The last Nintendo Direct and tonight's Sony presentation have confirmed for me that the gaming experience I am looking for is on the 3DS. Strange as I haven't owned a handheld since I was in elementary school. Hoepfully Wii U will bring the games sooner rather than later...

The Wii shop one is a straight port of the old version, it has none of the extra characters or features and it's in 480p max.

How is the picture quality on 3DS XL compared to regular 3DS? Is it distorted at all from the size increase?

Picked up a DSi on Cowboom's console flash sale today, no stylus included. Are these necessary? Do most games require them?

Uh...yeah. DS games do require a stylus. They can be gotten for fairly cheap, though.
