There were hundreds of platformers back in the 80's through 90's, it was so popular they had movie or show license and created into a platformer, kinda like right now with so many FPS games are flooding out of control just because Call of Duty makes millions of dollars. And yes this is multiple choice, i mean I have more than 4 favorite platformers.

My favorite 2D platformer currently right now is Rayman Origins, I love Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 to death but after playing Rayman Origins I just couldn't put it down, maybe because I grew tired of the 'New Super Mario Bros' so much last year that I lost interest but I know I'll be back playing Mario when the new 3D one comes out. Its not the greatest platformers like all the other sell outs say but its great to see Rayman back in action instead of having stupid rabbits taking over last generation.

My favorite 3D platformer will always be Super Mario 64, the game itself is just so much fun till this day, so much content in a 64bit cartridge it is amazing Miyamoto created this. Especially how every level in the game is a different theme by the paintings. They should really bring that back.

2D? Donkey Kong Country. I've had soooo much fun playing that game!

3D? Between Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. I love them both so much!

Where's Psychonauts? Huehuehue.

2D would have to be... Kirby, Castlevania, Kid Icarus or Wario Land. I don't really like 2D platformers if that's all they do, platforming.

3D... There's too many, just... blargh.

I like Mega man.

Rayman has always been my favorite.  He gets my one and only vote.

The first game was an amazing and insanely difficult 2D platformer.  I had the DOS game as a kid and boy did I get accustomed to the difficulty.  Looking back on it, I'm surprised how far I got when I was 5 or 6, compared to today.  It took me a while to get to the mountain and dark levels, but as a child, I only had difficulty fighting the saxophone boss.

The second game was a great 3D platformer (with too many ports.  The N64 is probably one of the better ports).  I can't remember how many times I beaten it, at least 10 times on the N64 and 3 or 4 times on the DS port.

The third game was just plain fun.  I need to get a working copy someday (my PC version sucks)

The Rabbid games don't exist.

Origins is one of (if not the best) 2D platformers I have ever played.  Somehow it took everything that worked in the first game and combined it with fresh and new gameplay, making a brilliant game.

I am really looking forward to Legends.

------------------------------------------------------

Mario 64 and Chameleon Twist are my all time favorite 3D platformers. Chameleon Twist was my second foray into the platformer genre, being the first game I have ever actually beaten (I didn't 100% SM64 for quite some time).  But SM64 was just so magical and amazing.

------------------------------------------------------

Plenty of the Sonic game are great, the classic are great 2D platformers (my favorite being S3&K (yes I consider it one game and not 2)), Adventure is an amazing game, Adventure 2 is great, the Advance games were great (but had lackluster special stages and some had stupid 100% requirements), Heroes was fun, Shadow the Hedgehog was incredibly silly, Sonic and the Secret Rings had a lot of things going for it (it becomes more fun the more you level up (and the first stages are fun), the Riders games were nice to rent every so often (until Blockbuster died where I live), Unleashed was really fun IMO (the werehog levels were too easy with a gamecube controller), Colors was a great 2D game (don't kid yourself, it is 2D platformer and 5% 3D), and Generations was a great game.

I still have to try out Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

I don't rank games in any particular manner other than "I like it", but games that come to mind include:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Mario, particularly the Galaxy entries.
Rayman Origins
Wonder Boy
Gex
Tomba
Croc
Donkey Kong Country
Jumping Flash
Mega Man
Alex Kidd
PAC Man Adventures

Trying to think of some other ones. Teddy boy maybe.... That was a crazy on crack game.

Trophy Cards are classy too! LOLZIGZAGOON

2D: tie between Kirby and Metroid. The Kirby games always put ne in a good mood due to their lighthearted nature, awesome music, yet their challenge down the line (especially gor 100%). Metroid Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion all have amazing level design that makes me want to backtrack to find everything (therd was something you can't get, later you get the item in a different area, and then you remember that there was a place where you could use that.) and how it subconsciously teaches you how to play without large tutorials.

3D: Probably Mario Sunshine or Banjo Kazooie. I love the locations in Sunshine more than 64, and I loved the FLUDD mechanic. I'm not finished with Banjo Kazooie yet, but the dialogue and levels are entertaining.

I adore both Super Mario Galaxy games. Metroid Prime has also been pretty enjoyable, but I haven't beaten it yet nor am I sure if it would count as a platformer. Couldn't tell you my favorite 2D platformer. NSMBU is probably one of the best I've played in my 5-6 years of being a gamer, but it's not my favorite. I'll get back to this once I'm done with Super Metroid.

Super paper mario (now that they finally got rid of that bloody turn based fight engine, at least mostly) and Super Mario Galaxy. I do consider SPM to be 2D, as you can't stay in 3D for long

I like several platformer games but I can't rank any of them other than Super Mario which would go in 1st place :P

Note that my first platformer (and video game ever) that I played was Rayman on the PS1

Kirby 64 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island are my favorite 2D platformers.

As for 3D platformers, I have to go with Super Mario Sunshine.
