campaign now,and hers is definetily the 'quietest' part so far,but very enjoyable.

So far ive enjoyed leon's part the most, ada 2nd,chris 3rd and jake last.

Im not sure about ada's hidden agenda as i havent finished her part yet,but i will say there's a very interesting storyline involving her throughout all campaigns. Ill say no more, you'll just have to find out yourself!!!

Dont bother with youtubing it as you'll spoil it all for when you get round to playing it.

#113794 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 30 September 2012 - 02:42 AM in General Gaming

Well it took me something like 20-odd hours to finish the first 3 on veteran. So its not quite full campaigns but something inbetween. Some chapters last longer than others. What amazes me is how they've got the gfx looking so good. Easily on par with the best ever produced on the current consoles. I cant wait to see what the PC version looks like.

#113922 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 30 September 2012 - 12:44 PM in General Gaming

Yh the endings dont really give anything away.(wide open for a sequal)But collectively, the stories from all parts make sense(a bit) when you get to ada's campaign. And yeah like i said the boss battles make up for all the lame running around inbetween. Overall a good game, spectacular in some parts, dire in others, but ill happily give it an 8/10.

I think they should give the next game to ada,she is so cool and collected plus sexy, she is the perfect character to base a resi game around.

I almost lol'd when that machine was asking her questions while the sub was sinking and shes like 'im kinda busy right now,but yeah go on then' pure class.

Leon + Ada would be perfect for the next game imo.

#113952 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 30 September 2012 - 02:46 PM in General Gaming

Yes theres defo a romance, although its leon chasing ada if you get what i mean.Maybe resi 7 will get us there? :P
Also the game is as long as you want it to be. There are 3 main stories and you have a choice of 2 characters per story. The secondary characters will take slightly different routes if your in co-op play, but all in all its all the same.

The game is meant for co-op so grab a friend and get blasting.

#113962 Anyone here got RE6 early?

Posted by 00stevo on 30 September 2012 - 03:19 PM in General Gaming

Its literally 1-3 hours per chapter depending on difficulty. Some chapters are over quick, others last ages. For me leon's campaign was the best, with a good mix of action, tension, shocks, and classic RE4 gameplay.

Jake and chris's sections are a mixed bag, with chris's part besting jake's imo. Ada's is really good. I wanna see leon and ada as the main characters in the next game.

Posted by 00stevo on 10 October 2012 - 11:52 AM in Wii U Hardware

I think you guys are getting a bit carried away tbh. Ok,the physics engines on the games people have mentioned have been built using a completely different, and might i add old, inefficient cpu. So what if a few launch/post launch games have 'missing' physics?

All new consoles go through the same things.I clearly remember Fifa 07 (going back now lol) being rubbish compared to the xbox 1 version, purely because it was a quick, rushed port. Thats whats happening with the Wii U right now, devs are doing quick ports so they get more sales.

By next summer the Wii U will be making the 360 and PS3 look like crap. I cant wait to see what they do with the next Metroid and F-Zero games.

BTW i am no fanboy,i LOVE my 360,but the fact remains the Wii U has far more potential than a 7 year old cooker.

Oh and Ninja gaiden 3 looked worse than the first game on xbox 1 ffs,so how NJ3 could be stressing a cpu ill never know.Even with all the enhancements the wii version will be getting,it still wont come close to the masterpiece that is Ninja Gaiden Black,or even NG2.

#116487 To those who played RE6 (Leon campaign story spoilers)

Posted by 00stevo on 10 October 2012 - 12:09 PM in General Gaming

He's obviously just a nut job who thrives on the power to make decisions that have a huge effect. Also Capcom needed to give us the urge to pursue him because no one that is sane would launch missiles on anyone.

As for what family he is part of,i dont know but im guessing capcom will expand it in the next game,we need a new Wesker lol. I wouldnt be surprised if capcom thought of some way to ressurect him, because lets be honest he was sorely missed in Resi 6.

I just hope Resi 7 is one big campaign, with Leon and ADA as the main characters. Capcom could even let us briefly control other characters at certain points in the game, like Chris/Jill/Claire etc.Resi 6 was too unfocused, and it felt disjointed. But i did enjoy the overall story especially when everything pieces together after Ada's campaign. We can only hope.

#119970 Is the Wii U Really a Graphical Jump Over the PS3 & 360?

Posted by 00stevo on 21 October 2012 - 10:45 AM in Wii U Hardware

In the OP's first post,he says the Wii-U has x8 the amount of RAM as a ps3,which qoute, "has 256mb". That is wrong, both 360 and PS3 have 512mb,the difference between the two,is the 360 can divide its ram up any way it chooses. The PS3 has 256mb allocated to system and GPU respectively, theres no way to divide it up,hence why ps3 cant have cross game chat because it needed a few more megs from the system ram which it simply cant have.

Also,OP says Wii-U has 2GB GDDR3 ram, that it just a wild guess mate, noone knows what ram the Wii-u has.For all we know it could be DDR4,or something completely different.

#120063 Is the Wii U Really a Graphical Jump Over the PS3 & 360?

Posted by 00stevo on 21 October 2012 - 02:39 PM in Wii U Hardware

Halo 4 leaked, you can find it on torrent sites. I have modified Xbox, and I have played the game. Im not the only one that is saying that Halo 4 is the best looking game on consoles. I sad it 100 times, I mainly play games on PC in full HD, all details High, DX11, and Halo 4 can beat most if not all of PC games in same resolution. Game is beter looking than Crysis! They did fantastic job!

Second, PS3 have weaker GPU than Xbox. To compensate that, programmers need to employ several SPEs. SPEs are not good at processing graphics, they are not efficient, so results are catastrophic. PS3 can't render textures in resolution that Xbox 360 can, lightning is not as good and so on. They did really fantastic job with physics by the way.

I have played RDR on both consoles, Xbox 360 version look better, it has more characters on screen, view distance is better. You can see this in the video below:

Why I was telling this, because horsepower means nothing if you don't balance your system. Wii U is weary balanced system!

P.S. I don't support piracy, I will buy Halo 4. On the other hand, I can do with hardware I bought whatever I want!

I have to say,i agree with you.I also have a flashed xbox, and whilst ive got halo 4,i refuse to play it yet for fear of the ban hammer lol.But i have watched loads of videos and its clear theyve done an amazing job with the gfx,i cant wait to play it.

Also,i dont really like those comparison videos, although the red dead one you posted you can clearly see the 360 has a better res.
